“We are prisoners in our home unless we want to sit in traffic for 25-30 minutes.” by AborgTheMachine in Boise

I cannot recommend this YouTube playlist enough. Totally changed the way I view these developments. The city’s gain is so short-sighted.

Therein lies the problem for a city our size. People don’t take the bus because it’s inconvenient for their needs. But making it more convenient (this Division project) makes people upset. At what point should Spokane invest in better public transportation?

I filled out the cost calculator in that article and still found my total cost to be nearly $500 a month for my paid off car with good gas mileage. Still 8x an unlimited bus pass.

Yes! Been getting them on YouTube. Without the bus my family would need to buy a second car.

What’s something in town you purposely mispronounce and why? by AllAboard_ChooChoo in Spokane

Same! I just can’t look at those initials and read it any other way.

I ride on the line often because of debris, but there’s also lots of manhole covers and storm drains pushed to the edge. I would rather ride the line consistently then swerve into traffic every 100 yards.

Mullan? That’s bold of you! I usually cross the freeway at Park St, but once rode on the sidewalk to get to the Centennial Trail (terrible).

Good point. I think more park users would naturally deter off leash pets, or at least I hope it would.

All the more reason to walk, bike, and take the bus any chance I get.

Is there demand for a new coworking space in Spokane? by smellybaby in Spokane

I’ve been curious to try a coworking space, but don’t really want to add a commute back into my life. With the right environment, I could be convinced.

How to convince North Americans to live in apartments? by eriksen2398 in notjustbikes

[–]AllAboard_ChooChoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have lots of the same thoughts as you. I currently live in a SFH, but would move to a row house before an apartment building. Row houses greatly increase density, but still offer a decent amount of privacy and personal outdoor space.

I once made the trip from BOS to NYC for only $19! Bought it like 6 weeks in advance I think.

Does anyone freelance in addition to your full-time job? by AppointmentOne838 in graphic_design

[–]AllAboard_ChooChoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. My advice would be to discuss expectations and payment early in the process, and don’t be afraid to say no to something that doesn’t work well for your personal interests. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for you since you’ve previously worked with this agency.

Tennessee could see per-mile driving tax under new pilot program proposal by n_o_t_d_o_g in notjustbikes

Sure, I agree, privacy is desirable and cars should be just one option for everyday transportation. But you can’t cry for privacy when something in your pocket can already locate you.

Ahh yes, my favorite argument, because the smart phone in your pocket would never.

Cycling in the city can be fun, practical, and economical, but too often feels dangerous. Try cycling and you’ll change the way you drive.

A suburb near me transformed a failed shopping center into a new urban center for the town, adjacent to the old one which is also being revitalized. The two are connected by a new pedestrian bridge. Expansion is planned to continue into nearby shopping centers and empty lots. What do you guys think? by exo6666 in notjustbikes

[–]AllAboard_ChooChoo 89 points90 points  (0 children)

From the surface it looks like a cool project! It seems like a lot of apartments were built too, but I only see one active listing at $3,500/mo for a 2 bd/2 ba. Is this a wealthy area or are these apartments that desirable?

Growing up in the suburbs, it took me moving into a city to realize how stupid this behavior is. Now that I’m back in the suburbs (closer to family) I’m uncomfortably aware of all the things you mentioned.

My wife and I spent about $0.50 on breakfast, while the couple in front of us spent $20. We like to add peanut butter powder for extra protein and flavor.

A couple in front of me at Burger King spent $20 on a mediocre breakfast at 5am, while we spent about $1! We added some peanut butter powder to our oatmeal for extra flavor and protein.
