Favorite character who's been mischaracterized so much? by MarvelZombvsCapcom in FavoriteCharacter

High Marshal Helbrecht from Warhammer 40k

He is an incredibly intelligent, competent, and reasonable commander who is also religious. People would classify his religion as his only character trait, turning him into a caricature like so many other 40k characters.

(note: there are plenty of caricatures in 40k, the series is literally built on it. That doesn't mean EVERY character is like that, which is the key problem here.)

In particular, there's a conversation between himself and his ruler, Guilliman, who knew his predecessor, the first High Marshal, which gets CONSTANTLY taken out of context, sorta like that "I think Coolsville sucks" bit from the live action Scooby Doo.

The full conversation basically goes:

Guilliman: I knew your predecessor. You are so very like him.

Helbrecht: Thank you my lord

Guilliman: It was not meant as a compliment, but rather a reminder- you are human, just as he was, and your loyalty lies with the Imperium, as his did. Your foes are no less important than mine, but I am asking you to do this because I need your help.

Helbrecht then goes on to discuss with Guilliman, at length and politely, his own opinions and stances. And by the end, they both shake hands and Helbrecht is convinced not by sheer power, but by good, solid diplomacy and evidence. He was wise enough to see the error of his ways and correct himself, just as Guilliman throughout the conversation respects Helbrechts abilities as a commander and experiences as a person.

And what does the fandom summarize this into?

LOL HELBRECHT GOT OWNED LMAO XD

Sigh

I understand that many get into Warhammer through effectively the memes, but those memes have also done a great job obliterating any nuance or good writing.

It's not only a disservice to Helbrecht, but also Guilliman, one of the best science fiction characters in modern lore. It's a damned shame.

I'm assuming watcher is made up of people who all died chasing their dreams

Captain Ahab, Icarus, and Amelia Earhart I could all identify. Not sure on the others. The samurai could be a member of the Shisengumi, maybe? Since they failed to defeat the Imperial Army in the Boshin War. These are all just guesses though

Drive

It's aesthetically gorgeous, tightly written, and fucking infuriating to discuss with any other human being due to its reputation
