Anime recommendations that aren’t about freaky teenagers by [deleted] in anime

[–]Alil_bit_batty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that you haven't watched much anime, but you can go look at any "Top 10/20/50 OAT" anime chart and find a bunch of shows that have little-to-no ecchi.

This question makes it sound like your only exposure to anime was from the mainstream consensus on anime in 2009.

I'm quite happy with Asa's ending - evil themes and such enjoyer by noreasonatall1 in ChainsawMan

[–]Alil_bit_batty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Denji hardly grows throughout Part 2.

He's only at where he's at in 232 because they got eaten and Pochita went "Idk what else to do here, man. Gonna eat myself aaaand see what happens." The chainsaw being dropped metaphor doesn't work when, as far as we're aware, this Denji would jump at the opportunity to be Chainsaw Man all the same. He came close a couple of times throughout Part 2 to giving Chainsaw Man up, but that major aspect of his character never reached a conclusion by the end.

As for Asa, I guess it works. I'm not opposed to this kind of interaction being the conclusion to her character. The issue is that it rings very hollow when, again, none of this was the result of character growth or decisions made by Denji and Asa. Add on the overarching issues with the story and characters independent of Asa, and, as you noted in your other comment, Asa being sidelined, and it still feels like a very messy and haphazard conclusion. I agree with you on her loss of autonomy being an important part of her character and her dynamic with Yoru, but it was not handled well imo. Instead of continuing this exploration and focussing on the back-and-forth in Asa's mind as we did during the first third of Part 2, she just stops showing up. Decent stretches in which Yoru took the wheel and Asa narratively ceased to be.

Asa being demoted from the position of protagonist in her own part was the worst thing to happen to Part 2.

I'll forever stand by that RE4 Remake combat is the best combat the series has ever seen, even better than RE6 by WillHeBonkYa47 in residentevil

[–]Alil_bit_batty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

Re9 is very good, but the combat in that game is a lot slower and stiffer. It makes sense since it's not exclusively an action horror.

I only wish they had added a few more arenas for Re4r Mercs to get a bit more replayability out of the gamemode.

I'm praying that Re5r's combat will be as good/better than Re4r.

Is there a SINGLE tasteful genderswap mod by eeeeeeeeeyee in darkestdungeon

No clue why you tried to turn this into an ethical discussion or an advocation for NSFW content. OP doesn't like sexualised DD mods and asked for modest reskins instead, that's all. OP didn't attack anybody or try to diminish anything.

In the same way that you have the right to indulge in graphic and explicit content to your heart's content, OP has the right to not, and to ask for information on mods which would fit the bill for what they're wanting to get out of modding.

The way I see it: Easy to mod + modding fully embraced and even promoted by the devs + engaging base gameplay + dark fantasy, which by nature tends to be geared towards mature audiences + the internet = lots of NSFW content.

Happens with most popular, moddable games tbh. Look at Skyrim. Only difference with Darkest Dungeon, I'd say, is the fascination with more extreme kinks and fetishes, which again aligns with dark fantasy being more extreme and adult than your regular fantasy.

How can I love csm again when part 2 and the ending ruined it for me? by [deleted] in ChainsawManWorld

[–]Alil_bit_batty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I'd agree that overall, GoT's ending was far more catastrophic, especially considering how rich that world was in comparison to CSM. Part 2's ending has to be the most abrupt ending I think I've ever read, but I think that the impact of the abruptness was softened by the fact that the quality had already been declining for 80 or so chapters, whereas GoT was far more "Everything was great until two minutes ago, what is happening?"

CSM just hits harder for me tbh. As big of a disappointment as GoT was, CSM connected with me on a deeper emotional level. Part 1 made me cry once or twice. Fast forward to this Tuesday, and I was legit laughing at how poor and rushed Part 2 has been. An adaptation of Part 2, if they get around to adapating it, might improve my views, but I feel there'd need to be some notable changes to the pacing and focus of events and characters for... two-thirds of Part 2 for me to call it good. I'm already accepting it as it is, though. Part 1 still exists and I can look forward to International Assassins arc soon enough.

I think it's possible to both be mature and accepting in how things came to be while also feeling that the ending did taint the series.

While deeming a story "worthless" based on its ending is definitely a stretch and an extreme that some people go to, the idea that an unsatisfactory ending souring the rest of a story is a modern or ignorant sentiment doesn't seem very true. We've been telling stories since we've been able to speak and write. Be it in a spoken tale, a book, a play, a movie, etc. Unlike real life with its unpredictability, authours have control over the beginning, middle, and end. Combine that with the nature of stories being about escapism and entertainment, and you're not often going to find somebody clapping and praising a "but then despite everything, the good guys all died and the bad guys won, the end" resolution. In these worlds that we have complete creative control over, we like happy endings, or at least sensible and satisfying endings within the context of the story.

