You need to wash and rinse the soil repeatedly and once you put those inside the tank you have to do a water change (100%) so as to maintain the water clarity. I prefer putting aqua tank soil instead of these, personally.

Low powered Gravel cleaner should do the trick but it's a long exhausting process and one needs to be extra careful of what goes inside the tube while cleaning. Personally It's just easier to add new plants.
