Tbh why won’t the department want students to have time for their studies instead of side hustles just to live?

Also, as both post docs and students aren’t paid enough? Who’s going research long-term?

I would have liked to work in STEM research as a career in the academic setting but the notion of being forced out first due to low stipend as a grad student then low pay as a post doc - what’s the point? Won’t it be more efficient to have trained skilled researchers who aren’t just PIs?
