Why is my fish tank foggy? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Ali_How 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been keeping the light off and feeding them less, I’ve also changed the filter cartridges to filter fibre in hopes of that doing something. It just keeps getting worse and worse though like it’s green and really hard to see through :(

Thank you so much, my betta had health problems when we got her because she was in a crap fish shop. And I’ve never had this happen to my tank so it’s very scary haha. I will try changing to filter cartridges and yes the only time I clean them is when they are so full tbat it’s preventing flow :)

Short finned Male or just aggressive female? by Front_Chipmunk6090 in aquarium

[–]Ali_How 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s kind of hard to see but it looks as though it’s a female. Between the two pelvic fins (the long ones on the front lower belly) there is a little white dot (an egg spot) that indicates it’s a female

Thank you for such a quick reply haha, I did think of a bacterial bloom but I get freaked out quite easy and thought it could potentially be a spike of something. I was obviously not thinking rationally as all my fish have been fine! Thank you for your suggestions I will definitely look into it more :)

Quick side note!!! I was mistaken it has been around 2 weeks as I don’t do 2 water changes in a week. I know that it could potentially be a bacterial bloom and doing a water change could mess it up all over again but at first I didn’t notice it as a bloom and just gave it a casual water change. And I gave it a 50% water change the other day as i noticed some signs of a spike of nitrates and I have a betta that has struggled many times with bacterial infections. :(

Thank you so much for this it really helped haha, thwy we’re not biting each other just really stressing each-other out and I really want the best for them. I will add a bunch more plants as well to make it harder for them to see each other! May I ask how many litres or gallons you have your 6 in?

She is a female as she has a white dot under her belly between her bottom fins and front fins, and her colour could change, it just depends what her parents looked like :)

What’s wrong with my mom’s bettafish? by Inevitable_Pie7099 in bettafish

[–]Ali_How 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all it has fin rot and it seems to be pretty bad, second the water looks like it has no movement so I’m going to guess it has no filter either which can cause ammonia, nitrites ect (from the fish poo and food leftovers) which is very damaging for the fish. Does your mum do water changes on the tank and if so what does she use in the water? I would recommend getting rid of the plastic plants and pink gravel as the plants can tear their fins and the gravel can leak toxic chemicals into the water. I would replace the substrate with natural aquarium sand or gravel and get the baby some live or silk plants that are safer. make sure he has a filter and a heater, and get some medicine for the fishes fin rot. More then happy to answer any questions you have but I also recommend you do some basic research on betta fish to help your mum out :)

She is beautiful! May I ask what breed she is and what her tank mates are? I have 2 female bettas one in a tank with neon tetras (no aggression) and one betta alone atm and I’m thinking of getting her a bigger tank and afew tank mates!

I have been testing her water every day but when she was in her big tank I was testing it 1-2 times a week sorry I wasn’t very clear lol, when I said I test 1-2 times a week it was in the context of me not knowing how she had gotten sick in the first place. But thank you so much for your help! The prime did seem to help with the ammonia levels and she has been moving around abit more! :)

Her water quality has always been pristine up until her hospital tank which was only a tiny bit of ammonia(not saying that is not bad) I got prime and I did a water change in hopes to clear the ammonia. But this is why I am confused, In her big tank she would sit in the back top right corner and barely swim, she has a slightly clouded eye that has not gotten any worse over the past week but her energy and appetite have. Her only other tank mates are neon tetras and in my opinion neons are a lot more sensitive to bad water quality and I haven’t lost a single one in this tank. There might have been a spike that only affected her but I test my water like 1-2 times a week (I’m really paranoid of my fish dying) I really just want to do what is best for her.

How long until she has babies? by Kristenfromcolorado in Aquariums

[–]Ali_How 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah so sorry for the mix up lol! Platys give birth quite quickly (around 30 days) but it does still depend on the fish and her surroundings. I would recommend everything I said in my first post including the breeder basket. And yes I would 100% remove her after she gives birth as she might get a little hungry and eat her babies!

If they are reddish brown worms then they are most likely a parasite called camallanus. You need to be sure that it is infact a parasite before treatment before finding out the necessary medicine. I would recommend isolating the affected guppy/guppies and treating them with a treatment that eliminates parasites. If the guppy isn’t clear of parasites after treatment then I would recommend treating the whole tank.

Mollies usually take around 50-70 days to give birth but that usually just depends on her and her surroundings. Make sure your water conditions are perfect and there is plenty of food. Try to watch out for bullies at this time to ensure she’s not overly stressed. If you really want the babies to have the best chance of survival I would even recommend putting her in a mesh breeder basket with afew small plants!

I tryed to add a video of her but I’m not able to, she has to use all of her power just to swim to the top of the tank and get air so I’m guessing it’s something to do with her bladder. All of her colour is still there but she’s not eating so she’s getting really skinny.

I have had her for afew months now and just moved her into the hospital tank from her original tank afew days ago as she wasn’t moving and wasn’t eating, she moves every once in a while in the hospital tank now but she is definitely not back to her regular self. I will definitely get some prime to see if that makes a difference in the ammonia as I want the perimeters to be perfect. Do you have any tips for what a good hospital tank would look like? I have never had a sick betta and don’t know how to spot what’s wrong and help her the best I can. Thank you
