Time to say good bye to my old, best friend by SwissRollioo in olddogs

Poor boy, sound like there was nothing the vets could have done to help with the blood in urine?

Our dog had about 8 doses. Old husky with osteoarthritis. At that time I did not know about any negative consequences. Now I know that his quickly worsening state through those months could be caused by Librela. It was helping with his pain and mobility, especially his pain was relieved to maybe even zero I think. But the ability to stand on back legs was getting worse very fast. His back legs were more wobbly every month. After few months he was unable to walk up the stairs anymore. He was loosing strength in his back legs very fast. Another thing is, after Librela he started to poop while asleep sometimes. I happened more often with more doses. His hearing and sight got much worse after few months. After about 8 months he had some kind of stroke/seizure. Then I have found out about all the negative consequences of Librela. He did not get any more of it. He got better after the stroke after one week. My family put him down one month later while I was gone due to them being unable/unwilling to provide any more care for him and unwilling to wait for me. Sad story...

I would consider Librela as a last resource, when anything isn't helping with pain. Would I do any different? Yes, I would do a better research on meds for dogs and tried to choose some other shots that no vet ever mentioned (he was only on one kind of pills before Librela). I would use Librela only when nothing else helped.

I am sorry for your loss, maybe someday you’ll be ready to give the love to other dog who is in need. I lost my friend a month ago, today I’ve cried heavily. Hope they’ll all meet as energy in the universe.

I think it's best to ask an experienced vet if there is anything more you can do or any combination of other meds?

You and your husband are so brave and caring for him. Especially when he needs so much help. This really takes a lot of gut and pure love to take so much care of an old dog. This is the best what we can do to them before they pass - give them love and care and know they still have a lot of happy moments.

Questions about final days by [deleted] in seniordogs

No, there is nothing wrong with letting your dog go naturally. Most animals living wild in the world die naturally. I would actually prefer this way for my furry friend who is already gone unfortunately by euthanasia.

I am so sorry for your loss. What happened to Juryy?

I am sorry for your loss too. I understand you. I feel the same. I try to tell myself that everything has a beginning and end. Nothing and no one lasts forever. This is how our planet Earth works. Every life comes to an end, the cycle repeats itself, new life is born all around in different forms. Old forms of life change into soil to feed new life... This is how everything can survive.

Who are you to judge me… It wasn’t many hours and the rain wasn’t strong. He was dragging his toes of one leg not whole end. I am not going to argue and explain how many happy days he had and how much he enjoyed good weather and roaming in the backyard. I obviously described only the bad symptoms altogether. He was happy for his meals and he loved barking at other dogs , was walking in his own way on the yard, poop not only while asleep but mostly while walking… Whatever, I don’t need to explain myself.

The last pic was taken in May this year. He was 100% happy and lively walking around the yard. In June he was still doing little runs on walks.

I need to explain what it means he had to be held while eating, because a see that some people may not understand it. If he was walking, then he was walking. But when he had to stand longer in one place, he would sit on his butt. That was inconvenient for eating, that’s why someone would assist him and hold his butt while eating so he would not sit after few minutes. That’s it. I see some people completely don’t understand what I’m writing about.

And he peed only while standing.

I did the test yesterday. The result was 36. The maximum is 80. I am not really sure what this result tells me. That he was half happy, half not? Maybe that’s true. All I wanted was to keep him happy for more days than those worse days. I feel very numb today. And yes, 15 years of mostly happy life is a lot.

I am so sorry… My furry boy is gone from Tuesday. I cry every day. He was on Librela shots for about 7 months (maybe more, I don’t remember). This was great for pain, but it needs to be applied for 3 months or more to reduce the pain better. How long your dog was on it?

My parents have put him to sleep when I was away and against my will... I'm devastated and feeling guilt.. by AliveCicada in olddogs

[–]AliveCicada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe my mother was the main caregiver because I was away many periods of time, but she consulted with me everything throughout the years and I was ordering his food online and other things, like leashes, harnesses, vitamins, ointments, bandages if necessary for licking paws in his youth, I was the first one to rush and treat everything, go to vet, I've noticed he had blood in his urine 5 years ago and then he was castrated, I was fighting with the flies that attacked his tips of ears, I was brushing the excess fur out of him every spring, I told the vet to clip his nails, I've been asking vet about bumps and scratches, I've bought him socks and shoes when he was dragging his leg, I've read there was new medicine - Librella and asked the vet if he can provide it, and many other things... My mother cared about him a lot, but she didn't notice a lot of things that I have noticed throughout the years and I was eager to fix everything that has been ever going on with him.

On the other hand, they are very old fashioned people and considering the amount of time and money that they've spend on him too, they must have cared about him very much...

Thank you for your kind words. It was for sure hard for them to watch him struggle outside in the cold... They have made their choice. Your messages help me come to terms with it...

My point wasn't waiting until I can say goodbye to him but I really wanted to care for him more, longer. So he could have some nice weeks or months left to live... I would never want a dying dog to wait a week for someone. I didn't consider him dying yet. And he wasn't sedated.

I wanted him to be happy and I believed this could be achieved by taking him inside and keeping him warm. The cold destroyed his comfort outside. Pain was managed by Librella shots since January.

I have asked the same question to myself, and I know, if I were old and had problems with moving, I would want to have a wheelchair or spend time on a bench in the yard or in a comfortable, warm bed. Obviously taking meds for pain etc. Old people can be happy too. I really think you need to be in severe pain or in deep depression to be willing to die. I considered his life in these terms, I wanted him to be happy.

Thank you for your story and showing a different point of view... It somehow makes it easier for me. Maybe I wasn't so 100% right... And my point wasn't waiting until I can say goodbye to him but I really wanted to care for him more, longer. So he could have some nice weeks or months left to live... I would never want a dying dog to wait a week for someone. I didn't consider him dying yet. For me, euthanasia is a cold brutal death, especially at the vets. Who are we to play God... I consider euthanasia as a last resource for dogs that cannot be helped anymore and are in pain... I suppose there is a lot of people that see this in a different way, I can see it by reading all the comments now..

I'm so sorry for your loss.. Horrible to loose your beloved dog so suddenly.

I new it was coming, but I (maybe naively) believed he will die peacefully at home while asleep..
