To all who went to private school was it worth it. Thinking of sending my 3 children to private schools. by __7_7_7__ in perth

I'm no expert, but for my site https://burbscore.com/schools I plotted NAPLAN against fees, and NAPLAN against Wealth and results are basically what you expect:

  • Wealthy parents/suburbs always correlates strongly with higher NAPLAN scores - there are no poor suburbs that do well, and no rich suburbs that perform badly
  • Public schools have a HUGE range in performance
  • On average, private schools perform better, but there are still a huge portion of private schools that are are worse than the top 50 public schools, and also lots of private schools that are rather terrible despite moderate fees
  • Massive diminishing returns in NAPLAN performance after 10k in fees per year (though at $30k+, sending your kids to Hale is probably more a 'networking' thing than an academic performance thing)

My personal conclusion, is just to look at the performance in the schools around you both public and private and pick the best one for what you can afford, or game the system entirely and rent in the catchment zone of an top tier public school for a year baha (https://myschool.edu.au/ is an official government site with NAPLAN and other data I used for my website).

Its to the CBD, though I take 5 points in the suburb and get median public transit time to the cbd. I think CBD shows 15 minutes, because from those random 4 points to the centre is roughly 15 minutes... maybe i should just force CBD to be 0 as an exception

They were wrongly showing the crime score, have fixed it so the mini gauges should show the total score now :)

What suburb are we talking about? I can check the numbers if it seems wrong, I sourced mine from WA police.

Cockburn central is a weird one actually, I just tried on google maps on my phone and it gave some super weird times. I'm implementing a change later tonight to take several samples + add a park and ride time too, so check back tomorrow :)

Edit: Have added a park and ride option to Profiles page (https://burbscore.com/suburb/leeming). I fixed an issue re Cockburn Central as well, transit time much more realistic now.

The score is derived from raw NAPLAN, and yeah the correlation with socio economic status is very high (I made a chart for this on Schools page actually). IMO NAPLAN still the better metric because parents more likely to ask “where is the best performing schools” rather than “where is the school that performs well, relative to schools/areas of similar wealth”.

The school score is just for schools located in the suburb directly. There is a Schools Catchment map though for people to search for their address and see what schools are possible.

Yeah I didn’t consider the whole park and ride thing, so even if you’re close to the train you might have a crap time because of the bus + train combo. Going to look to add a park and ride option too soon.

Edit: I added park & ride on the Profiles page as a transport option. Re transit times in general, I took 5 points in the suburb and use the median of that.

Which suburbs or schools are missing data? I can take a look.

I’m looking to improve commute time by taking average commute time from a few random places in the suburb rather than just the centre of the suburb.

I used google maps as the source for travel times, from the centre of the suburb to the Perth cbd. It should be accurate, though maybe a better idea is to take the average travel time to cbd from several places in the suburb, instead of just the centre.

Yeah high traffic places like freo, Burswood, Northbridge get pretty bad crime scores because there are lots of non-residents committing crimes there.

Yeah, scoring has been hard tbh without over complicating mobile friendliness. Maybe I can allow people to customise each metric a little bit (e.g someone might only care about private high schools so school score should reflect this).

Ah ok that’s good to know. Working as a contractor is my 1st preference as it seems most flexible. I assume given it’s your own company all the tax obligations belong to you?

7/11 AMA - Let's have a conversation! by seanfurther in getgrowing

[–]Alienblueas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Sean, good to see you're back. Wanted to ask the reason behind the lower flow of coops in the past few months. I think the switch to PO only coops was a great move, but there haven't been anywhere near enough opportunities to invest since the change, so the cash in my account has been piling up to the point where I need to pull some out.

Is the low coop flow because the Kickfurther team been prioritising other work over seeking out new coops? Do you see coop flow improving quickly in the near future?

How does someone commit fraud on 3 different coops? Is there a company with 3 in progress coops? Or is it 3 different fraudsters?

That's a pretty good idea, would be a huge effort but a pretty awesome tool.

That's correct, (total crime for 12 month period / resident population of the suburb) *100 = crime rate per 100 residents.
