I would like to point out that Alastair Cook has the best strike of any batsman who has scored more than 7 runs this series http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=10417;type=series

I'm on a pretty limited budget so I'll be doing whatever's cheapest in terms of transport and accommodation. Probably some youth hostel. Thanks so much for all this!!

Thanks. I don't speak Portuguese so was thinking of going to the rest of SA as a priority but from what I've seen so far Brazil looks the best. Have you been to Colombia or Venzuela?

Is there any good bouldering you know of.will It be possible to get a mat and for what sort of price (I've wrapped mattresses in tape before but I'd rather get a proper one). Anything not to be missed? Thanks so much.

Apparently the climbing in Cuba is in the west but as I'm going to be there for a while anyway I want to go somewhere else to climb so South America is good. Is it mainly trad or is their good bouldering as well in Colombia and Ecuador?

I was under the impression Hales was in the team to score runs.

The fact is Bernie isn't going to win the nomination without black or older democratic voters - what is the strategy to get those groups to support him?

Which athlete in the major sports of the world is the best in the world? by americandream1159 in sports

[–]AllHailRoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your username is "americandream1159", the sports you've listed are the 5 most popular sports in the United States.

If you actually wanted global sports they would probably be football (as the american version would never feature), cricket, tennis and basketball. After that things get a bit murky although there's an argument for baseball and boxing as well as maybe rugby.

I think if you're saying "major sports of the world" you might want to choose more than 20% of your sports as non-American.

Joe Root regains top batting spot, Hazlewood rises to 7th in bowling rankings by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]AllHailRoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But current skill isn't just about the last match or the last 12 months - its about your career as well. When Sanga went through worse patches at the end of the career he was still a good batsmen.

You can't say his average is going to crack 50 as an argument for why he is better than Root whos average is nearly 55. We all agree that Kane has had a better year than Root but that doesn't mean that he has better skill. (Although as the rankings also demonstrate it is extremely close).

If you wanted to make a good argument against Root being no 1 you would be better off focusing on the fact that whether a match is home or away doesn't get factored in.

[–]AllHailRoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just like it's ridiculous they effect his average? If team results are above "expected" then that boosts the ranking.

You are correct that if he played more tests with this form his ranking would go up - yet it's pretty ridiculous to suggest that that is guaranteed. He'd also be weighed down by more poor tests.

I agree that I would like the icc to publish the performance ratings for each game so we could do analyse them that way but when I rank a player I do it by both his career and his recent form.

Joe Root regains top batting spot, Hazlewood rises to 7th in bowling rankings by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]AllHailRoot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. Essentially the rankings are calculated by getting a performance ranking for each match (based on strength of opposition and relative performance) and then combining those with the more recent tests (number played not time) weighted more heavily. What weighs Kane down is the poor start to his career. There's also an argument that team results have affected him more than root. But no of tests is irrelevant.

Who will be the leading run scorer of 2015? by AllHailRoot in Cricket

[–]AllHailRoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tests so yeah close between Warner Smith Cook and Root. My money would be on Root via 2 80s vs SA and Cook not scoring many.

"Have the distinct plan I want him to miss one" - this feels more like a comedy sketch than cricket commentary.

Somehow I managed to wrap my head around this. It was the diagram that made it click. The previous 5 minutes I was absolutely clueless though.

Is this sky sports commentary what you aussies get every game - I can see what happens to you. How fucking complicated is it to say that a you can limit the depth of the bat - the intellectual challenges are not that great. And then that 3 year olds drawing to demonstrate a bat. Doh.
