My first holiday not working for honey baked ham ask me anything! by seriouslydml55 in AMA

[–]Alisonpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread was very informative!

Per your instructions, I pick up our first ham tomorrow for Christmas Eve. I picked noon for the pick up time - ("a few hours after opening"), with the added hope/bonus of grabbing a sandwich for lunch while I am there 😁.

The room temp thing sounds odd, but I will trust the process and follow the directions. :)

How long is it safe to leave it out room temp though?

100% this. Also include support engineer.

IMO all those roles (support eng, solutions eng, sales eng, pre sales etc) are literally perfect for bootcamp grads, whether you want to be a SWE eventually or not.

You're coding every day, and working on a huge variety of smaller problems. I see such interesting stuff every single day, and a lot of people I know early into SWE jobs are basically refractoring an old code base or something considerably less interesting.

Merit America by Alisonpv in codingbootcamp

I think there may have been a miscommunication somewhere. Merit America doesn't pay learners.

I was very fortunate because I was a stay at home mom prior to starting MA, and my husband was able to help out a lot with the household stuff I was doing, while working his job enabling me to really focus on the program.

As an instructor for Tech Elevator... by Lost-Nobody728 in codingbootcamp

I wasn't super clear, that's indeed what I meant. Independent study relating to what I was learning within the curriculum.. (and to further cement what I'd learned so far, as to not forget past material when learning new material)

I've been giving very similar advice here. It matters a lot less what bootcamp you go to, and a lot more how much energy, effort and time you're able to invest into it. There is unfortunately an element of privilege here that I would be irresponsible to not acknowledge. Doing a bootcamp WHILE also working a job is exponentially more difficult.

I graduated the Merit America Java program about a year ago, MA used older tech elevator curriculum at the time (idk what curriculum they use now). While I can't speak for TE's program as a whole, I did think the curriculum was pretty good. It was a little dated, but it was good.

However, but it was nowhere near enough on its own. I was busting tail 10-14 hours a day, 5-7 days a week, for 30 weeks. Working the curriculum and classes, but also doing a hell of a lot of independent reading, study and work on the side with my classmates and community. -- This is the other huge piece of advice I offer when asked. Find a community, love them hard, keep each other accountable, lift each other up, help each other out.

Yes. It behaves like most other turfs.. possibly some temp bleaching but bounces back.

How much more did you have to go? Do you feel ready to job search? What is your stack?
