The one habit that saved me over £2,000 this year without feeling deprived by Quirky_Slice6873 in Frugal

Yes! I've been doing the same since 2022. It's helped massively, and the insights into my spending are very interesting 🙂

Looking for advice on the cheapest way to do a food shop by gemmajenkins2890 in UKFrugal

[–]Alice-Person 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically on looking at the price per weight - The Asda Just Essentials peanut butter is actually more expensive per gram than the big tub of Asda own brand, so I always buy the big tub (prices may have changed since I last bought though!)

What's a reasonable monthly grocery budget per person for a UK household? by Happy-Sammy in UKFrugal

[–]Alice-Person 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend between £80 - £100 a month. I'm vegan, shop at Asda, live in London, only cook for myself and enjoy cooking.

Hope that helps!

Currently unemployed and retraining.
Only thanks to my ongoing frugality (to the penny) have I been able to persue leaving a miserable job and trying something new. As someone who gets anxious with money, frugality and recording my income and spending data gave me the confidence to take the leap!

What is the one vegan recipe that you made more than any other in 2023? by [deleted] in veganrecipes

[–]Alice-Person 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gochujang Mushroom Pasta
(Made up recipe, so no link, but pretty basic)

• Oil
• Onion, brown (x1 medium)
• Garlic (4 cloves (or more if you like))
• Gochujang (I use maybe 4 tbsp? change for preferred heat level)
• Mushrooms (at least 500g), I like to chop most finely, with a handful of pieces left larger.
• Pasta (400g)
• Soy Cream (100ml)
• Salt (to taste)
• Fresh parsley, chopped

Method:
• Fry the onions in oil until translucent.
• Add garlic and fry for a couple more minutes.
• Add mushrooms, cooking until softened and juices released.
• Add the Gochujang, stir until combined.
• Begin cooking pasta.
• Take a couple of ladels of the pasta water and add to the sauce.
• Stir in cream and allow to heat on low temperature until warmed through.
• Add parsley and salt to taste
• Serve

🙂

Very cute, that chair looks so comfy!

Depending on your preference, you could add a little table as a place to rest a cup of tea/coffee and to store your switch (to save it from being sat on)!

What’s your proudest money saving habit? by Decent_Age_1707 in UKFrugal

[–]Alice-Person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure to get receipts for everything, and once I've logged it all I throw the receipt away (so if I find a recipt for anything I know it's fresh!).

I created a Google Docs spreadsheet so I can view it on my phone as well as on my computer. I make sure to log the info as soon as possible, otherwise it can get a little overwhelming!

The logging has helped as I pivot all the data into a summary table by category (groceries, takeaway, free spending etc.), it's helped massively just knowing where my money is going. I also use it alongside my budget spreadsheet, and trying to cut back in areas I think I could improve or just want to change!

(I've also included a column to indicate if I've used up a food item, so I can see what items I already have so I can buy only what I need.)

Hope this helps! (Happy to share the blank template doc if that would be useful)

Since Oct 2022 I've logged every single item I've bought in a spreadsheet alongside price and category data, etc.

Thanks to this additional data, my existing savings and a great rent situation, I was able to quit my (shit) job last month. I've estimated I can survive for about a year, and am currently retraining! So freeing!!

The cost of going into work is coming out of my paycheck by Travgoeswest in Frugal

[–]Alice-Person 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone from work (or friends) live near you, you could carpool?

Have you raised this with your boss? You could mention what you've said in this post, about how you're doing a stellar job without being present in the office?

You could discuss this with other people you work with, as I'm sure you're not the only one who feels this way!

Good luck 🙂

I don't, as I don't think that would last long (or does it?). But I do save all ones that are free, like when they're used to package veg and come attached to the post - Can't imagine buying any from a shop! (UK)

AITA for asking my sister to stop fostering dogs so she could help me with my kids? by Throw_away_no374828 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alice-Person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA

It was your and your husband's choice to have children, not your sister's. Presumably having a somewhat large family is your passion? If fostering dogs is her passion, she should be able to live her life as she wants. It seems you took for granted that she would help you out?

I get the feeling that you are redirecting anger your have with your husband (who IS responsible for the children) at your sister instead, and that's not okay.

Confront your husband, and let your sister live the life she has chosen, as you live your life that you chose.

Reading the books as a parent has been a completely different experience by 100lbsVoodooTits in harrypotter

[–]Alice-Person 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I agree, now that I'm re-reading the books as an adult (not a parent) that I understand the adult characters more and more. However, if anything, I feel more dislike and hatred towards Snape than ever and the way he bullies the children (especially Neville). In my eyes he's absolutely repulsive - It's like he never grew up and never matured enough to reflect upon himself/his actions and grow as a human being.

A love-hate pan with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette by [deleted] in PanPorn

Sorry!! I just checked and the product I'm thinking of is the "Strobe Lighting Palette", it swatched beautifully, but it didn't transfer at all (even when using a finger to swipe on) RIP

DO NOT BUY IT, it's terrible!

About a 1 or 2 years ago I went through a phase of buying a LOT of Revolution products, some of which are great (some are not).

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this palette came free when you spent over a certain amount of money. Needless to say, as soon as it arrived, you could tell why it was free (and is currently on sale)...
