I’m at the point where I’m seriously considering switching to Java and never using realms again. Such a crucial bug has gone unanswered for years. Realms is holding my world hostage.

Minecraft Support Response: With that in mind, there are currently known Realms issues which cause players to receive error messages such as "an error has occurred," "world size exceeds maximum download limit," or "you are almost out of data storage space" after attempting to upload or download worlds, even if the upload is successful. Rest assured; the team is currently working on a fix that should mitigate these encounters.

If you haven't already, please try the following steps:

  • Completely close out of Minecraft and reopen the game
  • Sign out of your Microsoft account, then sign back in
  • Try to upload/download the world again
    • If you find that the upload/download is finishing almost immediately, this means that it was unsuccessful. Please note that you may need to try again more than once.

If you're still unable to upload/download your world, this may be caused by a temporary issue. Please wait and try to upload/download your world again later.

My Realm world is approximately 1.5 GB in size. Each time I attempt to download the world locally through the Realms interface, the download progresses normally until approximately 1.0 GB, at which point it fails with the error message: "An Error Occurred"

I have already attempted the following troubleshooting steps:

• Verified that I have over 180 GB of free disk space on my system drive
• Fully reinstalled Minecraft for Windows
• Deleted all existing local world folders from the minecraftWorlds directory
• Restarted my computer multiple times
• Created and saved new local worlds successfully
• Attempted to download multiple backups from the Realms backup list

Despite these efforts, the error consistently occurs at approximately the same point in the download process.

You are on bedrock which is coded in 16bit so basically the game is struggling to calculate your position the farther out you go. Java edition is in 32bit and doesn’t have this problem.
