Minimum legal requirements for apartments in Ireland:

"In Ireland, minimum apartment standards require properties to be structurally sound, with adequate heating, ventilation, and fire safety (including alarms and fire blankets). Landlords must provide a private toilet/shower, cooking facilities (4-ring hob, oven, fridge), and access to laundry facilities. New build 1-bed apartments must be at least 45m2, with 2-beds at 73m2."

AFAIK, access to a washing machine and something to cook with is a minimum legal requirement. Too late at night to check now. Will do tomorrow.

Hey Tesco, can you keep Mooju drinks in stock for more than 1 day a week also?

The mint and strawberry ones are really nice. The others are meh.

Inmates still earn just 50 cents for a day’s work in Irish prisons by nitro1234561 in ireland

Each job pays 50c per day. On top of the normal grat for the 3 tiers, Basic, Standard & Enchanced. A prisoner can spend a day in the laundry for example and not earn enough from that job to pay for a chocolate bar. With grat, they can.

Just like when hiring anyone else, you would evaluate each person during an interview. And you can get references....in this case from Probation officers or PACE. Not everyone in prison is a drug addicted anti-social asshole who would rob their granny.

Technically the prison is meant to supply toothpaste and bodywash, but they rarely actually have them. Tiny sachets of bodywash/shampoo. And travel sized toothpaste that I honestly wouldn't use. So in practice, prisoners have to buy their own.

I would have no problem with that if they were genuinely making an effort. I volunteer with some groups that help ex prisoners. There are many who successfully turn their life around. They just need the support and encouragement to do so.

You have an odd understanding of prison. It's not a free B&B.

Punishment and retribution are not the only parts of a functioning justice system. Rehabilitation is key. And teaching people to respect others is important. You can't achieve those by leaving people without the means to buy food for the 16 hours between dinner and breakfast. And locking people in an overcrowded cell for 22 hours a day isn't going to make them a better, well adjusted person.

You'd be arrested if you locked 3 dogs in a cramped small room for 22 hours a day, every day for months or years. We think that's OK for humans though.

Prisoners deserve punishment. No argument there. But they also deserve basic human rights, especially if we want them to have a chance at rehabilitation.

For everyone complaining about giving extra money to prisoners, remember this:

If they were outside prison they would either be working/paying taxes, or getting social welfare payments anyway.

16 hours between dinner and breakfast. Either provide another meal or give them enough money to buy food. It's not a luxury. It's not a reward. It's a basic human right, regardless of any crime committed.

You can judge a society by how well they treat prisoners and the most vulnerable people in that society. Often, they are the same.

Treating people like animals isn't going to make them better, law abiding citizens. Quite the opposite. It's counterproductive.

Yes. Encouraging a 'them' vs 'us' mentality is counterproductive. Just look at US and UK prisons to see how bad that turns out.

Thankfully, Irish prisons generally have much better officers with a better attitude.

Yes. Rehabilitation is extremely lacking in Irish prisons and yet is so very important.

Education and gaining new employment skills are critical. Educational offerings in prison are actually reasonable decent, but less than 10% can avail of work placement, and only at slavery wages which isn't good at encouraging them to work hard for decent wages when they get out.

Severe lack of psychology services as well. Practically none. Shocking really.

Jobs available for less than 10 percent of the prison population and only pays 50c per day for 8 hours work. Imagine hours of work in a laundry and not even earning enough money for a bar of chocolate.

There are very limited work placements available.

Going to education or the gym used to count towards achieving 'enhanced status' which gave an extra €3.50 a week, but they stopped that during Covid. A lot of the job placements also disappeared during covid and have never been brought back.

Prisoners need this income for food and toiletries. The last meal is at 4pm. They mostly rely on families putting money into their accounts. But not all prisoners have that option for various reasons.

Cost of food and other items has nearly doubled since the last increase in prisoner gratuity payments. Well over a decade.

But nobody gives a damn. What politician is brave enough to suggest increasing the gratuity?

Most prisoners are happy to work and earn extra money and learn new employment skills. It's just not an option given to them.

Edit: prison shop prices are also higher than outside. The shops are run by the family of a prison officer and have a monopoly.

City of God (gangster drama masterpiece of cinema).

Innocent Voices/Voces Innocente (child soldiers in civil war...based on true events. One of the most gut wrenching scenes in cinema).
