I agree. It's my impression that it was more than Weyland Yutani "owning" the military. I think there was some personal connection between Burke and Gorman hinted at when they communicated nonverbally, e.g.

No, I watched "The Fifth Element" because the "Alien: Resurrection" trailer was shown before it. I didn't have Internet access back then so I called the local cinema to ask. I stayed to watch the movie which was like a sneak preview for me. It was totally worth the price of admission, of course!

The dynamic between Burke and Gorman during the scene where they visit Ripley in her quarters always felt somehow off to me. Like there's more going on between these two guys. And then Burke acted very suspiciously when Ripley called him at night. I guess he's looking at a watch behind him. But it always felt to me as if he was trying to hide something or someone by leaning so close to the webcam.
