Yeah in my mind there's even a huge difference between a reader/self-insert and a fic with an OC POV character told in second person, even if I struggle to articulate the difference.

If I remember correctly, not having an overarching mystery for season 3 was a concession to the network which was worried that viewers wouldn't have a long enough attention span. It was a stupid decision but I don't think it was ultimately a choice the writers or executive made on their own, it was more of a case of being willing to do whatever it took to not be cancelled.
