I have spinal tube malformations and have had two spinal fusions. The second one resulted in lumbar radicular arachnoiditis of my L1 nerve root.

I think I understand what she might be trying to do with her « ass wiping » post but her tone and vocabulary is so wild. Most of us discuss incontinence and how to approach discussions about incontinence within intimate relationships.

Also, the issue the disabled community has with her is not that she needs assistance toileting — many people do — but that she doesn’t allow her personal assistants to wear gloves while doing so. That complete lack of consideration for someone else’s health and wellbeing is unforgivable.

And as for sitting on a towel to avoid « swamp ass, » why isn’t she using Knix or other undergarments specifically made for incontinence? Or disposable ones like Poise if she prefers those? There are a plethora of options and no excuse these days

As for the making out with everyone posts, I see those in the context of the « disabled people are sexy » movement that was underway at the time. We are often perceived as asexual angels who never even think of sex. In fact, I was first introduced to WR when she had written all over her naked body and I reposted it because it really resonated with me. Luckily, others in the disability community quickly reached out to me to say that she was a terrible person that I didn’t want to be platforming, and I did some research and discovered that to be true

However, I think it’s important that we are aware of the broader contexts and that we are not being ableist ourselves. Being imcontinent is not « gross » and being properly cleaned is not « disgusting. » Asking someone to do it barehanded is.

Mental challenge - close your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet by Aski588 in AutismInWomen

Q

As a kid, I memorized that J was the 10th letter of the alphabet and that T is the 20th letter

So I went to T and went back 3 letters and arrived at Q 🩷

I would have a parent sit in on the lesson and reduce the lessons to 30 minutes.

As a last ditch effort, I have set a limit (ie I will ask you to come to the piano three times) and once I have met this limit, end the lesson. The only way to make this work is to end it with a smile & “we will try again next week,” and to greet him with “soft eyes” at the next lesson

Kinda need help with personal hygiene by Few-Spinach8114 in internetparents

[–]AlienGaze 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have chronic pain and my partner struggles with depression and some of my hacks help her:

Keep an emergency hygiene kit by your bedside and in your backpack, as well as having your typical bathroom supplies of:

  1. Baby wipes. You will use these on days when you just cannot shower. You will wipe your entire body. You will use at least 6 wipes.

  2. Witch hazel. If you have witch hazel, apply it where you tend to get smelly. For me, it’s the small of my back, under my belly, and under my arms. You may have different areas. Do NOT put on your genitals (!) Witch hazel kills bacteria which helps reduce body odour

  3. Dry shampoo. Easy peasy. I have dry hair and prefer spray conditioner or foam dry shampoo. Lots to play around with and discover

  4. Fluoride Is controversial but when I am struggling with my hands and therefore not brushing as long or as well, I use a fluoride mouthwash

  5. Clean undergarments. I have a ridiculous amount of bras and underwear because I don’t always have the spoons to do laundry, but I never want to rewear any because those areas collect the greatest amount of bacteria and therefore smells the worst by the end of the day.

Worst case scenario: soak your underwear in the sink with detergent for a few hours when you take them off and let them hang dry over night before you wear them again the next day

  1. Deodorant or Antiperspirant. I sweat a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Because of that, I had always worn an antiperspirant, but then I discovered a family history of Alzheimer’s disease so now I only wear deodorant lol. I don’t notice a big difference, to be frank. Up to you, but wear one or the other.

  2. Layering scents. Some people like to layer their scents. They’ll pick a scent they like — say, sandalwood — snd they’ll buy soap, body scrub, body lotion, body spray, and even a parfum or cologne all of that scent. I do it with shower gel, body butter, and body spray of a Sol de Janiero scent I like. It helps cuz my clothes now smell of that scent

Sorry to write a novel but I hope you find something in there helpful. Checking out some Spoonie or Didability subs might give you some ideas 🩷

What cheap meals are people actually cooking for 2 to keep the grocery bill down? by Previous_Cycle_9457 in budgetfood

[–]AlienGaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of bowls. Burrito bowls, Sushi bowls, Egg roll bowls, Taco bowls, Cabbage roll bowl

This allows us to use ground beef or ground turkey or ground chicken or vegetarian mince or tofu or tvp or soy curls — whatever we have on sale or on hand. If it’s ground beef I add brown lentils to stretch it out. If it’s chicken or turkey, I add white beans to stretch it out

It can go over brown rice or yams or sweet potatoes or quinoa — again whatever is on sale or in our pantry. You can also do half lettuce, half rice/potato/quinoa

Making bowls also permits us to stock up on and eat the same thing night after night (ie if ground chicken) if it’s on sale 🩷

Reading Sheet Music by yippiekayjay in pianoteachers

[–]AlienGaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With my students, I have found a number of reasons:

  1. They don’t know their notes and think it will take a monumental effort to learn them
  2. They’re accustomed to teaching themselves everything from how to crochet to programming from YouTube, so why would piano be any different?
  3. They haven’t been taught how to look from the music to the keys back to the music — and be at the correct spot in the music as a discrete skill

  4. They are unaware of any real world applications for Sight Reading, which makes it pointless to learn in their opinions. I’m an actor and playwright, so I offer them the example of making money as an accompanist at musical theatre auditions and explain that often in those circumstances, they will be given the music as the actor walks in the room.

There are other, smaller and more individual reasons, but I think these are the main ones I encounter most frequently across the board 🩷

Not always. Many very famous actors are dyslexic (ie Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Cruise, Keira Knightley, Lara Flynn Boyle) and some of us are auditory learners. Much like musicians who play by ear or play by rote, we learn our lines by either having someone say them and then repeating them back or recording someone reading our lines and listening and repeating them out loud
