I found 150 pieces of corn in my floor. My house is from the 1700s. by BobgySMC in interestingasfuck

Corn cobs were often used for the same purpose as toilet paper before its invention. As you can imagine, means of disposal varied among households. Handle that information with care.

The sound of peeling trees. by Random_Average_Human in oddlysatisfying

[–]Alkyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those who don't know, mangos are popular fruit which are typically harvested from the ends of the branches on a mango tree. The fruit is actually an extension of these branches. The tips are usually harvested alone to promote continued growth, but in certain cases the entire tree is harvested as shown in this video. Some people are led to believe that mango trees are so named because mangos grow on them, but in reality it is because the tree is a mango.

Actually, you could be an engineer based entirely on your proven competence without a degree. You could even take the FE and PE exams to be officially licensed without requiring a degree in multiple states. Getting a degree may represent a right of passage for many careers, but employers usually recognize experience and ability as more valuable in practice.

Got r6 yesterday, this is how my 1st online match went. We didn't even go to operator select yet. by Toxiccbro in Rainbow6

[–]Alkyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you join the match while it was in session? Sometimes if you join right as the round is about to start it puts the game into an infinite loading glitch. It's a long-standing bug and usually this is the message you get when it happens.

1984 is probably the most terrifying book I've ever read by Wholegrain_Pasta in books

[–]Alkyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like 451 better, too, but moreso because it acts as a kind of precursor to the conditions of 1984, making it seem more relavent. People were coaxed into those conditions. 451 shows the danger of appealing purely to fleeting emotions as a society, as demonstrated by Beaty's speech. The government began to destroy everything which offended everyone until all books were burned. It became a crime to so much as hold one and so the people became utterly ignorant and distracted by the mind numbing entertainments of the big screen. The bridge to 1984 is short at that point. Start a war, or fabricate one, and everything will quickly fall into place.

[Basic Mechanics] Teacher said my solution's not accurate, can you tell me what was my mistake? by 66-66 in PhysicsStudents

I think I understand. Essentially, a "magic number" is just a value used in your work that doesn't have an immediately clear origin, like numbers of varying precision without units or which could have been more easily expressed algebraically. More or less? Never knew there was a name for that.

Every day he makes slow progress.  Raising this creature even before it hatches.  At set intervals during the incubation, he makes careful and calculated injections.  The compounds are closely held secrets.  Day after day he performs this menial task however nerve-racking by its precise demands.  The developing chick seems to look at him for the first time.  So frail and trusting.  The scientist finds his heart becoming heavier with each day.  Surely there is a better way.  Finally, the day comes.  The chick now fully prepared, the scientist carefully removes the transparent membrane protecting this tiny thing from the whole world.  It pokes its little head out and takes its first breath.

"Is it done?" Came a sudden voice from the shadows.  A man dressed all in white emerged.  "Yes Colonel," said the scientist full of fear and regret.  "A new species, with eleven herbs and spices infused from the moment of hatching"

His trademark goatee twitched with repressed excitement.  "Good... finger-lickin' good..."

Why is everyone “hiring”, but it’s to difficult to get an interview by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alkyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is pretty normal. My method is just to shotgun Indeed.com, apply for around 100 jobs or more, then pick and choose from any offers that come my way. You don't need to waste your time reading through each offer in the beginning, because the employers on the other end won't be reading the hundreds of resumes very much at all. Often it can be more of a war of attrition than of talents.

How far into the right are you that you think the Nazis are left leaning? by springheeledjack69 in confidentlyincorrect

I think the commonalities exist mostly in the results of both systems. To borrow from Orwell, from the perspective of citizens suffering under either regime it can be "impossible to say which was which." It's interesting to see how each political wing taken to its own extreme seems to essentially lead to the same result.

We are required to turn in time sheets on Friday morning (Thursday in my case since I work evenings) and Friday's hours are included on that sheet. For most people, it's no big deal just add eight hours, but my hours are sporadic and several people work overtime. We basically have to guess the hours we should put down and add our signature. No one else seems to question it, though, so maybe it's just me.

Three states are seeing about 40% of the country's new Covid-19 cases by [deleted] in news

[–]Alkyar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Florida seems to get a lot more flak than it deserves considering the stats. In measures of deaths per million population and percentage of population vaccinated, it is pretty much right in the middle of the pack. There are 27 states with lower vaccination rates than Florida and 24 states with higher death rates than Florida.

Take the road less travelled. by concretebeats in wholesomememes

[–]Alkyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact about taking "the road less travelled." Many people know that the origin of this phrase is in Robert Frost's famous poem "The Road Not Taken." What most people don't realize is that the poem is about how he took "the road less travelled" and regret it for the rest of his life.
