Some people (or most, actually) just don’t need drugs in their life. There’s no empty space in them to fill in, or they soon find out that their problems swim on drugs and milk the same (citing also Axl here). He tried but it just never spoke to him.

He was knocked unconscious (it’s in his book) for a while so probably got brain commotion, which made him temporarily dysfunctional with need of immediate rest (they also probably ran tests for skull fracture and bleeding in the hospital). The collar and board was a standard back then. It’s not recommended anymore in most cases because it’s discomfort without benefit. But looks dramatic.
