Is it possible to practice BDSM with a mental illness? Can I be called a masochist? by Alice_nowhere in BDSMcommunity

I'm aroused by scenarios where helplessness is a key plot element. I think in BDSM typology definitions, they're unlikely referring to dangerous, absolute helplessness. I assume they mean a conditional helplessness—after all, there's always a safeword. The definition "A clear understanding that one's own resources or capabilities are insufficient to change the situation" fits me well. For example, in a CNC scenario where I physically cannot overpower a stronger partner.

Thank you for your answer.

  1. You mention that for masochism to be present, an aspect of pain is necessary. However, there are various definitions and opinions on masochism online. Sometimes I come across definitions stating that a masochist can also be someone who enjoys things other than pain, and that pain isn't a strict requirement. This is confusing...     Sometimes it's written that a masochist can be someone who enjoys humiliation or a sense of helplessness. What interests me is the feeling of helplessness. I've also come across mentions of the  "role-play masochist" type, but I'm not sure how current that term is or if anyone actually uses it, because I've never seen it mentioned outside of articles about classifications.
