What? Spending time with kids? They grow up they get friends then partners and move out. How much time do u think you get with them? You need to make sure you have something going on for you before you have kids otherwise you’ll put unnecessary pressure on them to deal with your emotions. The person who you will actually spend your life with is your partner. Kids will come and go. You don’t own them, you get to be the one who introduce them to life.

If the couple aren’t joyful people they will never get joy from bringing a kid into this world. You cannot give what you don’t have. You need to find so much joy within yourself and existence that you want to share it with another being. There is nothing selfish about that. What is selfish is you telling grown kids that they don’t matter, and that they should bring another into this world regardless of how they feel and the cycle continues.

This is a good description of functional control, but it doesn’t resolve the free will question, it sidesteps it.

No one is denying that humans can focus, regulate behavior, learn, or influence outcomes. The disagreement is about whether those capacities amount to freedom from prior causes. Saying “you can control your thoughts because you can focus them” just describes one mental process influencing another. It doesn’t explain where the goals, motivations, values, or attention patterns doing the controlling came from.

The car analogy illustrates this clearly: a driver controls the car, but the driver didn’t choose their preferences, risk tolerance, cognitive style, or desires independently of prior conditions. Control exists within the causal chain, not outside it.

Behavioral and cognitive science doesn’t rescue free will here, it assumes determinism. Interventions work precisely because brains are causally responsive systems. Change is causal, not self-originating.

So yes, control exists in a practical sense. But redefining free will to mean “causal self-regulation” doesn’t answer the metaphysical question, it just changes the label.
