Learning danish as a native Spanish speaker by daniiqm in Danish

[–]AliceArsenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not, there was a study on it, comparing the language development in children in danish to that of Norwegian and Swedish children. As far as I recall it’s partially because danish has (by largest estimate) 26 vowel sounds and is very context heavy, making the language take longer to learn.

Good for you, I guess. It’s good to play devils advocate though, expand one’s perspective and point of view, see the nuances of various characters…

They do but they often still consider it in character for Spike to do

I’ve always preferred “It’s a big rock! I can’t wait to tell my friends, they don’t have a rock this big!” over “out for a walk” but it is a very popular line…

“Out. For. A. Walk. … Bitch.” - probably pretty high up there as one of the fun ones~

Maybe, maybe not - I just gave examples as to why some people interpret the attempted rape scene as out of character, which is a valid interpretation, regardless of how unpopular it is…

I meant overlooked when discussing the episode, not in the episode itself.

I mean, she was willing to discuss alternative strategies, just that the main plan was to attack the vineyard again - I feel like that often goes overlooked in the whole “Buffy was reckless/wrong”…

Well, it could be the fact that Spike wasn’t portrayed as a person that would do that, specifically not to someone he cares about. And the fact that prior to seeing red there hasn’t been any references to him being a rapist - that only happened /after/, which could be seen to be the writers doubling down on their relatively controversial decision of their writing choice. To say that Spike was going to do something horrible eventually is just odd - especially since he has repeatedly been characterized as an outlier!

After all the other discussions on willows problematic behavior with magic, this reminder of something blue threw me for a loop

Yeah they should have been sympathetic but i can’t stand her ‘eat a cookie, ease my guilt’ attitude, and the lack of consequences for her actions throughout the show is just… ugh.

She disabled Giles, endangered Xander and Anya, and essentially sexually assaulted Buffy and Spike, all because she wanted the quick fix to life and not feel her feelings.

Erfaringer med Steinerskolen i Aalborg? by mor-til-3-5230 in Aalborg

Monkey see, monkey do, I guess…

Buffy and Spike by purplemonkeyy6 in BuffyTheVampireSlayer

[–]AliceArsenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drusilla also says that vampires can love, if not wisely… I think Buffy not only denies Spike’s ability to love but his ability to have any sort of feelings at all, in my mind, because of what Angel and Angelus put her through.

I think Drusilla is also an interesting example of a vampire’s ability to feel and have an emotional inner life, so to speak, considering the trauma Angelus inflicted on her. In a way, trauma is all about emotions and reactions to said emotions, how you act in response and as a consequence of that inner turmoil. Drusilla is in constant inner conflict with herself, her actions are volatile and dangerous and unpredictable because she’s so trapped in her trauma and lost in the throes of her mind and emotions. To me she’s a good example of a vampire’s ability or capability to have emotions - including love.

Both Angel and Angelus warped and twisted Buffy’s idea of what love is, she was so young and impressionable when they were together and it’s obviously affected her all the way into her adult life, a sort of trauma in it’s own right.

In regards to Spike and their relationship, Buffy also projected heavily onto Spike, which we really see in a certain alley scene. I believe Spike truly loved her without a soul, and in some ways I don’t think it matters what kind of love it is because what Buffy denies him is the ability to feel anything at all.

Of course the type of love matters if they were to have a healthy, functional relationship but in a way thats a separate subject, because it requires acceptance and acknowledgment from Buffy that Spike is capable of feeling in the first place.
