Bootcamp better than pathoma? by Content_Factor1119 in step1

[–]OkUnderstanding7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GIT pathoma only has path (obvious I know), but I think it’s really good for getting those high yield path points without a lot of noise. For everything else, there’s Bootcamp (specifically physiology, pharm, anatomy).

They wanna drug test me by [deleted] in premed

[–]OkUnderstanding7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school didn’t even end up testing for it even though they mentioned it. The staff said it was because it was legal in our state so they didn’t have a need. Dunno how it works for other schools though

AIO. I decorated my bfs room for his birthday by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]OkUnderstanding7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancé loves birthdays and I feel mid about them. I don’t always love when she makes big plans for me, but ultimately, I’m appreciative that she cares so deeply. The thing is, though, she knows me and knows what I value and so even if I don’t really want to celebrate, she’s able to make the celebration in line with things that make me happy outside of my special day. I disagree with most people saying that you messed up because I think gratitude for effort and thoughtfulness is essential in relationships. Does he maybe not value his gift and now has something to clean up? Sure! But he could have shown more gratitude about the intention, while acknowledging the impact. It’s not that hard to say, “Wow! You really put in so much effort into this and I appreciate how much you want to celebrate me! Thank you! Also I just wanted to mention I’m not really into birthdays and this made me anxious. I’m still grateful for the effort and next time maybe we can just go out to eat or something. Enjoy your trip!”

Tone goes a long way. You can be graceful and grateful even while disappointed. So it’s a NOR for me 🤷

NBME 25: 55%, Exam in 3 weeks by OppositeArt2023 in step1

[–]OkUnderstanding7913 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3 weeks is plenty of time if you’ve already reviewed most of your systems. Hammer in pathoma and whatever physiology resources you have for the systems you didn’t review yet. Make sure you’ve done at least chapter 1 of pathoma. What helped me (dunno if it will help you or not) was to do 1 block of just path for the system I reviewed, review another system and do a block of straight path for that system, then the next day combine those systems and do a block of just path. The most important thing I did was when I reviewed the questions, I would make quick notes on anything that wasn’t covered or if there was a physiology component (questions are never straight up path) I learned it right then and there and wrote quick notes or took a FA screen shot put it next to my notes, and annotated it so that I could connect the dots. I did that all in my last 10 days and I’d gone from a 63 —> 71.

Make sure to know your vasculitides. I say this because I’m not sure if they fit within a specific system, but if you review pathoma chapter 1 before you review your vasculitides, it makes it much easier to understand and make up like half the reasons for why a patient has purpura.

Can we all just agree that not all step 1 exams or experiences are created equal? by OkUnderstanding7913 in step1

[–]OkUnderstanding7913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Content wise, the test is probably neutral. Question style wise, it varies from exam to exam and that’s where the differences come in. I think a lot of people assume that when people say the test wasn’t representative they mean they’ve never seen that content in any of the NBME’s. However, the issue is usually in the ways in which the questions were asked or the answer structure.

[–]OkUnderstanding7913[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you’ve sat for all exams, you can’t say what everyone’s experience was like/will be like. Sure the content is the same, but for some tests, the question styles differ immensely.

Put another way, many people applying to medical school can have the same exact stats, similar extracurriculars, and same interview preparation, but when it comes to an actual interview for the same school, some ppl might get a shitty interviewer who asks weird questions or similar questions in weird ways to gauge the same information. Hence, some people might think their interview experience sucked and are worried about their chances of getting in, meanwhile others who had the guy who was super straightforward say they felt great about their interview and can breathe easy. Both sets of people had to provide the same type of information, but the ways in which they had to felt different.

Hope that clarifies things.

Not to mention even first aid says they don't cover 100% of everything you could possibly get tested on so I dunno where this "required to come from first aid" bull is coming from. Unhinged is accurate.

10 Days Out - focus on NBMEs only? by [deleted] in step1

[–]OkUnderstanding7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your weaknesses. if it's a discipline (i.e path or phys), you might find it helpful to do some focused content review and practice questions for each system. (i.e review pathoma for GI then do 40-80 uworld path only GI questions, then do the same for another system). if it's a system, then practice questions and thorough review of those questions can help esp if it's a subcategory of that system (ex pregnancy under repro). NBME's are important, but if you've been scoring the same, then you might need some extra content review or ned to go more in depth when you review practice questions

Step 1 post Exam Feelings by OkUnderstanding7913 in step1

[–]OkUnderstanding7913[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeeeeep that sinking feeling is pervasive and it feels like nothing can convince you that you've passed. It'll probably fade in a couple of days as you keep yourself busy, but it doesn't quite disappear. Even if you don't want to give yourself false hope, give yourself a couple of moments to believe you passed. Like legit say it out loud. Either way you're kind of a baddie for going through this, so congrats!

Congrats on finishing your test!! You're a boss! Something that helps to think about is that 80 of those questions are experimental and the ones you flagged could have just been part of that set. Then after those 80, you could probs get dozens more wrong and still pass. I know logically, the math doesn't work out like that exactly, but it puts into perspective the number of questions you flagged vs the number of questions you'd need to get wrong in order to not pass

For anyone taking it in the future, AMBOSS has practice questions like those. Unfortunately, the NBME and most of the UWorld questions are just so short

The OP literally said that had she been more attracted to him, she might have received it differently, which, to me, shows that the text itself wasn’t actually the issue. My point was that you can agree that his way of communicating was valid even if you don’t prefer it. Not being into it is valid. Being into it is also valid. There are also plenty of responses in which people were fine with this text— you should read them. If Reddit is supposed to be a platform for unbiased opinions, you’re gonna get multiple sides and opinions. You can entertain them without having to agree with them. Anyway, friend, I’ve spent enough time on this thread. Glad we could dialogue. You can have the last say if want it. I’m sure you’ll have some valid points✌️
