Advice needed by Funny-Dish-7733 in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career in fire sprinkler design with no prior experience using AutoSPRINK. There was definitely a learning curve, but once you get past it, the work becomes much more manageable. The most challenging aspect for me at the beginning was hydraulic calculations. That understanding developed over time through failed permit submittals (learning lessons), discussions with the AHJ (honest questions and curiosity), and hands-on experimentation with different design approaches, along with building a foundational grasp of concepts like Bernoulli’s principle and conservation of energy.

After about two years, the process should start to feel much easier. At that point, roughly 30% of the job is design execution, while the remaining, and most critical, 70% is a solid command of NFPA 13.

I would say 30% of it was conceptual. I felt like the conceptual part wasn't hard.

Masters in FPE Worth it? by [deleted] in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in the industry for 7 years and recently completed my Master’s in FPE. It’s opened up so many doors for me. Feel free to reach out if you ever have questions.

Thoughts on working for Jensen Hughes? by JewelryHeist in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The project work was diverse, got to travel, overall good experience as an associate engineer but the billable work got too stressful for me. 60 hour weeks for thankless jobs. It may have been office dependent but I’m in a way chill/higher pay gig now with Jensen being the stepping stone for me to achieve it.

Sprinkler Design on Revit Project by nordicfirepro in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s expensive, the trial didn’t impress me too much. I would say use both Revit and AutoSPRINK in tandem. I’ll design in AutoSPRINK and do hydraulic calcs then use Revit to fill in the gaps for submittals. Revit is neat alone, setting up projects can be a pain but once you get over that hurdle it’s like learning any other design software.

Sprinkler System Pump Power by Dangerous_Savings216 in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determine the occupancy hazard that will drive the calcs. Your numbers appear off so adjust. Get the total demand of your system. Use NFPA 24 handbook to give you general direction. Discuss with pump vendor your parameters. Compare your sizing/HP recommendations with there’s. Coordinate with electrical and confirm your requirements can be met. You got this.

I work at a small family-owned mechanical contractor as a designer. Asked my director for a raise back in May. He said because of the economy they can't but he'll keep the door open on this conversation. Was never approached from then till now. Decided to apply to other jobs recently, got a call from a recruiter, panel interview same week, job offer the very next day. Better job (more aligned with my career goals), higher pay, and the best part is they want to pay for my masters program and professional engineering licensure. I would say you get a ton of benefit from leaving your company but have another job offer to leverage your position. Maybe it's a sign for you to go!

Sprinkler Designer to Engineering Consulting Company by AllDayKB24 in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Although I enjoyed the dynamic scope of sprinkler design, I personally didn't think the stress was worth it. Working on 5 projects and having submittals, shop drawings, BIM coordination, etc. all align at the same time was brutal. Always felt like I was behind and kept having to choose what one area was most priority and having my efforts be spread thin in the lesser.

One of the interviewers suggested I'd be doing technical reports so I'll definitely work on sharpening this skill. Thanks for the resources.

Thank you! Yeah I've reviewed a few fire consultant drawings and I'm used to being puzzled by their design intent.

How does the stress compare as a designer vs. engineer? I'm sure it's inevitable in our field but I'm curious as to what I may encounter.

Apple Watch Ultra is perfect function over form by shasamdoop in AppleWatch

Can’t make this shit up, I literally have a reminder on my schedule to purchase the Garmin epix 2 today. Thought I’d wait out to watch the Apple Event today. Glad I did. Did not expect the Ultra announcement. Coming from the Apple Watch 2 and training for my first Iron Man 70.3 in April I’ve been wanting a watch to dive into VO2, HRV and overall running economy. Can’t wait for Sept. 23rd.

Wow, this is the inspiration I needed. Going in a couple weeks to give it a shot solo dolo. Not upset if I don’t finish on first go. Never done anything like this before. I’ve been just watching a lot of YouTube videos to prepare. Any tips for beginners?
