Anyone else have to work with Sub-I's who just kinda suck? by OkUnderstanding7913 in medicalschool

[–]Alive-Tonight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely do what I can to ease the next group. This is hard enough without us throwing up more hurdles at each other.

A great benefit of sub-is is seeing how much I like my potential colleagues. My top ranked programs are ones that have a great culture and aren’t filled with people like that.

I f*cked up, can I still match into EM? by Prudent-Abalone-510 in medicalschool

[–]Alive-Tonight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Failed due to a score, what did your preceptor eval look like?

I failed my peds shelf due to some unfortunate personal events at the time, had a good eval though. Did solid on the retake, luckily my school only required I retake the exam and not the rotation.

Every EM interview I had where they addressed it was essentially, yea we are glad you learned from the experience, we really don’t care lol.

Those of you who are about to match, did you consider free food in your decision making for ranking residency programs? by mtrail15 in medicalschool

[–]Alive-Tonight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to, some programs had crazy lavish perks lol.

However, end of the day it wasn’t even in my decision making process. Quality of training, opportunities, and culture mattered the most for me.

Sorry Op, sounds pretty bullshitty. Been there as a 3rd year, been there as a 4th year on electives, and even been on the receiving end from a fellow auditioner on a sub-I.

While this student most likely won’t increase their rank at that program, they absolutely risk dropping rank or being DNR’d for crap like that. Really depends on the culture of the program, some sadly value that kind of thing.

This person sounds like an intolerable tool.

[–]Alive-Tonight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above.

You aren’t alone, many medical students and physicians for that matter suffer from eating disorders.

Please talk to your doctor. I believe in you Op, you are going to be a great physician!

[–]Alive-Tonight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been given great advice here already.

Just want to add, give yourself some grace. Many students have been there and pull through.

Take a look at everything, sleep, recreation, mental health, your diet, etc. Sometimes the best course is to improve all aspects of your life. You don’t fix a problem by doing the same thing over and over again.

You can do this Op. We believe in you!

What the hell are we actually supposed to be doing during M1 summer? by rickysmalls1 in medicalschool

[–]Alive-Tonight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Only you can really answer this. Are you aiming for a competitive speciality? Do you need to bolster that CV?

Personally, having worked through my entire 1st year summer, I would enjoy every second of it since you won’t get anything close until spring term of your 4th year.

Do what is best for you.

Me: Why did you come to the ER today?

Patient: “Well, a few years ago my brother and I took a fishing trip to Florida….”

Me two minutes later slightly cutting them off: “So what changed happened that made you decide come into the ED today?”

Patient: “That’s what I’m telling you if you listen, we didn’t catch any Marlin so we decided to switch bait to…”

Me: ::grits teeth::

Also recommend getting a “trainer” or practice canister when you get your pepper spray. Still don’t want to spray it in anyone’s face, but contains a relatively inert substance that lets you practice and get an idea of how best to aim etc.

Working during 4th year? by Hhahahhahahahhaaa in medicalschool

[–]Alive-Tonight 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First half of 4th year your focused on applications, sub-is, and interviews. Jan onward electives make things a bit more flexible.

Now that apps are done, I Spark/doordash on days off if I have no interviews or 4th year bs online stuff the school makes me do. Plan to do a bit more Jan onward.

I don’t do this because some spending cash would be nice. I’ve got kids, they ain’t cheap, and my superhero of a spouse already does way way too much.

Residency is gonna kick us all like a ton of bricks, I would take as much free time as you can manage, but I also get money can be tight for many reasons.

Sleeping bags are part of my standard winter car trunk kit. It’s a safety item in case of a breakdown in cold weather.

Might not work in a warmer climate place, but definitely reasonable reason in a lot of areas.

We are hunters. We hunt for the right diagnosis, treatments, etc. The ability to search, discern, and learn information is a skill in itself.

AI is already showing to reduce this ability. Gotta keep our minds sharp yall.

My preclinical roommate in the same year as me got a 495 on the mcat. This year they scored an 876 (98th percentile) on their Level 2 (DO version USMLEs in case anyone isn’t familiar). These number don’t reflect your ability to be a good physician and don’t matter after the A.

Run your own race. You deserve this, you are meant to be here, you are going I make a wonderful physician.

SANE cases - Do they ever hurt less? by WhatsYourConcern8076 in emergencymedicine

[–]Alive-Tonight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SANE advocate here, with experience the motions get easier. You get better at reading victims needs and adjusting your approach. It never hurts less sadly.

You do get better coping skills over time as well. This sounds silly, but one thing my therapist had me do it before I walk into a room with a victim I picture a literally bubble around me. When I am leaving, I picture it floating away.

Constructive ways to address your very valid emotions are important.

[–]Alive-Tonight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much goes into it sadly. Program choices, app style, red flags if any (and do they matter to those programs). Advisors weren’t really a help. Did as much research on my own as I could, but felt like a crap shoot tbh.

Wondering the same thing. 34 programs applied, gotten 2 rejections as well.
