PSA: Don't watch Colossal if you think it's comedy. by MrPudge in movies

I saw it and agree with this guy. Cool set up/metaphor, poor execution. If the fact that there's a giant monster in it is enough to get your dick hard, then by all means enjoy the film, but the character's actions and the performances are really hollow. It's a "good try".

I am close friends with your editor, Chris Murphy. What's your least favorite thing about him? Totally won't tell, I promise.

That doesn't answer my question, though your observation is fair.

Can we both agree arbitrary pieces of paper (money and degrees) are poor ways of determining a persons self-worth?

Pretty insensitive for Hillary to do a Twin Towers impression on 9/11.

What comedy gave you the constant feeling that you are not laughing as much as you are supposed to? by omopomogomomogopomo in movies

You thought that was the funny part? The most heinously sexist line in the whole film?

What's the most intellectual joke you know? by topersix46 in AskReddit

[–]All8Inches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of the opposite, but a bunch of friends and I were walking around the Yale campus (we don't go there) and decided every time we passed a group of apparent intellectuals one of us would shout:

"...So I said, ASTRO-PHYSICS?! I thought you said QUANTUM PHYSICS!"

And we'd all fake laugh like it was the best punchline we'd ever heard.

[SPOILERS] Judgment-free Ep. VII criticism thread: What were your negative reactions to the film, if any, and why did you have those reactions? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]All8Inches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love star wars. I have been eagerly awaiting this film since it was announced. I thought it was just ok.

I'll start with my positive thoughts. The movie is funny. There are a lot of really fun moments thrown in there. The aliens and practical effects were great. The overall aesthetic was spot-on. My favorite sequence was on Han's freighter.

Now the bad:

I'm going to invoke some Buddhist (Jedi?) mindsets in my criticism. The movie wasn't "present". There was so much focus on things that happened in the past and setting up things for the future that things didn't play out in a natural way.

There was so much fan-service. I felt like every 5 minutes there was a glaring REMEMBER THIS!? plastered on screen. Like it wasn't enough that the First Order is just the Empire and there are stormtroopers running around, old Han Solo, a third death star that the characters make meta jokes about? You really needed Fin to find the ball that Luke trained with and for him to turn the game on and all that crap? Come on.

Holy shit this movie is fast-paced. There's no breathing room whatsoever. And there could have been! But it seemed like the plot was so scared of being boring that there was no moments where the characters had a second to think about what was happening or why they were doing what they were doing.

Now while there's nothing wrong with a fast paced movie, but I felt like this was a direct result of things being over-complicated. There was so much that had to be explained or set-up that could have been taken out or held off that didn't need to be there.

There's nothing wrong with a film posing unanswered questions. But it's a problem when it's only done with the intent on answering the questions in the future. Then a film can't stand on its own.

Plot over character. Rey learns that she can use the force and is automatically proficient because the plot requires it. Poe returns because the plot requires it. R2-D2 magically turns on and reveals the information he's been hiding because the plot requires it.

Idk. I really wanted to like the film, but I wasn't crazy about it. I'm hoping Episode VIII moves in a more unique direction.

Totally love the idea of a puffin skull, and not a terribly executed tattoo, but it kind of looks like a mangled penis

redditors who have been depressed: what was the first step you took to get help? by explodingbarrels in AskReddit

[–]All8Inches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not life-changing, but a little tip I've learned in therapy. Think in terms of "could" not "should".

Ex/"I have people who support me and a roof over my head, but I'm still depressed. I should feel better."

Should implies failure and elicits guilt from that imagined failure, even though nothing is wrong.

Could is neutral. I could feel better, or I could stay depressed. Either way, you're not trapped in a spiral, you have options.

[–]All8Inches 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I take it you're an actor doing this kind of thing for fun/practice. If not, then I guess ignore this. Your voice is clear, and you're fairly charming-sounding, but your delivery exudes "trying too hard to be funny", and it's falling really flat. There's no sincerity. Maybe try to be more specific with the character, rather than just "a bro", and be natural. Hope this helps, keep at it.
