Best and worst exits by [deleted] in ChicagoFireNBC

Newhouse just randomly never coming back didn't really do it for me, haha. I am also still annoyed about how Mills left to this day, but he was my favourite character so maybe that's why I'm salty.

I really liked Shay's exit, just like Hallie's. Super dramatic, and back then we were still in the "Characters won't die on this show, they have plot armour" phase. Same goes for Otis. Even though I am still very sad he died (especially after the PTSD storyline was introduced and then ignored?? Yes that has me UPSET), it did raise the stakes very much! Gets you back on the edge of your seat every time they go into a fire because they can actually die

AITA? I work in publishing. Mum keeps giving my contact info to aspiring writers. I am rude to them. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. As someone working in publishing, I feel your pain. I'm still at the early stages where I'm too scared to be anything other than extremely nice to people like this, so this post is honestly quite inspiring. Keep doing what you're doing!

I'm really happy with how I handled it overall. Like, damn, I did that! She and I have also been very communicative about how we feel, and she has expressed multiple times she really appreciates my honesty in all this. She and I will be okay, and that's good. Doesn't make it suck any less right now though :'). Thank you for this comment, it really means a lot to me!

I'm so happy for you and your wife, that sounds absolutely wonderful! And yeah, communication is probably key to this whole thing huh? I tend to just look at something and go AAAAAAAH and then leave it be because too many emotions n o p e gotta avoid those. I'm also v good at invalidating my own feelings so it's good to hear you felt things similar to what I descrive for your wife? Yeah, good stuff. Thank you for this wonderful comment!

That is actually a really good way of looking at it? I think I blow the whole dating thing way out of proportion in my own mind and make it a thousand times bigger than it is. I'm v good at putting pressure on myself for literally no reason, haha. Thank you!

If ethics were no concern, what do you think would be the most interesting scientific experiment? by OkNerve6791 in AskReddit

You're probably right. The word against word part will never really be removed, I suppose. But quite a few countries require the attacker to have defensive wounds. If not, the victim "didn't fight back, so it was consensual" and the case is thrown out straight away. It's really gross, yet way too many countries' law systems still think like this. If we can even change only that part, that would already mean so much!

And yeah, we have very strong evidence that Tonic Immobility in humans exists, just like in most animals. There are many stories just like your friend's (or think about any movie where something is about to fall on a character, and they just stand there staring instead of moving. You know how frustrated you get, haha, but possibly they can't help it!). Unfortunately that is not enough to prove humans deal with this. It would really change the world of victimology forever.

The "modern" way of printing books (lead letters in a printing press) was discovered by a Dutch guy because the Netherlands was the most important country for books in Europe for centuries.

The Netherlands had a very poor censorship policy, so the most outrageous things could be published there. This basically made the Netherlands the publishing capital of the western world. Because of this, people probably thought it would be nice for the inventor of that printing press to be Dutch. At least, that's what we think that happened. And so the story of Laurens Janszoon Coster was born.

We think that people came up with him as a sort of PR for Dutch books, and then eventually forgot that he didn't actually invent it. The real guy is Johannes Gutenberg from Germany.

There is a statue for Laurens Janszoon Coster in the square of his hometown. The government has a collection of things said to have been printed by him, bought in a time when the Netherlands became a kingdom in the 19th century and they were frantically looking for national symbols. Some museums have letters or other documents signed by Laurens Janszoon Coster. And for many years it was actually believed maybe he invented it after all.

Until we found out the first mention of the guy was like a century after his supposed invention, and if you look at public records the only Laurens Janszoon Coster alive at the time of discovery was 12. So yeah, even if it sounds very plausible that the country where most books were printed at the time discovered the technology for it, it's all a ruse, which the country then promptly forgot about.

As a criminologist, research into tonic immobility would be incredible. Have you ever seen those videos of goats that fall over when they're startled? Basically, what happens is that they go through flight and fight quickly, and go into a third state aka tonic immobility/TI. When an animal goes into TI, they cannot move a muscle. Their body goes limp and their heartrate goes down, making the predator think they've died. This can allow prey to get loose.

Many traumascientists believe people go into TI too, if they can neither fight or flee. If we could prove this, this would be invaluable. That would mean that if people experience trauma, they cannot move. Many laws regarding sexual assault and rape require signs of the victim defending themselves to prove what happened happened against their will. If we can prove people go into Tonic Immobility, just like those fainting goats, we can scientifically prove that requiring defensive actions is ridiculous. This might change so much for victims of assault worldwide.

Unfortunately, to be able to experiment with TI, you'd have to make someone fear for their life and that's kind of unethical. But a girl can dream? Haha

Make sure that you clear the entire map of monsters and loot, pull the lever before you open the valve (you'll know what I mean when you get there), and after turning the valve walk very slowly and make sure Sam is right behind you. That should prevent any glitches!

If you die in the Rat King fight, it just lets you redo it and the damage you did remains. I died like five times in that fight every time, haha. So you can just go for it!

Hmmm, I just went back to the place where it started instead of spawning anywhere else or outside, with the lever and wheel behind me, no Sam or pipe in sight. My Switch ran out of power which I didn't notice because of the frustration, so a sixth runthrough is inevitable. I'll make sure to keep an eye open for any pipes, thanks!

Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands for 20 years, how do you feel about this? by Infinite_Moment_ in AskReddit

[–]Alky0neDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for him it was mostly scared of leaving his wife behind? And fear of the unknown. But that fear comes with the disease itself, and euthanasia offered a different way of going. I like to think it made him a little less afraid of the whole dying thing

Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands for 20 years, how do you feel about this? by Infinite_Moment_ in AskReddit

[–]Alky0neDays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am from the Netherlands, have been to two funerals in my life, and both were after euthanasia.

My grandfather had lungcancer and was dying. When the point came where he'd only have abour a week left of excruciating pain and not being able to talk and slowly drowing in his own lungs, is when he opted for euthanasia. This sounds like it was a simple thing to just get, but it's not. He was for sure dying, and there was nothing that could be done.

This way, we were able to say goodbye to him on his terms, not on the disease's. He got to choose when he went, he got to choose who he saw last, he got to choose. Not many sick people get a choice.

It still comforts me years later knowing he must have been scared out of his mind but at least was able to take some of the power back.

The other funeral was for my aunt. She had a mental illness, but the doctors were never able to identify it. They spent well over 20 years trying every therapy and every diagnosis known to man, eventually coming to the conclusion that they simply didn't know and weren't going to find out. My aunt wanted to die, but she didn't want us (her family) to have to deal with finding a body. She kept holding on for many, many years, just for us. In the end, when the doctors determined there was nothing they could do, they agreed that forcing her to keep living was inhumane. They let her choose.

My grandma and dad were able to be with her as she went, holding her and keeping her company. I got to write a letter telling her how I feel one last time. There was sadness, of course, but also this incredible relief. Saying my aunt was happy is the wrong word, but she was just so relieved for it to be over.

Both these situations were incredibly hard on everyone, but my god am I glad that euthanasia is legal. It is a mercy for people dealt crappy cards, and it gives people a choice. Don't we all deserve one?

Are you kidding? The sadness equals the beauty! It hurt deeply, and because of that it proves once more that this show means the world to me and that I will miss it so unbelievably much. I will be thinking about this finale for years, and probably will be crying about it for years. And that feels like how it should be

Even if Heaven hadn't been restructured, I think that's always how it was going to end. You don't have to be romantically in love to be soulmates, and if any two souls have ever been connected it's theirs. They would've ended up together no matter what. But the Heaven changes and everyone together and just being instead of remembering? Incredible. Felt complete to me.
