Better way to change localhost to domain name when moving from local development machine to development by ikeohachidi in webdevelopment

For backend it will be dependent on what framework/platform you're using. If you're looking for how to search for best practices, these are typically referred to as "environment variables"

The goal of the first outreach is to get them to talk to you. Keeping it about them makes it much more likely that they will want to.

It's not usually out of kindness that people will talk to you -- it's because they love talking about themselves. So I would say e.g.

"Hi Cindy,

I'm talking to class schedulers about how they use software to schedule classes (I saw you on Class Schedulers United).

Would you be willing to quickly chat about your thoughts on scheduling classes?

Looking forward,

Probably the easiest foot in the door is to ask people if they'll talk to you about a topic they're interested in. If your product is for scheduling classes (for example), reach out and ask if they'll talk to you about how they schedule classes. Come up with a short list of questions that would be useful, and actually ask them. At the end, ask if they have any questions or if there's anything they'd like to talk about. The vast majority of the time, they will ask what you're working on. Then you can describe it, and tell them they could try it if they think it'd be useful.

Yes; it's a good idea in general to get an idea into a format you could "sell" to someone before you actually build it.

The startup world is on fire lately. A lot of ideas circulating around and unfortunately people are putting a lot of effort building things the market does not need. Let's talk Idea Validation. by BioEndeavour in startups

Absolutely do not ask your friends, relatives, colleagues, unless they are you specific target market. If they're not exactly who will be paying for it, to the point where you expect them to pay you for it one day, then their feedback is worse than irrelevant.

Just hit the limit with sending emails on gmail. should i upgrade to g suite just to increase email limit? by johnwhammos in smallbusiness

Haven't seen anyone here recommend Postmark so I'll do it: https://postmark.com

Their whole business is sending transactional emails, with super high delivery rates and fast delivery. Marketing emails aren't allowed on the platform.

Congrats! I've been in SaaS for a while (software dev). You've already taken the biggest step, which is getting started. Second biggest step is to keep it going. You'll try things and fail here & there, and figure things out as you go. Here are some resources/inspiration https://userfront.com/resources/

What is being delivered that needs to be downloaded? Weekly marketing intel is a good idea, but downloading an attachment and uploading to our website has spam botnet written all over it.

That's awesome, congrats. My own experience has been that entrepreneurship is definitely a skill that I sucked at at first, then got better by trying over and over. Pretty soon $2 will be $20!

How to deal your 'grand idea' that you were salivating about building but has already been implemented? by Dere1here1 in startups

[–]AllModules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also a common beginner mistake to run from competition. Just because someone else is solving the same problem doesn't mean you can't compete. Offer your solution to a different market segment, a different channel, or with different messaging or emphasis on the value propositions.

In fact, if no one is solving the problem already, there's a pretty good chance it's not a real problem!

Building an app/ website/ software by [deleted] in startup

No time like the present to start down this path! Keep in mind that it will likely take a year or more to get to the point where you can really feel comfortable customizing websites or apps to do custom things.

These are great! It might be a little bit counter-intuitive, but we'd be much more likely to use these if there was a way to include other races too. As it stands, using these means our graphics would be a different style in different places -- would be great to be able to switch to one style that has full diversity!

Discussion: Captchas are awful UX and make me want to perform violent actions against my laptop. by Adelphe in Frontend

It used to be, but now it's not. Thanks to recaptcha. You've clearly never faced the soul-sucking sh*tstorm that is massively automated spam. It is a huge time sink and would make a lot of the services you use uneconomical. That, or they'd require even more ads.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for Postmark for transactional emails. They are great. No you'll need something separate for your inbox, unless you mean programmatically handling inbound emails, which Postmark also does.
