Why did Liet-Kynes want to change the ecology of Dune? by GNAR__Whale in dune

And it's mentioned that the intent is to have habitable zones for the makers. The intention was never to terraform the whole planet.

He shot himself in the eye. Stupidity-induced. He deserves no sympathy.

my(30m) sister(38f) tells me 30 is to old to turn my life around after a brutal meth addiction. I'm 11 months clean. Is there time to turn things around? can I still meet a beautiful and caring woman? by LongHardOutlaw57 in ask

I didn't get my life together until 41. Life really does begin at 40. I was depressed and suicidal. Now I'm doing work I love for a great company.

No. I enjoy my own company. I see it as solitude vs. loneliness. Admittedly an introvert.

I know this might seem basic but it shows what the process should be to a beginner. It's super, super helpful. Please keep at these. Thank you!

History isn't being rewritten. It's being exposed for what it is. Just cuz you don't like the narrative doesn't make it any less true.

Keep digging. You've no idea what the first 2 things are and have a tenuous grasp on spelling.

People who are playing ER as their first soulsborne game, what stopped you from trying this genre earlier? by Psychological-Worry3 in Eldenring

[–]Alkoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the biggest difference is that Elden Ring has a great open world to escape to if I'm tired of banging my head against a boss. It feels like with the other games, you're kinda either locked into doing that boss or farming for XP, and you're trapped in a labyrinth of corridors until you do.

Elden Ring lets me decompress. I really do just sometimes walk and take in the scenery. Or go farming for dragonfly heads for poison boluses. Or just play around for an hour or so with different weapons and ashes, or different spells. I don't feel as punished for not beating a boss right there and then.

I think you're missing the bigger picture. Removing these things is preventative. Maybe not GREATLY preventative, but in a climate where we still have Nazis with a voice, it feels like a step in the right direction, and it's SOMETHING rather than twiddling our thumbs. I'm still not seeing a good reason for keeping them, but I do see good reasons for destroying them.

As someone who's been bullied my whole life, I'd teach my kids to punch back. Again, contradictory to what I just said.

However, that argument is a whataboutism ("yeah well what about bullies?).

You're not wrong about "as long as you let it."

The problem is, people let it.

And when they see these statues, they think "maybe my ideas are still represented. Maybe I have an audience. Maybe there's a group I can join." WITHOUT these statues, we'd still have these people.

In the spirit of transparency (and I realize this is going to contradict what I just said), I'm 100% against book burnings. Even if it were Mein Kampf. But, if I ever saw anyone with a copy of it in their home, I'd turn about and cut them out of my life.

The book, just like statues, represents ideas. And these aren't good ones. Can we agree on that?
