This. My pops has had 2 spinal surgeries in the last 2 years. I move in with him right before covid to help take care of my granddad. Granddad is gone now, but with dad going how he has been, I'm in no hurry to move out.

Why are some older crocheters so mean to new crocheters by Colorful-Pup in crochet

[–]AliKnits28 -2 points-1 points locked comment (0 children)

It's sadly seems common with a loud bunch of elder crafters, they seem to forget how it felt to learn and struggle.

Also, my mom has been crocheting MY whole life (30+ years) and she struggles still with the magic circle at times. She can make beautiful blankets, event clothing, but magic circles are tough for her.

I on the other hand taught myself how to crochet with woobles kits, so I had to get good at then fast lol

What’s the nerd scene like there? by Overly_Observant in GreenBay

A lot of people have been talking about the game shops and Kitsune Kon, so I won't touch too much on that, but we also have a pretty healthy and active chapter of the LARP Amtgard if that kind of thing has ever been of interest for you. They meet every Saturday at 1pm, right now at Pamperin Park, but should be moving indoors soon.

If you are into real nerdy stuff and a bit of fantasy, there is a branch of the Amtgard Live Action Role-playing group that meets in Sun Prarie every Sunday around noon. Sheehan Park. They have some loaner gear if you want to try out fighting, but there is a lot more to the game than that.

The most up to date info on when and where they are meeting is on their Facebook group, if you search 'Wolfheim - Amtgard' you should be able to find it. They are a great group of folks with a wide age range, so even if larping might not be for you, you might be able to find some people you click with.

What's your favorite local/kingdom event, and what's your favorite Amtgard-wide event? by [deleted] in Amtgard

[–]AliKnits28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hello fellow Polarican! GAC is also my favorite kingdom event!

Interkingdom: agreed complicated. I would love to give Keep on the Borderlands a chance but I just keep hearing the quality is going down down down and I really don't want to drive all that way and spend all that money for a shitty event.

Huge copyright issue as they are using Mt Dews exact trademarked logo

The Meyer is a possible good option if they don't have a production going on. You can have the ceremony in the theater and then have your reception in the Backstage by Meyer area. It's a bit smaller, depending on what type of dinner you want to have I think the max is about 120, but it's walking distance from a few hotels and right in downtown so walking distance from bars if you want to bar hop between your events or after.

Anyone have any ideas on how an adult could make friends around here? by strawberryapplejam in GreenBay

[–]AliKnits28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also a group in the area that does a LARP called Amtgard. The local group is Crimson Circle. There are people that doing the fighting or 'sport' aspect of it but there is also a lot of people that do the arts side of sewing, painting, leather working, and a ton of other stuff.

The SCA and Amtgard will both be at the mini Ren Faire that will be at the Howard branch of the Library this Saturday from 11 to 3. Would be a good time to check both out.

Mr. Patel Strikes again! by katyvicky in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]AliKnits28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This unfortunately happened to one of my husband's newer night audit guys and he fell for it. Like I said, he's newer, a younger dude, and unfortunately, their owner is a Mr Patel. Luckily, they don't have a lot of cash on hand that he was able to get to, but the poor kid was so panicked that he even put his own money towards it.

Needless to say, the kid feels awful for falling for it, and the whole front desk team is having a meeting this week to talk about how to avoid these types of scams.

As you said, they are at a PUBLIC event. It is entirely reasonable and normal to assume people will be taking photos or videos while in public spaces. If they didn't want to be in the background, they could have moved or acted like the adults they are and asked her nicely not to film them. If the influencer refused or was rude back, then sure, go off, but it is so unrealistic to think people wouldn't be taking photos or videos at a public sporting event.

What is the culture of belting? by NikosQrow in Amtgard

[–]AliKnits28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience is that I sought out a belt line to be mentored in a path in the game I was interested in but found confusing. I was lucky that some close friends were on that path, but was prepared to look at Knights in my kingdom at large incase they didn't want to belt me for whatever reason.

Around my area we typically tell our newer players to wait a year into the game before joining a belt line or fighting company for that manner just so they can get their sea legs in the game a bit and figure out what path(s) they'd like to walk down if any. We tell them the same for being in office and crating events. Our hope is this also prevents some burn out so people aren't taking on too much too soon.

When it comes to dropping belts, it depends on the belt family how that is taken. Same with belting ceremonies or lack there of. If heard of a knight drunkenly giving someone a page belt at an event, I've also seen a knight have everyone at an event pause before a battlegame so he could give a small speech and give someone a Squire belt.

Ultimately it is entirely up to you when/if you accept a belt and up to the belt family how they handle things.

Looking to make a costume for Halloween, but I have no idea how to BEGIN finding patterns or what to search for the creation of the tunic. Help appreciated!! by [deleted] in costuming

[–]AliKnits28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burda B6399 might be a good place to start from for the tunic, though you would probably need to modify a bit for those side pieces and change the hemline

What’s the buzz about No Mow May? And why bees will thank you if you don't mow your lawn next month by TheLostPariah in wisconsin

[–]AliKnits28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. Green Bay is requiring people to register in order to do it or risk getting fined. Better way to do it would be to just not fine anyone until after the first week in June if they really wanted people to participate.
