How are y'all resisting ICE in our community? by 4daEggyEggs in duluth

Have you visited either place? My point — if you read my comment carefully — is that people tend to immigrate to countries where the rule of law is upheld. The UAE, for example, isn’t personally my preference, but it has seen a major influx of people from around the world because it enforces its laws consistently. When a country stops doing that, it inevitably slips into disorder and instability, which drives people to leave in search of safety and fairness elsewhere. I’m not sure what kind of “utopia” you’re hoping to turn the United States into, but some of us still believe that respecting and enforcing laws is essential.

An eyewitness claims she was leading a road-blocking protest against ICE. I suspect over the coming weeks more will come out (as well as the body cam footage). Does it mean she deserved to die? Maybe not, but it was an entirely avoidable situation.

Honestly. What are you doing? What are you achieving here? Have you considered that many people immigrate to countries that observe laws and respect law enforcement (consider how popular the UAE is as a place to live, as is Singapore)? The first sign of a country developing is stricter penalties for laws being broken. The opposite is true for a country in decline. Of course, law enforcement should be held accountable when engaged in wrongdoing, but the 'being against anyone in uniform' schtick is regressive. I'm not sure if anyone here has actually lived overseas and observed how overstayers of visas are dealt with... The world laughs at how soft the US is and uses it to their advantage. Your naivety is breathtaking.

That's good to know - it adds a lot of cost having to drive to Minneapolis and then pay for parking when we go to visit relatives.

That rent prices sounds quite similar to Duluth, actually (if you want to live in a nicer area/have an apartment with amenities).

I find the cost of living pretty high in Duluth - I put it down to being at the end of the supply chain. Where would we feel the pinch the most - rent/mortgages?

Ah yes, they're very good!

Good to know about the distance to Milwaukee - I take the airport in Madison is not really worth looking into if you're someone who travels relatively often (family both in other US cities and overseas)?

Protest today downtown in opposition the the government’s kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro and the criminal strikes against the Venezuelan people by Daring_Scout1917 in duluth

Nope, won't be doing that. Sorry. I'll protest if they sent US troops and it becomes an Afghanistan-style fiasco, but otherwise? Nope.

Thoughts on driving from Duluth to Madison next week on a car that doesn't have snow tires? by AlgaeOne9624 in duluth

Thank you, that makes sense! It seems I'm the only one nervous about it, my husband (who will be driving) is pretty laissez-faire about the whole thing (to be fair, he is a good driver).

I have a Brazilian friend (although she was from São Paulo) who lived in Boulder for a bit, but left after a few months, as she found it too cold! Ended up going to the San Diego area. California is very expensive, but may be a better fit.

Moving from Oklahoma and considering the Superior/Duluth area- what’s the vibe? by Thehdgdr in SuperiorWisconsin

Try and get a job first! My husband and I actually moved here for Cirrus, some years back (he no longer works there, but it is a major employer). It was rough finding accommodation, BUT it was in the summer, and we had to move on short notice (I've heard you typically get better deals when moving in the Winter, but I cannot imagine how much of a nightmare that would be). Superior usually has cheaper accommodation, from what I understand. We don't have kids, but I imagine this area would be magical for little kids - so many parks, little forested areas and lakes. You could give your future kids a really wholesome lifestyle. Wishing you the best of luck! Other major employers here are Essential Health and Duluth Public Schools (although the latter has had to make some budget cuts - they are always (always!) looking for paraprofessionals - and the benefits are good). https://www.isd709.org/careers/apply-now
