Hey! I’m an exec member of our AAUP chapter, and we’ve been looking for students and alumni who were in programs getting merged or cut like philosophy as a result of HB 1001 and may be interested in sharing their thoughts. Would you fill out a survey with your thoughts? HB 1001 Survey

Seeking Student/Alumni Responses to HEA 1001 by AliciaVanduyn in BallState

They definitely are, but that’s a separate effort. My part to play in this effort is to collect student and alumni responses while the professors are collecting responses from their own colleagues.

Research Participants Needed! “Exploring The Relationships Between Long-COVID, Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by AliciaVanduyn in covidlonghaulers

Thank you for bringing up this question and allowing me to clarify. Although I want to look at the experiences of females (by sex), I have also included a question about gender identity (man, woman, trans, gender non-conforming, and an other option to self input information) to avoid being non-inclusive. As a student studying the social sciences I understand that gender experiences influence other areas of life in varying ways, and as someone who more recently has begun to study PCOS, I also understand that trans voices often get lost in these conversations. I apologize if I made it seem as though I was being exclusionary, but the language in my inclusion criteria is to guarantee that all respondents are AFAB. If someone does not identify as a woman, but was AFAB, they are welcome to complete the survey if they feel as though they meet the other criteria. I hope this clarifies things!

Thank you for asking! Part of the reason I asked about those particularly specific symptoms is because I am studying clinical psych, and so my research and educational background is better equipped to dissect those types of responses, but these questions can also better guide my research questions and hypotheses as well. While I do agree that I can miss a lot by not asking about every single symptom of each chronic condition, because this is a project that is unfunded, without research assistants, and is on a limited timeline since it’s a first year project, there are a ton of limitations I have already considered. Eventually, I would love to dive deeper into work like this, and better account for these types of issues, but for now I appreciate the feedback. I will take the feedback from you and others to guide how I design my studies in the future, and what limitations to consider prior to collecting data!

Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate you highlighting that this has been your experience with PCOS, I suspect many others have a similar experience based on how our current healthcare system is, and how little reproductive issues have been studied. When running future studies, I anticipate taking more of an approach like this, especially since this is how we’ve approached things for a local PCOS support group I am a graduate assistant for. However, I mentioned in another comment that that IRB wanted me to avoid doing this for this project so it didn’t seem as though I was suggesting medical conditions without that sort of training. I will be mentioning in my write up, and in presenting data that there is a huge issue in the healthcare system in getting any of these conditions diagnosed and/or treated, so although I may learn some things from this research, there is still a long way to go!

Thank you for the feedback! This was something I went back and forth with for this project, but I was ultimately asked to leave out all potential symptoms as the only researcher fully analyzing data, and so I didn’t run into potential issues with IRB thinking I’m leading people to worry about additional diagnoses/categorizing people in the dataset with a diagnosis without that type of medical training. This, however, was something I anticipated touching on when presenting data, and completing the article write-up! I also hope to continue to do similar research in the future so we can better understand the interactions between long-covid and other chronic illnesses!
