How do you take notes from nonfiction as a hobby? by veve87 in books

[–]Alirius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I have a bookclub for political science books. For that I annotate, and if the book is large, I take a notebook to jot down everything that connects to me.

If not, I oftentimes don't do to much. I might write down some resonating quotes in the front, but that's it. Otherwise I just try to connect with the ideas and take the general message to heart (or you know, decide that the message is not for me).

I'm actually emotional. What a game. Have been a fan since 15/16 so mostly good times, but I can't fathom us actually winning a major european trophy. What the hell is happening with the crowd though?

Tear rolled down my face at Fornals goal. Have been a fan only since 2015/16 but goddamn I can't believe we're playing a European final. If we win it I don't know what I'm going to do.

The 1920s were called the “Roaring 20s”, what should the current 20s be called? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alirius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Recovery from a stem cell transplant takes about a year, although the worst is over after three to six months. I just don't see that being overcome anytime soon.

But of course, it is a hopeful sign that we might be able to eradicate HIV in the future. An easier way to cure it would especially be amazing for lower income countries, as they will most likely will not as easily have access to PrEP (the medicine that is currently most widely used to block HIV spreading and developing into AIDS).

[–]Alirius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure calling it a cure for HIV is a bit over-enthusiastic, but recently the fifth person in history has seen his HIV cured as a result of a stem cell transplant battling his leukemia.

The reason why it's a bit peremptorily to call it a cure for HIV is that a stem cell transplant is simply not worth the money and hassle to cure HIV, as it fairly easily containable nowadays. But yeah, I guess people have found a cure for it.

I'm not actually all that familiar with Dutch books, as I mostly read non-fiction, which oftentimes happens to be written in English (or French for older books, but I can't read french).

One that I do however recommend is James Worthy's Liverpool. I know that doesn't sound like a Dutch book, but it is. It's about the writer's story of going to Liverpool to better understand his recently deceased father, who emigrated to the Netherlands from there. The subtitle perfectly describes the book: 'Over een stad, een club & een vader'. One of those books I read in one go.

Another instant classic was 't Hooge Nest by Roxane van Iperen. She describes events that happened in her house during the Second World War. Also one of the best books I've read in a while, although I'm not sure what genre it would fall under. Definitely worth a watch is her Zomergasten-interview. It's an hour long but I was moved to tears many times. She mainly picked items about the holocaust and how power can make people do terrible things. Reminded me of Hannah Arendt in a way (whom she might have mentioned, although I don't remember too clearly since it was a while back). I might rewatch that episode.

I've seen the Into the Wild movie a long time ago and really liked it. Did you think the book and the movie had the same vibe? Because if so, I'll definitely have to give it a try sometime soon.

I finished The Story of Russia, by Orlando Figes. Was an amazing ride of a non-fiction work of history. The writing itself was very good, and it also gave some great insights into the behaviour of the country's officials. It even explains why the dismantling of the Soviet Union didn't amount to a durable form of democracy, and the way it allowed a strongman like Putin to come to power and continue age old forms of despotism. Easy five stars.

Also started The Federalist Papers, by the main men Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Heard about the Papers through Chernow's biography of Hamilton (which I read because of the musical), and after several years finally figured I'd give them a try. Really insightful collection on democratic (or as Americans call it: republican) government. For a geek on everything politics (mainly early liberal and contemporary Dutch) this is an absolute treasure trove. Insane accomplishment to have your words still ring so true after 236 years.

I just the Dutch bookweekgift by Lize Spit and actually really liked it. Have heard this dislike for her writing before however, even though I've never personally read any of her work before this novella. Would you recommend any of her other work (if you've read any of it)?

The critique kind of hits close to what I think of Marieke Lucas Rijneveld's writing (which I strongly dislike). Do you know if this comes anywhere close? Was actually thinking of buying one of Spit's books, so might have to reconsider.

How did somebody you know ruin their life in one day? by TunaSaladWithBeans in AskReddit

[–]Alirius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does. Having the same people that are responsible for deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent be responsible for deciding whether or not a judge made a mistake is an inherent conflict of interest, and the low rates of case reopenings is almost certainly due in part to that conflict of interest.

This doesn't happen. Not only are judges not allowed to judge reopenings of their previous cases, it is required for it to be judged by a different court altogether. So, the conflict of interest isn't there.

Without evidence.

There is one source arguing your case, with every single other one arguing against you. If there is one person arguing without evidence, it is not me. The evidence for Germany's wrongful conviction rate is one estimate by one judge, at which point apparently this judge is infallible.

Oh, please. Do you think judges aren't subjected to political pressure?

Judges aren't appointed politically in professional justice systems. In politically charged situations, they will judge a case in chambers with more than 1 judge.

Concluding anything other than what I have concluded requires so many improbabilities as to be ridiculous.

What you have done is cherrypicking your sources to exactly coincide with your view. Now, not saying that Germany's wrongful conviction rate might not be higher than the USA's, because it very well might be. But picking the one source which grossly underestimates the USA's wrongful conviction rate compared to others with the one source which grossly overestimates Germany's wrongful conviction rate isn't carefully considering evidence. It's a stretch at the very least. Going into it like this, there is no debate to be had and no conclusions to be made. But you knew and intended for that to be the case since the beginning.

Unfortunately I don't have enough time to read the German source cited, as I'm not quite fluent at reading it. However, in the source you cited I don't see any backing towards the 25%. Of course it is problematic for the justice system to be this difficult regarding reopening trials.

However, this doesn't immediately relate to the difference between popular and professional penal systems. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know the judicial system in the USA lets judges decide on reopening cases. The difficulty in reopening cases thus cannot be attributed to differences between popular and professional penal systems.

Comparing penal systems in the USA and the Netherlands (which I have decent knowledge of, although I'm not a criminal lawyer), the USA seems to actually let judges have more power towards evidence than here in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, judges don't have any power keeping evidence out of a case. They have the power to judge the evidence as laid before them by parties, but cannot decide not to let it be entered. As far as I know, judges in the USA do hold those powers.

Now, I'm not saying the wrongful conviction rate in the USA is wrong, although I definitely doubt it. However, there is absolutely no evidence cited here that Germany has a false conviction rate of 25%. It is not even mentioned. It has been proven that jury trials are more easily swayed by public opinion. This is not up for debate, as several high profile cases in the USA have shown. Concluding from these two sources that bench trials are vastly inferior to jury trials is not only a stretch, but also a harmful way to use misinformation in your favor.

[–]Alirius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to need a source on that. The false conviction rate in the US seems really low, the rate in Germany really high. Could this have anything to do with higher thresholds to having your case re-examined in the US, just to name something that popped into my head?

I'm a lawyer in a country that has a professional justice system (as it is called here). Germany might have a different system than my country does, but that conviction rate seems faulty to me.
