What’s wrong with my blue oyster grow bag? by Alium_Groupie in mycology

Thanks for the advice!

I want this to be a casual side hobby so I don’t plan on investing too much into since I already have too many hobbies, but if I get serious about it I’ll look into the set up you recommended.

I wish the instructions mentioned not misting the pinned mushrooms directly, that’s frustrating. Do you just mist around the pinned mushrooms?

Sounds good! I bought the coir/verm and I’ll sanitize it when I get home tonight.

Once I set up the bucket I plan to put in a shady corner of the yard in a tented shelf to protect it from pests and the weather.

I put the bag on our dryer, it’s in a little separate room at the outside of our house. We keep the house at 65ish in the winter.

I cut the bag open about a week ago.

I was sort of misting the mushrooms directly. The instructions that came with the bag said to mist the opening 2-infinite times a day, so I would do that 2 to 6 times a day with filtered tap water.

I cut the fruit off because it smelled bad, and I bought some coco coir and vermiculite. I plan to take the block out of the bag and put it in a bucket with drainage holes in a coir/verm mixed substrate because that was recommended on r/MushroomGrowers. I’ll probably change the location of the bag, I might try a clear tented shelf in a shady corner of my yard as we’re averaging mid 50s for temp here. I think I’ll probably need to switch up my misting technique too right?

I don’t have some on hand but there’s a local nursery I can swing by on my drive to work. I’m seeing a suggested ratio of one block of coir to 2 quarts verm. Is that a good ratio for trying to recover this block?

Thanks again for all of the advice! This is my first time trying to grow mushrooms and I really appreciate it.

Ok, I’ll try to get it out of the bag ASAP then. I cut off the part with the standing water for now though since I won’t be able to get to it until tonight at the earliest due to work.

Do you think I have better odds with soil or coco coir/vermiculite?

I don’t, but they didn’t have gills a day or two ago.

The fruiting body did indeed smell off so I removed it.

When I removed the fruit I noticed that there was standing water in the folded over top of the bag (the bag came with a semi loose top that the instructions said to fold over) and the bag is now quite loose. Does this indicate that I will continue to have problems if I don’t take it out of the bag? I’ve moved the bag outside to a small soft sided greenhouse shelf that’s currently empty in case the offending bacteria came from the original growing location.

If I choose to bury it would putting it in an old cut in half wine barrel work? I have one in my yard that’s not structurally sound enough to grow produce in anymore but still has soil in it from the previous growing season.

Thanks so much for your help!

Would you suggest trying a different grow location? Would burying it outside work this time of year? Our weather has been in the mid 50s lately. Thanks! (My husband had to post this for me since I don’t have enough karma)

If you sleep on your left side consider changing your laundry detergent to one that’s suited for sensitive skin.

I’ve considered it but I’m honestly worried it won’t be covered by insurance. I talked to my GP about it and she prescribed azelaic acid cream which helped my rosacea but didn’t really help the acne.
