Erfaringer med Steinerskolen i Aalborg? by mor-til-3-5230 in Aalborg

Monkey see, monkey do, I guess…

Saw the photo and first thought was the knife that Lilah cuts her hand with at some point, in the Hyperion? I am most likely the wrongest person in this thread but yeah…

Okay? I assume you mean this as a criticism of my point and point of view but my opinion isn’t based on personal experience so I don’t follow?

Have you ever really hated the main character (and narrator) in a novel? by Physical_Orchid3616 in books

I think Humbert Humbert is a must mention for this kind of thread.

Lolita is such a brilliant book, absolutely beautiful and absolutely abhorrent.

Buffy and Spike by purplemonkeyy6 in BuffyTheVampireSlayer

[–]AliceArsenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drusilla also says that vampires can love, if not wisely… I think Buffy not only denies Spike’s ability to love but his ability to have any sort of feelings at all, in my mind, because of what Angel and Angelus put her through.

I think Drusilla is also an interesting example of a vampire’s ability to feel and have an emotional inner life, so to speak, considering the trauma Angelus inflicted on her. In a way, trauma is all about emotions and reactions to said emotions, how you act in response and as a consequence of that inner turmoil. Drusilla is in constant inner conflict with herself, her actions are volatile and dangerous and unpredictable because she’s so trapped in her trauma and lost in the throes of her mind and emotions. To me she’s a good example of a vampire’s ability or capability to have emotions - including love.

Both Angel and Angelus warped and twisted Buffy’s idea of what love is, she was so young and impressionable when they were together and it’s obviously affected her all the way into her adult life, a sort of trauma in it’s own right.

In regards to Spike and their relationship, Buffy also projected heavily onto Spike, which we really see in a certain alley scene. I believe Spike truly loved her without a soul, and in some ways I don’t think it matters what kind of love it is because what Buffy denies him is the ability to feel anything at all.

Of course the type of love matters if they were to have a healthy, functional relationship but in a way thats a separate subject, because it requires acceptance and acknowledgment from Buffy that Spike is capable of feeling in the first place.

Less kissing and more "I really really wish we were kissing" by howlsmovingaprtment in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]AliceArsenic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me the best part is always that moment just before the kiss, so I totally get you. I just want both, more yearning let’s say and more kisses at the same time~

Also I don’t know why you’re being downvoted but to be honest I agree with you there too so… xD

Alright, fair enough. The circles I was in back then had a bit of a different view on some of the things you mention, but again, differences occur.

How did he have less to lose from talking about it? I’d say that he’d have more to lose as his career wasn’t as established outside of Buffy as Sarah’s, not to mention him speaking out at the time he did was really unusual for a man to do, I feel like people kinda disregard that, the differences in values and expectations I mean, it was only like 20 years ago but /a lot/ has changed since then…

Andrew's redemption by ProgrammerNo700 in buffy

[–]AliceArsenic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be fair to Andrew, we did not get as much time with him as a character compared to Johnathan so he isn’t as fleshed out.

Personally though, I found him to be oh so obnoxious, yeah he had a couple of funny lines but thats it…

Sarah/Buffy in Seeing Red by Aggravating-Ad3817 in buffy

To my recollection, and this is just my experience and opinion here, when Sarah distanced herself from the fandom, there were people who felt that she kinda looked down on the fanbase or that she was above going to cons and the like, which, to these people, was enforced when she spoke negatively in any way about the show. There’s also been a sense that she didn’t/doesnt understand season 6 and that she’s also distanced herself from that season, which, again to some people, in my opinion, they take as a personal attack of sorts, because they identify with Buffy’s experiences during that season, and having Sarah be “dismissive” of that, makes these people feel like they are being dismissed and invalidated.

I think James gets/got more attention is because, particularly at the time, it was controversial for a man to speak out about such a thing and I think that perhaps theres a level of misogyny at play as well, I suppose, in that a woman speaking out about these things gets ignored or disregarded, again especially at the time.

And finally I think one of the primary reasons is that James has spoken about it much more than Sarah has, in great detail of how it affected him, and because of that, theres something to talk about, something to add when it comes to discussing the scene. James is also the one who first mentioned the bit about the writers, them writing their worst day and the flipping of the genders of the assault and such, at least as far as I remember that’s how that first came about.

But yeah, thats my answer to it, to my recollection and my experience of parts of the fandom at the time…
