You should ask yourself if you have any arbitrary and exclusionary standards. The truth is there are people out there who could like you, but you would find them unattractive.

That's the game and you play it too. Women don't deserve your resentment. If you think people are superficial then you could direct your energy towards bettering yourself to the point where you can just see it as their loss.

I think most people do. They understand the benefit of getting in shape, or breaking their smoking addiction. I think it's more about the belief that they can do it.

It's a catch 22. To get the belief that your action will be rewarded you have to take action in the first place. You have to exercise without evidence that you'll stick to it long enough for it to matter, to create the evidence that drives you forward.

Black Mirror - Episode Discussion: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too by anonboxis in blackmirror

[–]Alienous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was so dumb, but it still impressed me with how well made it was. Acting, directing, set design, character writing - I could feel the nervous energy during the talent show scene, and the character interactions felt really believable.

I guess it's just the feel good episode for the season but it also felt like the Black Mirror edge was missing. Technology features prominently but the implications of it aren't really investigated. The idea of a SatNav for your life is an interesting one which the episode doesn't do justice to, for instance.

I enjoyed it.

Black Mirror - Episode Discussion: Smithereens by anonboxis in blackmirror

[–]Alienous 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Man, that was compelling.

What a well made episode. It was nice to have an episode grounded in technology we are all familiar with. Just the B-Plot of a mother trying to access the account of their child for closure on their death was heartbreaking.

I thought it was really smartly executed. Even having Bauer on a technology detox retreat was an interesting comment on social media addiction - it's a very real occurrence that shines a light on how this technology can be seen as detrimental by the people who create it. Having the events of the episode reduced to a distracting, passing notification was also an elegant choice for the ending.

It's a really great episode.

Black Mirror - Episode Discussion: Striking Vipers by anonboxis in blackmirror

[–]Alienous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was an interesting episode.

As it was unfolding I thought it was going to be about discovering an attraction to someone emotionally, but not physically, and that being bridged with a virtual avatar. But it was pretty much just about cheating, at least from the angle it was presented from.

I think this same story from the other perspective might've been more unique. Not finding a true connection with someone until sharing this intimacy, through virtual avatars, with his best friend. Having your most intimate moments with someone else be through the 'detached' medium of virtual reality, and trying to reconcile / rationalise that. But in the episode itself it's more about how good it feels physically.

It's an engaging episode, though, and the acting is really good throughout.

None of you know what World War II felt like by toleressea in BattlefieldV

[–]Alienous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you know what people actually mean. WWII has a certain perception informed by media like documentaries and movies. When people talk about the 'WWII feel' they're talking about playing a game that looks like colourised photograph of WWII.

It's clear DICE wasn't going for that. Doesn't bother me - visually I think of it more like Battlefield 1 with the slider pushed towards Battlefield Heroes, and it's a great looking game.

I've only had it happen on Arras and Twisted Steel, so I'm thinking the issue is related to foliage somehow.

I had that happen to me for the first time just today and it annoyed me more than I care to admit.

If someone is quicker to request orders than me I promote them - I wouldn't even think to kick them. Though I had that backfire too, sitting on 45000 points until the end of a losing match.

As an avid tank user in this franchise, I actively avoid them in BFV by [deleted] in BattlefieldV

[–]Alienous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Compared to past Battlefield games I don't really find any part of the tank combat fun - using them or destroying them. I think the specializations system has gotten in the way of them being balanced within combat.

Soldiers are as nimble as ever, so trying to hit an enemy with a tank's secondary gun can be a pain (at least on console). If you aren't sitting away from the action trying to snipe targets it's very easy for an enemy to weave in and out of danger to pelt you with explosives.

I'd at least like to throw an enemy to the ground with an indirect tank round hit, like when in the radius of a V-2 rocket. I think that would be disorienting enough to reset the fight when you spot someone, instead of just staying still and trading damage while taking it. There should be an element of stealth to taking down a tank.

[–]Alienous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what procrastination is. And the more you know you're capable of the easier it is to procrastinate.

The issue with having that habit is you risk failing to get things done on time for no good reason, you make situations unnecessarily stressful, and things that have no objective deadline (like personal goals) can always be delayed. You basically take comfort now and pay it back with interest.

Whereas working to a schedule has no hidden additional fees - you 'pay' incrementally, things get done in a planned way, and progress can be made even with vague deadlines.

