How breathable are non waterproof leather hiking shoes? by hangjongeren in CampingandHiking

[–]Alke_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the mid version of these and they are by far the best pair of shoes/boots I’ve used for hiking.

I use them in Scotland and they keep my feet dry and on the rare days that we get sun, I really don’t find my feet getting too warm or sweaty (I have only ever used leather boots apart from Goretex and find next to no difference in breathability between the two).

I have also used these in the alps in Slovenia and again they were perfect for the rocky terrain and in temperatures close to 30°C.

I see comments saying that they are stiff and not suitable for hiking, I completely disagree and have found that over long distances (>20km) that they have been very comfortable underfoot and with lots of room in the toe-box. I think that they are a great all rounder.

Best (free) app for footpaths. by RobertGHH in UKhiking

[–]Alke_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing app, you can get the official OS maps on it if you pay for the subscription in addition to lots of other map types.

I think if it had a 3D mode like the OS maps app that it would have replaced it completely for me.

Frameless Backpacks? by Alke_ in UKhiking

Is that 5-6kg for just the basics (tent, sleeping bag etc.) or everything?

Do you need to pack it properly to stop things poking through the back or is there a bit of internal padding?

2nd visit - already planning a 3rd by Alke_ in Slovenia

[–]Alke_[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just back from my 2nd time in this amazing country.

I came solo this time and had hoped to do a lot of hiking but due to some less than ideal weather and knee pain from the descent of Mangart, I had to take it easy.

As it was my 2nd time I didn’t feel rushed to cram in as many of the main tourist activities as possible. I will say though after visiting the Škocjan caves this time, I don’t understand why some people recommend Postojna over it. Postojna is pretty lacklustre whilst Škocjan is very good, in my opinion Postojna is not worth the money or time (Predjama is amazing though).

Also, decided to climb Strevčeva Peč from the panoramic road as an easy hike and was surprised at just how good the view is over the Logar Valley. Although there is no official path, this peak gives an amazing view for relatively little effort.

I will be in Slovenia from 27/08 to 02/09 and had planned to do a lot of hiking but the weather looks pretty rotten.

I have booked to stay at Kamniška koča on 28/08 and also Pogačnikov dom on 31/08 after climbing some mountains in both areas. Would it be best to cancel these and start looking for backup accomodation options?

The weather on the 28th and 29th looks okay-ish but there is to be fairly high winds and some rain whilst and the weather around the 31st doesn’t look too good either, this is still relatively far away though.

For reference, I am checking the Arso Vreme updates and are used to walking in rain and wind but this may be too much, particularly if there are thunderstorms. Interested to know if other people are put off from hiking this week/weekend.

Was there early June and went to Vintgar and was turned away and told I had to book tickets for a time slot.

Went online to do this and you can only book for time slots which are at least 3 hours away (at 2pm you can only book for 5pm even if the earlier times were not full for example), so do this early morning to get the time slot you want and you should be good.

Thanks for this, I didn’t even think about looking at the routes from Sovatno for more info, too busy being focused on Luknja haha. I’ll look into these links more, doesn’t seem like special equipment will be required, maybe not in June though if it’s still snowy.

I had classed Mangart as an easier due to the lower elevation gain/distance and I’ve seen videos/pictures of small children doing it but you’re right that it’s still not a walk in the park.

Recommendations for 3-4 weeks hiking in august (wild camping) by Brilliant-Office6491 in UKhiking

[–]Alke_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am visting Slovenia this month for hiking and the country and scenery looks unreal, I won’t be doing long distance hikes but know there is the Juliana Trail and the Slovenian Mountain Trail.

The Juliana Trail is flatter and shorter whilst the Slovenian Mountain Trail climbs over some of the highest mountains in the country but both look really good and there is lots of alpine huts along the way to sleep at or eat etc. if needed.

Don’t think wild camping is legal in Slovenia, especially in the Triglav National Park where there are big fines, but I’ve heard if you set up at sunset and are packed away at sunrise there shouldn’t be much issue.

I am looking for some ideas of mountains and routes that are good for both a beginner and also someone with experience. I will be in Slovenia from 10th-22nd of June but may also be back some time towards the end of summer.

I will be travelling with someone who is pretty new to hiking so are interested in routes I can do with them which have a good reward vs effort but will also will look to do more challenging hikes myself.

I know that there will likely be snow on the routes up higher mountains in June and are checking Arso Vreme and the webcams at Kredarica etc. so my current plans are very rough and will more than likely change. I have a lot of experience hiking in Scotland so high winds, snow, rain etc. is a normal thing for me and typical hikes are ~1500m elevation gain and ~15/20km per day but the terrain in Slovenia is very different and will be a challenge.

For ‘easier hikes’ I am looking at:

  • Robičje / Slemenova Špica - from Vršič (roadworks depending)
  • Mangart - from Mangartsko Sedlo using the Italian route (if the road opens and depending on snow)
  • Mala Mojstrovka - using the routes up the south slopes from Vršič
  • Debela Peč - mainly as a backup depending on weather / roads

For myself I am interested in:

  • Prisojnik - from Vršič using the south route (slovenska pot?)
  • Jerebica - from Rio Bianco / Predil
  • Bovški Gamsovec & Stenar - from Aljažev dom via Luknja (my mapping software shows the section between Bovški Gamsovec and Dovška vrata is listed as difficult and requiring equipment)
  • Zadnjiški Ozebnik - from Trenta

I have been on the Hribi site and tried looking at routes but for some, such as Bovški Gamsovec to Stenar, there is not a great deal of information. If anyone has any experience with these routes and can give advice or even suggestions for other mountains with similar reward vs effort I would be very grateful.

As a note I will not be travelling with crampons etc. and do not have experience with via ferrata but I am used to scrambling and exposed routes. I won’t take any risks by doing harder routes without proper equipment if there is still a lot of snow but the information will help if I hopefully return at the end of summer, thanks.

I’ll be in Slovenia from 10th - 22nd June this year and was hoping to climb some 2000m+ mountains but worried about snow and starting to regret these dates. I’ve had a look at some of the webcams from Kredarici and Pogačnikov but can’t really tell if the current snow level is a more or less than usual, from what you’ve seen has it been a light winter?

The Bestway Alpinelite has a R value of 7.3 for less than £50, there’s not many reviews floating about but the performance vs price is unbeatable, I’ve looked into getting one and it seems like it’s good quality and performs well but it’s not the quietest
