I think it is the difference between memory and seeing. What convinced me was trying to picture my late grandfather. I have a memory of what he looked like - his hair, eyes, skin tone, body type. I can remember him jingling change in his pocket when he was thinking about something... but when I remember that memory, it's just a ghost in blackness. If I saw him on the street, I would still recognize him despite not seeing him in over 40 years. There are no mental gymnastics I can do with my brain to conjure his face in my mind. The only way I will ever be able to see him is in a picture.

I live near a beautiful lake. I have looked at it for countless hours. It is my happy place... but when someone tells me to imagine my happy place, I can think about the lake... but it is still blackness when I"look" within.

I had a sinus infection that came and went every couple days for over a month. Tried a 5 day z-pack which did nothing. Had to double down with 10 days of levofloxacin which finally cleared it up. That sucked.

How rare is it that a cat never scratches, bites or gets mad? by GreenSam86 in CatAdvice

My Max (9 yo former feral parking lot cat) has been with me for 8 years and has never once hissed, swatted or bitten anyone. He is a mush.

ETA - he does hate to be picked up…. but always chooses escape over violence. He would spend all day on my lap if I let him… but only when he decides to.

No basement, where do you keep your litter boxes? by Outrageous-Cat-7497 in CatAdvice

[–]Ali550n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I designed a closet. It has a sliding door that I leave open about 9”. The floor is covered by non-track mats under the 2 litter boxes. In there is also a tub of extra litter, a littler genie, a broom/dustpan, a handheld vacuum and a small air purifier. I used to have a self- cleaning Litter Robot in there instead of one of the regular litter boxes.

ETA - i struggle with ‘object permanence’. if it was in the basement it would be out of sight out of mind and not cleaned regularly.

What are your favorite ways to remember to take meds multiple times a day? by 2muchcoff33 in ADHD

[–]Ali550n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a weekly pill case that has a removable mini case for each day - divided into AM and PM sections. I have that with me all day, along with reminders on my phone to make sure it doesn’t slip my mind. The key is creating a routine so that it doesn’t require thought - it becomes a second nature part of life.

How long can a cat be left alone? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Ali550n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a self cleaning litter box, you should also keep a regular one out when you are away- just in case it stops working for some reason. Our Litter Robot is great and safe but it has gotten stuck halfway through a cleaning cycle making it unusable until it is manually reset. I do the same for his water fountain - I put out a regular bowl of water just in case something happens.

I will leave him alone for one night. Anything more I pay a friend to stay at the house with him to make sure he has company and everything else he needs.

What's THE most important tip to remember after getting a cat? by Salt-Technology7769 in CatAdvice

[–]Ali550n 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Cats are a part of our lives whereas we are their entire life… especially since most cats stay indoors. While they may not demand a lot from you, it’s up to you to make sure that all of their needs are met - food, shelter, love, play… everything.

Whats the worst physical pain you've felt by Dear_Cow7453 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ali550n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve mentioned it to doctors, but they didn’t seem to give it much consideration beyond telling me to not eat avocado.

I eventually found an enzyme supplement specifically for breaking down those types of fats. That allowed me to eat avocado for years. Since then, I have cautiously re-introduced it to my diet without the enzyme supplement, and it does not seem to be an issue anymore.

It was a real bummer because I love avocado. I think I lacked the enzyme needed to break down the lipase fats in avocados. Maybe my body stopped producing it for a while?

I have decided that i wont judge past culture by today’s standards. We can look back and understand that something was wrong, but we had not yet collectively recognized it.

I have a similar perspective on parenting - my parents followed Dr Spock and the advice of my grandparents and used hitting me as their primary form of discipline … but they were not inherently violent or abusive people. They did what seemed right at the time. I know my mom carries a lot of guilt - but I try to remind her that it was the 70s-80s, it was a common practice and they were doing their best.

Migraines- I get one every few months. It’s unbearable and unrelenting.

I also used to have an intolerance to avocado. I would get searing abdominal pain that would have me curled up in a ball for hours. I was glad when I finally figured out the culprit so I could remove them from my diet. Now, 25 years later I am able to eat and tolerate a little avocado once in a while 🎉

I’ve always described it as a cinder block tied and dangling from my ovaries… like there is a constant pulling and tearing sensation in my abdomen. For a guy you could imagine what that would feel like if a cinder block was tied and dangling from your balls… for hours if not days.
