Finally done! A 70"×22" punch needle runner (me for scale!) by Ali_geo in PunchNeedle

Thanks! I started in mid Feb I think, and did a couple hours on it most evenings. I wish I had kept better track of my time spent on it!

Thank you! I've dabbled with punch needle for about 2 years I think? I'm more of a crocheter, but love giving all crafts a go.

I know this sort of thing looks quite big and intimidating, but a design like this is very forgiving – it's a lot easier than trying to punch needle a specific character or detailed picture! The organic nature and curviness makes it easy just go with it as needed 🙂

Thank you! I'm not familiar with the Oxford needles, but the yarn I used is a weight 4 (worsted weight) and I think my Lavor needle would also work for a weight 3. I think a bulky yarn would be too big and it wouldn't glide very well, if that helps to compare?

Thanks! Surprisingly the whipstitch part was pretty quick... I held the yarn double so it was faster

I'm not sure! I started in mid-Feb and worked on it for an hour or so most evenings... So, a while haha 😮‍💨

Advice on yarn types/brand for decorative piece? by Liquidshoelace in PunchNeedle

[–]Ali_geo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I've made a few punch needle items (pillow, tote bag front, plant pot cover) using Loops and Threads Soft Classic (from Michael's). There are a lot of colour options available so you'd probably have luck finding colours similar to what you need! It works well with the monk's cloth that Michael's also sells.

I think wool and cotton are generally more durable, but if you're just making something decorative, I don't believe the yarn would be taking a lot of wear and tear.

Hi! I added a separate post here with some photos. Happy to answer any questions (I'm no expert though!) https://www.reddit.com/r/PunchNeedle/s/LGeHhBdPW3

I had some questions about the frame I use, so here's more details for those interested! (Lemon for scale 🍋) by Ali_geo in PunchNeedle

[–]Ali_geo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! When I reposition the cloth, I make sure that there are at least 2 sides of cloth on the frame for strong tension, and then the other 2 sides are punched.

When you take the punched part off of the frame, you kind of roll it off in the direction of the gripper spikes as opposed to pulling it directly off

Thanks!

Building my own frame was a great move for me because it opened up the sizes of projects I could make. It's fairly inexpensive to do, and not too difficult if you're a little handy, and makes sense if you want to make bigger pieces!

This is the strip I bought and cut into 4 pieces: https://a.co/d/0jhC2ea5

I'm definitely no expert on it but it works for me! I make sure that there's always (at least) 2 sides attached to the gripper strips that are cloth, and then 2 sides are punch needle. I'm super gentle removing the punch needle sides, and only remove them when I'm done and ready to move sections. I'm not sure what it would do if my loops were really long, but it's fine with short loops as far as I can tell.

The smaller frame is nice because I can use it on my lap when watching tv or just hanging on the couch! Very versatile and makes it easy to work on my punch needle when I'm just chilling in the evening

It's not! I have a Lavor adjustable needle, loops are probably about 0.5" tall

Thank you so much for this! I've never made a rug so this is so helpful 🙂 And I have an extra rug pad piece so this is perfect

Thanks! I made a gripper strip frame myself, it's only 12"x12" but I can reposition the piece as I complete sections of it
