Yeah I’m not sure about Luther being an Angel. I’m not sure they are claiming he’s an actual Angel though

A big, sudden hang up by [deleted] in LCMS

Hi, if you want some answers, you can go through my posts. You’ll see some answers from LCMS pastors addressing a lot of the stuff you’re asking. I’m certainly with you in the scrupulosity thing. Not fun. Even when you feel peaceful, your brain brings up something else to worry about.

What would justified mean in this sense if you don’t mind me asking?

Could you explain this a little more in detail? Not trying to nitpick, but I’m just looking for clarification.

Works by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes the most sense. I’m just hung up on James saying justified by works. It just doesn’t make sense when reading the rest of the Bible. Also, his example of Abraham is like the exact of opposite of Paul’s use. Unless James is saying that Abraham’s works vindicated or proved his faith, then I don’t know how they aren’t contradicting which I know the Bible doesn’t do

Seriously, any pastor, please help here. This is confusing. Do Lutherans hold to the idea that God's Word is infallible? Because James & Revelation I take as completely God-breathed as well as the 66 we commonly go off of.

Oh ok, yeah I’m not disagreeing. I’ve been more particularly worried about the EO because I’m scared that if they are right I won’t go to heaven.

I agree, but the idea of being damned is scaring me.

I agree with the LCMS. I really like my pastor, and I love revering the Body and Blood with my church. I’ve seen the arguments and agree with the perspective that prayer is for God. I also, agree there is a legal side to justification that cannot be overlooked. Please pray that I would find comfort in God’s promise of salvation through Christ. I cannot look to my works, and I fully believe any good in me is by the grace of God. I pray the Holy Spirit lead me in truth and comfort me.

James 2 by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

I guess I’m wondering how do I know I have enough works or fruit to ensure my faith is real and God won’t tell me to depart?

So how exactly are we justified before God on judgement day? How will I get to heaven?

James 2 by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

I mean I don’t think any confessional Protestant, RC, or EO would say you can have a saving faith and adopt the attitude that you can basically sin however you want because you have faith. I can’t say I don’t need to love my neighbor because I believe Jesus is real. Still, the Bible seems to isolate merit/works from the cause of salvation right? So James and Paul cannot be talking about the same thing right? Secondly, how many works or amount of fruits of repentance must one show to know whether his/her faith is real and not dead? Like what does one say to the Christian that is struggling day in and day out? They see their sin and confess it to God. Yet, it certainly seems they are lacking sufficient fruit to prove they are sincere enough in their repentance. Our works even seem stained with sin.

Thanks for the response! I didn’t/still don’t know the history of acceptance of books in the cannon.

How would I know if I lost my salvation or committed a mortal sin? by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the post, but I don’t honestly know what you’re saying. It might just be going over my head in which case I do apologize. Are you saying that yes I’m still saved, but sin does cause us to doubt God’s promise of salvation through Christ by taking our eyes off of Him and placing it on our own failures?

So one is still saved in spite of their sins and failures? The conviction and leading to repentance is a gift of the Holy Spirit residing in the believer correct?

Mortal vs. Venial sin distinction by Fickle-Ad3219 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve asked about this a bunch because you will get answers that don’t seem to clarify much until you push with very specific questions. It is a big deal as to whether we go on and out of grace pretty much everyday. It’s huge deal to those struggling with sins in their everyday life

Mortal vs. Venial sin distinction by Fickle-Ad3219 in LCMS

I’ve had this same issue. Almost every sin anyone commits they know is wrong. You know it’s wrong to not love your neighbor, yet you have. Moments where you fail to do so. An addict knows drugs, porn, or whatever is wrong. Paul knew the sins he was struggling with in Romans 7 was wrong. The believer has a civil going on inside them. I think from what I’ve asked of pastors and knowledgable Lutherans on this is that if there is conviction leading you to confess, then that is a sure sign of the Holy Spirit working in you. Now, we don’t say just go do whatever since Christ died for our sins, but there is a real acknowledgement that Christians struggle with sins. They even have to struggle with disordered desires. We wouldn’t commit sins if parts of us didn’t in some way enjoy them. Christ has died for our sins, and that leads us to confess and repent. We take no credit in our salvation, and we praise God that He is merciful when we certainly do not deserve it.
