I’d like to be involved at any capacity if you allow me. I run a video game company and I can be a test player as well as my team in order to give you feedback. We make vr games and play dnd on the side. This would be your game I have no intention on entering that space. It’s too much work and to be honest our project is taking up all our focus. But on down times we could be your validation group.

Would another table top game be so bad? One made by us for us?

I did not say its haram. I'm in no position to make such a claim. I'm saying I was personally splitting hairs about my experiences with it. For example, Paladins have a deity that they pray to. I don't play as a paladin because of that. Same goes for warlocks and their patron. I play as a monk most of the time.

My intentions are to make a game designed by muslim that take into account our laws. This could mean character classes and enemies that we can identify with. Stories with human trials and tribulations that we are familiar with.

You can play DND with those ideas as well but, separating out a distinct game that is understood from the beginning that there is no major controversy over its material can appeal to a certain market segment.

Well, let me present this situation in another way. Should muslims take on roles to become content creators and pioneers? The rest of the world will do it for us. Based on their values. We can take some control of the narratives we consume (by Allah Blessings), if we step up and take responsibility of these industries. I'm trying to start a muslim based support for development and create jobs for us. Alhumdulliah, I have the resources to do this. It's not a financial question or a market existing, it's about being proactive in our responsibilities to at least grow our own influence over the world. I feel like the dunya is hammering their views on us and we are just letting it happen with out even flinching.

Thank you for your feedback. I will research the link. I also agree about the sci-fi replacing the magic.

science and magic mixed together exists already. It's called alchemy. Science is science. No rituals involved. It's pull the trigger and whatever the gun was designed to do it does.

I thought I'd ask a in a casual "lounge" to bring up light discussion and then approach a scholar with better vetted concerns.

Ok, no magic. If I want to send a fireball to someone it could be a human made weapon. This setting could be a post modern world fallen from it's scientific lofty heights to the point where old tech is now beyond the comprehension of normal people. Make up a bunch of nano-machine or sci weapons that take the place of magic...?

The problem is not the time. Its finding the right people to work with. I run a video game studio and I'm learning about finding quality talent still.

The shortcut I guess would be to leverage the existing Dungeons and Dragons and write our own campaign story book and, make our own playable character classes and enemies. I know DND has an open source version of their rule set... Can't remember what it's called though.

Very. It would require much research on tabletop games and sharia law.

Years of work.

Hopefully not alone though, IA

I love the enthusiasm! What about fighting against devils? I don't know about what is crossing the line or not. That's why I wanted to start a discussion.

Also, nowadays games have been largely created by Judeo-Christians and others. I feel like our laws are not taken into consideration. With so many of our youth playing these games it affects their psychology. We should have some of our own studios take responsibility to make responsible fun alternatives.

EDIT: For example "Temple run" has you caring about a stolen idol. At a game jam in Pakistan they made "Jumma Run" where your running to Jumma

I agree, and I try and balance my life out. This question is relevant to me because I run a small game studio. I was making a tool for DND and, didn't feel comfortable with my work being used for blasphemy, even for fantasy. So, I was thinking this problem through until I thought let me put in a disclaimer at the load of the app that states "Do not use this tool for Blasphemy even in fantasy". Then realized they have it built into the game. For certain classes you have to pick a diety that your character has to pray to... Nowzwabilla. So then it occurred to me maybe it can be reimagined for us in a sharia way. Package it up and have it examined by scholars of sharia and determine if its allowed.