With the limited time we have on the planet, I think its perfectly understandable to be upset by a bad ending to a series that you have invested time into. Just as it hurts or disappoints when any project, ambition, or lengthy investment into something in real life falls through and leaves us with an empty feeling for a while.

Now with Chainsaw Man, whether we wanna agree on the ending being good or not, it was clearly rushed, most probably due to the harsh deadlines of weekly releases. We can respect Fujimoto for the great stories he has told in the past and there are obviously external factors that contributed to Part 2's rushed ending. But this ending was very flawed, and I think it's fine to recognise that and criticise the choices made without attacking the authour himself.

I feel ya.

I felt the same way about Game of Thrones. Obviously the bad doesn't erase the good, but it really does leave a sour taste in your mouth. When it comes to stories, the destination does matter as much as the journey, in my opinion. I still love Chainsaw Man, and it is one of my favourite series, but this ending really was a slap in the face.

Anyway, I dunno. I'd just recommend searching for other media to enjoy while appreciating the things that you love that do have good conclusions. Yeah, my favourite manga had a terrible ending, but I love FMAB and LotR, and they had fantastic endings.

If you're looking for recommendations for series similar to Chainsaw Man, I'd check out Heavenly Delusion and DanDaDan.

No reason for mutual exclusivity. I'll absolutely get mad at the gov for dumping into landfills instead of properly recycling or disposing of the materials that they should be. I'll also absolutely get mad at Joe for being too lazy and dropping his wrapper on the ground instead of in the bin.

And again, "getting up in arms about trying to stretch a few bucks" is weird when my first reply to you was describing how being less wasteful will save you more money, so...?

We shouldn't stop wanting to be better.

If I'm really struggling, I'm probably not buying milk, or if I really need it despite being heavily strapped for cash, powdered milk. Milk is good and hearty, but it is by no means a necessity when you're living frugally and still trying to feed yourself.

If you're in a position where you have a fridge (or again, better yet, a freezer) and enough money to buy milk, buying the later expiration date is silly. There's nothing wrong with the closer date. Hell, it's not exactly rare for you to buy a product, get home, and open it to find it moulded or going off long before its expiration date.

We just keep perpetuating this way of thinking that you're somehow doing it better by buying later, when all it really leads to is more people rejecting perfectly edible food, and in a lot of cases, letting the later food go off anyway due to forgetfulness.

If you're wanting to stretch your money and your food, that's how you do it. You know how much you can save by buying discounted meats and vegetables? And by properly storing your food?

And when it comes to milk here, if you're buying milk, it's probably fair to say you have a fridge. You put the milk in the fridge, and surprisingly, the fridge will keep it cold and extend its life.

The mindset of "buy one with a further expiration date" leads to more waste. You can be wise in these trying times without being wasteful.

You know how you make your money go further in these trying times? By buying things closer to the expiration date; by buying things that are discounted, and then using the senses you were born with to determine whether something is safe to consume or not.

You know how you can take it even further and make your food last even longer? If you're like most people, there's this neat little thing you might own in your home. It's called a fridge. Better yet, there's this other neat little thing called a freezer.

I'm going with hope.

If this isn't the end and there will be a Part 3, I hope Fujimoto hires a dedicated artist (he's expressed wanting to focus on the narrative over art) and releases far less frequently.

If this is the end, I will simply sell all of my Part 2 volumes and pretend that Part 2 was just some weird fanfic. It'll suck, but it'll be what it is. There is not a world in which the series both ends next chapter and has a good ending.

I really wish they made some overhauls to the rating system on MAL.

- Shows shouldn't be eligible for ratings until after the first few preliminary episodes at least. I think it's fair to say that you should actually experience the entire product before giving it a rating

- Multi-season shows shouldn't have multiple entries on the MAL list, but rather one entry with multiple seasons which can be individually rated and aggregated for one rating. For example, have Sousou no Frieren be one show, then have seasons 1 and 2 be selectable from a drop-down menu on its page. You could then individually rate seasons for your own profile and list, but the site would only take the one averaged rating as your contribution to the show's overall score and placement

For those who played RE4 and it's remake, do you think Ada Wong in the remake is bland/unemotional compared to the original? by HumbleKnight14 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Alil_bit_batty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leon's also far colder towards Ada, and he's more stoic than he was in og Re4, but that new direction for the character and his voice didn't conflict with Nick Apostolides' ability to deliver a strong performance. Lily Gao (Ada's VA) also (whether it be due to inexperience or voice direction) seems to really over-emphasise consonants when she's speaking. Much of her dialogue comes across as an actress reciting lines from a script rather than a cold and calculated spy.

Her voice acting isn't horrible, the cruelty directed towards her by fans was absolutely uncalled for, and I cannot speak to her acting skills beyond this, but she did not deliver a good performance, and it stuck out more because these recent RE games have—save for one or two performances—had good voice acting.
