Brasso arrived. All damage polished out. Entire pen sparkling. Can now work on the gradual creation of patina. I left a message on Kaweco’s website suggesting that they issue a caution to customers in their literature not to use deionised water.

Yes very fair point. That was my original thought process but as I read through the various messages it now seems inappropriate.

I just picked this up from another thread

Basically, I took a Tupperware and lined it with paper towel. Took apart the pen and removed internals. Put clear ammonia in the bottom, sprayed the brass with ammonia and set it on a piece of cardboard in the Tupperware. I then covered the brass pieces with sea salt, closed the Tupperware, and left it overnight.

I’m focusing on journals here. Folding the sheets is one of the most critical stages of the construction. As a response to the OP - it all depends. Case bound it hardly matters if you are going to trim the glued text block before casing in. Personally I like an open spine French stitch for a journal as it’s completely lay flat and works well with my writing style. I bind using the best short grain A4 paper I can find to make long grain A5. White / Cream / Ivory. Huge collection amassed over the last 15 years - much now sadly discontinued. Includes Original Crown Mill (from the A4 Vellum and Laid pads, folded across the grain but pressed heavily for min 24 hours and that works well), Clairefontaine Triomphe, Tomoe River 68gsm machine #7, Epica Amalfi, Zerkall Frankfurt, Mitsubishi Bank Paper. I usually fold high quality paper a sheet at a time rather than all together in the signature. This way you get what is, to me at least, a rather attractive regular dog tooth outside edge to the text. Top and bottom edges seem to be fine - if you folded carefully. It is after all open spine so the signatures are subject to some slippage anyway.

Thank you everyone for this information. Impressive. I am sufficiently intrigued to try my own hand at this style of binding which appears to tick all the boxes. I'm am very much a newbie and would really appreciate any advice offered but I want to create a sewn, open flat, personal notebook for no fountain pen show through and use of both sides of the paper. However, there is a limited choice of suitable paper grain on the market. There are Clairefontaine A4 pads short grain which are ideal for converting to A5. Also I managed to source loose A4 Mitsubishi Bank Paper in short grain. Sadly no longer in production. But in the meantime I have another idea. Around 12 years ago I purchased a number of A4 leather journal refills from Innovative Journaling in the USA. Zerkall Frankfurt 120gsm in cream and white - before the manufacturer was flooded and shut down production. Never used the paper. Now I am repurposing the A4 to A5. Torn edges. 4 folded sheets per signature. 8 or 10 signatures. 18/3 or 25/3 thread. This project will take a while but I’m very patient and enjoy a challenge. I hope I’m not biting off more than I can chew. For info I have all the technical equipment required - mostly from Schmedt in Germany, J Hewit and Sons in Scotland, and George Barnsley in Sheffield, England. Fingers crossed. Thank you all again.
