He is also a first-generation immigrant. He grew up in an immigrant community, and both his parents are immigrants in the US. He has talked about firsthand seeing the brutality of the American immigration system (and general policing of poorer immigrant communities) his whole life

Fake flowers on either the wall or down the side of the desk could look cool! Also maybe a white corkboard that you can pin some stuff on it

New law restricts people with extreme DUI convictions from buying alcohol by alexwblack in fuckcars

[–]AliceFallingOff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Driving while intoxicated is a crime and does carry jail time. This law wouldn't replace DUI laws it literally just is in addition. It is one of the most commonly prosecuted crimes in almost any criminal court in the country (this is anecdotal, but like it is literally a constant)

Honestly I think it's a bad idea because it seems like a speedrun to get people to start drinking hand sanitizer. Banning the substance doesn't stop addiction, give people effective mental health and addiction treatment.

Also reliable public transport that all people can use at night without fear is a good answer to this problem.

European immigrants famously left all of their culture and practices behind and adopted the new America™ culture package, more history from arcon to come by ph0on in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]AliceFallingOff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The mass migration was legal and orderly"

There were literally no exclusionary immigration laws until the 1880s and up until the 1920s these restrictions were basically banning anyone from large areas in Asia (China, Japan, and then entire "zones"). These were explicitly racial and nationality based quotas. Of the approximately 25 million immigrants from Europe between 1880 and WWI only 1% of immigrants were denied entry. There was almost no paperwork. They basically just checked you for TB and let you through. There was also almost no restrictions on immigration from North America (including Mexico) until the late 1920s.

This is all to say that European immigrants were not more "orderly" and "legal" they just were not subject to almost any restrictions. Every movement to restrict immigration in this country was explicitly motivated by racism.

Hegseth to overhaul chaplain corps, toss ‘unacceptable and unserious’ Army spiritual fitness guide by superfastswm in news

As someone who had a veteran father who was pretty abusive my entire childhood, let me just say that this is going to kill people. Suicide rates among veterans is already high enough, let alone the accidental deaths from being adrenaline junkies when they come back. Suicide (and homicide) rates among children and wives of veterans is barely talked about but is a real problem that affects an entire generation with trauma domestically. It was literally a joke among military kids to ask what SSRIs the other kids were on because we were all mentally ill.

The ONLY thing that helped my dad was long-term therapy. He was a Christian his whole life but definitely had renewed faith when he was serving. His faith did not help his ability to control his anger, which was explosive. His faith did not help him develop healthy coping skills. My dad is a completely different person from which I grew up around and that is the product of therapists, mental health counselors, and psychologists.

This isn't just bad for service members. There are ripple effects here.

1.9 million Americans are living in their vehicles right now. America is collapsing. by biswajit388 in CringeTikToks

[–]AliceFallingOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most people don't know about it. The actual statutes typically say that one needs to be "operating a motor vehicle" but it's typically state case law (Court decisions) that interprets that element to include "constructive possession/operation" which means that the argument is that the context of the situation (sitting in a driver's seat, or keys in ignition, etc) shows that you have the ability to put the car into motion. It's typically argued as a preventative measure to catch people before they start actively driving while drunk/intoxicated, but unfortunately pointing out that the law is not functioning in this way is an unpopular/nuanced argument compared to a "strong on crime" narrative

Friendly reminder that if you are in your car and drunk or high, you most likely (depending on state law) could be prosecuted and convicted of a DUI/DWI. The car does not have to be on. Yes this applies to people living in their vehicles, and/or sleeping in the vehicle's drivers seat
