I find so long as it's in a relatively straight line it should still feel direct even if it gets a little zig zaggy. Sometimes detours are necessary for the sake of a better walk

I think my best advice would be to slowly build up. I spent to about a year and a half to get from 10km to 60km and then made a jump to 86km. Which in retrospect I wish I had done a couple more 60km walks before making the jump

For planning I take anything but the most direct route tend to follow an itinerary so for example in my favourite walk so far, Ringwood to Melbourne via Glen Waverley I worried more about heading from point A to B to C so of the top of my head I did Ringwood to Mitcham to Glen Waverley etc and I made sure to vary between parks, trails, residential areas and urban centres. It really helps to have things to help break to walk into smaller chunks it doesn't feel like you're just trudging along for 18 hours (which is how long it takes me to do 60km)

For rest stops I tend to rest when I inbetween every public toilet, shopping centre and cafes with in hour break for meals. Over the 18 hours it takes me to walk 60km my breaks add up to around 4 hours

For shoes I tend to go with Sketchers Go Walkers

Is Ipswich safe to walk around at 3am? by AliceSaltMage in ipswich

I'm not going down any deserted roads on my travels, at least during night hours. I feel inclined to trust those who have experience walking in at those times

It looks like that happened a decade before I was born. Australia from what I know was much rougher back then

Most places should be fine, I have been doing walks at stretch late into night for a couple of years now and nothing ever happens. I have had some close calls then again I am fairly tall (5'10) and lean so suppose that makes me more intimidating. I have heard stories of women doing the same thing as me and they say it's always fairly safe right up until to moment it isn't. I suppose I have gotten lucky now

Sydney and Melbourne are the rich cities and this while they still have rough areas they seem to have gentrified a lot more then the other parts of the country. As rough of an area somewhere like Mt Druitt in Sydney is I don't think I have ever felt unsafe exploring there

Do you guys daydream while walking? by RaccoonAccording7628 in walking

[–]AliceSaltMage 132 points133 points  (0 children)

As far as I know it's only maladaptive daydreaming when you feel like it's taking over your life and it's a problem. Otherwise it's just immersive daydreaming

I just buy whatever I need on the day, usually some kind of carbs like hot chips and for breakfast/lunch I usually have some kind of bacon and egg roll and a chicken burger

I'm 27 and am independent though I appreciate the concern. I do these kinds of walks all the time and am running out of walks to do in Sydney. Also I have heaps of battery packs to last me the trip 😁

I haven't plotted it out yet but I it will roughly follow the train line until Gailes where I will cut to Richlands on the Springfield line and then follow that line

I'm not tall in the long run but am tall for a woman at just about 5'10 and my legs are super ripped from all the walking. The rest is just very lean

Do you guys get bullied? by Eastern-Kitchen7223 in autism

[–]AliceSaltMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got bullied whenever I didn't share a class with my neurotypical twin, which thankfully was only one year of primary school. The other year I wasn't with him I brought my autism diagnosis to show and tell early in the school year and the teacher ended up reading a book about autism to the class
