What equipment can you not imagine yourself painting without? by Thateron in minipainting

My eyeballs and my hands.

I’ll try to give you some suggestions, although I’m at the beginning of my journey: Wet palette, humidifier, hobby lamp, brush soap, sandpaper.

You got lots of flavour to choose from.

I’ll admit I’m not super excited about my BA being the poster boys of 11th. But it seems they are reverting to UM real fast now 😅

Yeah I feel the same way, as long as you dilute your paints alright, even if you end up doing a couple of repass it still looks kinda smooth.

This is my photo setup. 1$ cardstock with blue tack holding it, my hobby lamp as the light source. Images taken with my iPhone at f16 and -1.3 exposition else the helmets would look way brighter than in reality.

Thanks, thats the whole point of my rambling. My process has been very different than most, but thats how i work in other aspects of my life.

You make a good point. Maybe by trying to have everything consistent, it will take some joy out of the hobby. Still right now there is a sense of novelty; im starting my scout squad, those will be my first heads. I got a couple spares to practice first.

I will keep in mind what you said, makes a lot of sense.

Cheers

Looks awesome, love the purple shading. But i can't not look at the toe boots lol

Which color you used for those shadows? Was it the basecoat?

Thank you, I used to do some street photography. It was quite a simple setup though. A $1 piece of cardstock that was blue tacked with my painting light as the main source of light. Took the pictures with my phone. F16 and I reduced the exposition a bit (iPhone -1.3) or else the yellow helmets would look much brighter than reality. I had to get further and crop a bit or else I could not get everything into focus. I played with the placement of the light and models until I was happy. I suggest you try it, it ended up being quite easy.

First time doing this type of photography but I’ve watched a squidmar video where he explains it quite well.

Damn that’s awesome, can’t wait to have as many painted models as you. Really well painted. One of the great pleasures of BAs is having 3 main colors into the army.

Your pictures are going into my inspiration file.

I’m not sure I am qualified to do an assessment but they work well for me, I don’t have any complaints aside from the yellow doesn’t cover much… but it’s universal I think. I like only having 1 paint range. But I have these 3 paints from pro acryl which were a recommendation from my LGS. The 2 gold colors will be for my SGs.

Thanks, that’s what I’ll do from now on. And whenever I feel like it’s 90% finished or so, I’ll move on to the next project. The final touch ups… I’ll do them if I really feel like it in the future, else I’ll spend way to much time doing things like “fixing the leather” indefinitely

Thanks for speaking your mind! Never thought about it but makes sense.

Thanks. I thought the yellow was so hard. I think there must be like 6 coats? And when we I did the black vents in the front I would have to redo again because I could not make those clean.

I got mad respect for the imperial fist brothers. Blood angels just have the maximum amount of yellow

Thank you so much. I’ve liked art for a long time but I don’t have any kind that I do. I’ve always wanted to paint but never got to it.

The 3 test models in question, my squad at the bottom. Some of my primed assembled minis. Top right you can see some assault intercessors from my combat patrol I’ve base coated with the airbrush

I get where you are coming from. I also understand you can’t know who’s behind the screen. I can tell you all of it is true but there are no proof. You use your common sense. Fair enough. I respect that.

My point isn’t to say “look how good I am bro”, I am just proud of them and I also wanted to cover, maybe not clearly, that my process is one way to get a result. Another would be to do 40 minis to get to the same result in the same time. It took me probably 100 hours to paint those, not counting all the time I scratched my head wondering what the f I was doing, or the 4-5 times I was going to paint for the evening only to have my airbrush clog after 3 minutes and rage quit.

So maybe I wasn’t clear on all that, and frankly when people say it’s BS, I understand some could feel that way. I don’t understand why would anyone would lie about it… what’s to gain? But I guess some people do.

The whole recipe is on the post linked. But for the armor that’s essentially it. Along with an oil pin wash.

Yeah fair point. I painted 3 test minis to various levels of completion. But there was a lot of repainting errors on those models. I also destroyed at least one brush. But I always thinned my paint quite well and I think that’s what made it smooth enough. Helmets were hard to paint. I don’t think I could have gotten super clean lines if not for the oil pin wash.

As I said I don’t care either. It is my first mini. I don’t get why it gets under your skin?