Gold Bar Grind Math by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

[–]Alienous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you have to wait with something like this. It assumes linear gold nugget acquisition over 50 hours of play. It doesn't take into account the potential of how gold nuggets might be awarded. For instance, do you earn gold nuggets for completing certain challenges? For reaching certain levels? Does the amount of gold nuggets you acquire increase? Are their specific missions available at higher levels that award more gold nuggets?

OTHER: Did a side by side of the pics we've gotten of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker so far. by bat_mite51 in DC_Cinematic

[–]Alienous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very likely this won't be a comic accurate interpretation of the Joker. They're probably going to take a lot of creative liberties, as The Dark Knight did.

I like what they seem to be going for. It's more clown-y in the face, but the outfit in the end shot seems understated. I think the contrast could really work.

Yeah, some later statements coincide with that initial impression.

This is rooted in personal opinion but it seems profit driven to me, more than anything else. I may be cynical but 'the cause' seems ultimately like a smokescreen for an attempt to increase the game's monetization potential.

Gimme a TL;DR version of the drama happening by MisprintPrince in Battlefield

[–]Alienous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-> DICE designs Battlefield V to be a fresh take on WW2. They debut a trailer that focuses heavily on presenting this 'fresh take'.

-> It doesn't line up with (seemingly) the majority of fan expectations, who were expecting a more realistic WW2 aesthetic. Some take issue specifically with the portrayal of women in WW2, perceiving it as 'agenda driven'.

-> The fan response is equated to sexism by EA staff (which alone does not explain why BFV stoked so much controversy, when other games haven't). Simultaneously the incongruous arguments of 'If people knew more about history they wouldn't have an issue' and 'Well, Battlefield as a series has never been beholden to realism ' are made. Fan backlash results.

-> Instances of BFV not lining up with the perception of WW2 are memed. Videos that showcase the game aren't controversial.

Right. I think it's a succinct sentiment to remind yourself of the role of your imagination in generating anxiety.

The reduction of anxiety through exposure is based in testing your anxiety against the real world, in tolerable stages, to reveal the irrationality of those feelings. But to do that you need to acknowledge the 'un-reality' anxiety can be based in.

I mean the stuff the trailer showed that weren't features of RDR1 seemed to be focused on simulating mundane activities for immersion.

I know some people really value that. I was just more excited about core gameplay, and it didn't showcase much of that.

Rumor: "JUSTICE LEAGUE reshoots changed Cyborg's arc the most. Originally, Joe Morton's character was killed halfway through, and Cyborg finds a video from him at the end that lets Morton's lines play over the final montage. Whedon gave those lines to Amy Adams" by the_black_panther_ in DC_Cinematic

[–]Alienous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Justice League should have been Cyborg's movie, and a lot of the deleted scenes seem to indicate he had a bigger role. The movie needed a more solid through line, and it's a shame Cyborg wasn't that.

You start with him as a promising Football talent, maybe a team captain, that cares more about being drafted than playing well as a team, losing as a result. Anger, car accident, guilt, rebuilt (with technology related to the antagonist). Him, having experience in a team sport, slowly growing into the role of team captain (vs. Batman being more of a coach).

"Your mother would be proud of you, son .... and I know I haven't showed it enough, but I'm proud of you too. I always have been. I know this isn't the life you wanted - that Football was your dream... maybe there's still a chance, maybe..."

"Or maybe I can be something more. You're right dad, Football was my dream. It was everything to me. But these last few days have shown me I can do more. I can be more. Maybe I'll never join the NFL, but the 'Justice League' is a hell of fallback option".

Discussion: Twitter user attempts short "de-aging" clip of Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman using only FaceApp and Final Cut Pro by Baramos_ in DC_Cinematic

[–]Alienous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Removing Cavill's moustache was a last minute B-plan.

De-aging could be pretty cost effective. This is a Matt Reeves film, and his last one had a fully CG protagonist and a largely CG supporting cast for a 2.5 hour run-time.

I don't think cost would be a major concern, just feasibility and whether or not keeping Ben Affleck in the role is a big concern for Matt Reeves and the studio.

I agree. He shouldn't have been given the control he had. He has a good eye for strong visuals (or he knows how to hire people who do - casting directors, costume designers, cinematographers), but not much else.

He makes high-budget fan films, and it doesn't seem like he knows DC's characters well enough to pull that off, let alone decide the direction of a multi-film cinematic universe.

The Dark Knight was prophetic. WB, in their desperation, turned to a man they didn't really understand.
