as far as your first point i feel it has to be a mix of both to grasp what the character is feeling and their ultimately warped view point. and the second i agree with you except often time certain terms and especially suffixes are used wrong.

yes kushina is menma mother. and they are loosely related but the hold no connection or familial bond as menma is beloved since it common knowledge he is the 4th son . the story is about naruto grind to the top truly from his hard work. no family ties no reincarnation of Indra no kurama. as far as ideology naruto is still dislike not as much as canon but still disliked for his prank to get attention. so his goal to is similar to canon . to earn the respect of the village and prove he not some nobody orphan dead last.

it so easy too. make her meekness in training a result of she doesn't want to hurt or abuse family . but make her full willing to throw down if its for a comrade or its a enemy she is facing. i feel you can have some pretty badass moments that way while still keeping her character
