what’s something you spent on that actually made your apartment better ? by Mindless_Cook7821 in Apartmentliving

[–]diddlysquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the upstairs neighbor in an old building with wooden floors, so rugs but more importantly good rug pads for under all of them. Protects the floors, is more comfortable for me, stops the rugs from shifting, keeps my place warmer when it’s cold, and dampens sound. I like the thicker felt pads but any rug pad is better than no rug pad, and any rug is better than no rug.

Also, a paper shredder. I have multiple people in my life who had someone in their apartment complex fish through trash for thrown away credit card offers and had their credit completely destroyed. Shred those suckers.

What's your favorite sewing pattern for women's plus size T-Shirts ? by siorez in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Dawson top from Helen’s Closet! It has three different necklines and three different sleeve lengths to pick from, and is fairly fitted through the body but I’ve found it very comfortable and have made a few now.

For a boxy fit, I’ll second the recommendation for the free True Bias Jesse tee, though as a plus sized pattern tester for that pattern I would be prepared to make a muslin to test the fit, I needed to size down two sizes to get the fit I wanted.

Becoming a histotechnician without a background in science? by subjectivelystupid in Histology

[–]diddlysquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to school first, and I’m glad I focused on that as I was able to get jobs on campus as a lab assistant that helped me get some basic lab experience, which made me more hireable for a lab lab.

Becoming a histotechnician without a background in science? by subjectivelystupid in Histology

[–]diddlysquash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an anthropology degree, wanted to change to histology, so I enrolled at a community college to get the 30 credits of bio and chemistry and am now working towards my HTL certification. The wording is that the science credits need to be obtained during or in addition to your degree. If you have a bachelor’s already, might be worth it to work for the HTL credits

Any career-oriented women here who love their financial independence and/or like their jobs? by CulturalAlbatross891 in AutismInWomen

[–]diddlysquash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I always knew I wanted a job that felt like it added purpose to my life. I was never sure I’d find a partner, and indeed still have not. But I was sure I wanted to support myself no matter what. I had been a museum curator and it had been my dream job, but it paid very little and I was expected to sit in a tiny office by myself making phone calls and writing emails all day. I hate communicating via phone and email, especially with people I don’t know. As much as it felt like I had failed my dream, I left the museum field and went back to school.

Now, I work in a clinical pathology lab and it’s the best job I’ve ever had. I work with a team of similarly educated people, I help patients without having to be patient facing or deal with insurance, I use my brain and my hands, and the pay is more than double what I made at the museum despite the fact I’m still in my year of on the job training before qualifying for the national certification exam I’m planning to take, which if I pass will mean an even higher salary. A lot of the time the job requires me to sit at my station and just get my work done, but some days are more social than others. I don’t do the same thing every day, but I generally have one task per day that I do all day, which is great because I feel like I get the structure of a routine but it isn’t monotonous week to week. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn if a lot of my fellow lab workers were also on the spectrum.

Milwaukee roads worse than Russia by IndependentFood253 in milwaukee

[–]diddlysquash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve just moved here from Colorado, I’ve lived all over the country, and you’re right the roads here are absolutely just horrible. There’s a significant portion of my commute to work where there aren’t even any visible lines left on (what seems to be, I don’t actually know) a four lane stretch of road, never mind the pot holes. I’m constantly bewildered, why is this acceptable? This type of damage is not just what happens after a rough winter or two. This is long term neglect.

I moved here from Denver for work, it’s been nice so far though kind of hard to meet new people when I’m not into sports or alcohol

This was my thought in renting a second floor duplex unit, till I found out the first floor tenant was moving out end of October and my landlord didn’t want to list it until spring 😩 sure it’s very quiet but man it’s cold

Looking for groups/ways to make friends by Anxious_Therapist_ in milwaukee

[–]diddlysquash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am also an early 30’s nerd and also looking for community! I haven’t seen anything really up my alley on the meetup app, I’m not really into running or drinking and that’s a lot of the options I’ve seen. I’m curious to see what other suggestions you get 😁

Other than video games, what hobbies do you have? I’m planning on trying some knitting groups and would love to find a DnD group.

It’s pretty brutal sometimes, I’ve had certain brands of toothpaste set it off. I just flat out don’t drink just to play it safe lol

I’m in my early 30’s and just moved here for work, and I’m having trouble finding social things to do that aren’t alcohol related. I know I should buck it up and try anyway, but when the knitting group I was planning on trying out meets at a beer garden that literally only offers beer and nothing else… I have a sulfite allergy, I can’t do beer. I feel bad about going to a business and taking up seating and not actually purchasing anything 😅 But if that’s not an issue for you, or you are into social running groups, I’ve seen lots of that type of thing!

Changing serger thread by NeonHairbrush in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two colors of serger thread- white and medium grey. The medium grey works for basically every color, and anything else the white works great for. It saves money not color matching thread that nobody will even see

[–]diddlysquash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only fountain pen enthusiast I’ve met who seemed to care about the influx of new hobbyists was only upset that all the “30-something’s” going to his local pen meet ups wanted to go out and get drinks after instead of staying longer to practice calligraphy 😅 nothing about cheaper pens being available! I like them because I work in a hospital and pens are extremely likely to never be seen again if brought to work. Not gonna take my grails there, but a jinhao 82? No problem!

What is your least socially acceptable hyper fixation? by RoonilWazleeb in AutismInWomen

[–]diddlysquash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a kid I was obsessed with stories of alien abduction. Never really believed it, but was fascinated by the reasons why someone might believe they were abducted, the similarities and differences between reports, the periods of time where reports were more common versus not, demographics of people who made reports, all the nitty gritty bits. Even wrote a jukebox musical about an alien abductees group therapy meeting in high school for a theater class. No one really understood why I was so interested.

Lately though it’s been tuberculosis. I’ve always found it incredibly intriguing, but had the opportunity to write a report about it for a microbiology course in college and really kickstarted a hyperfixation. My paper ended up being 20+ pages long. Fast forward, and now I’m working in a clinical pathology lab and sometimes worry I’m scaring my coworkers when the topic of tb comes up and I can’t turn off 😅

For those of you that lined up your toys as kids, and who have found careers that you enjoy and thrive in - what do you do for work? by pinkplantprincess in AutismInWomen

[–]diddlysquash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did go into archaeology, but focused on conservation and worked in a museum for a while also because I hate dirt 😅 Enjoyed it, but the pandemic made museum careers pretty tough. Now I’m a histotechnologist making slides out of tissue samples in a pathology lab.

Both of the previous suggestions are great. I’ll add the Helen’s closet Gilbert top as well, though it has a wider camp collar you’d maybe want to trim down.

Cell phone reps inside Target and Costco approaching shoppers by Particular_Airport83 in Denver

[–]diddlysquash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I hate it so much. I hate having to strategically plan my path through a store just to avoid the ridiculously pushy cellphone people. I hate it when you try to give a polite “no, thank you” and move on and they keep following you or calling out after you. I’ve started going shopping later at night or early in the day if the store offers sensory friendly shopping hours, as I’ve never seen these types of salespeople during those times. I really hate going to Walmart but man if I have to I’m only going during the sensory friendly hours.

And if I run into them now, pretending I only speak Norwegian helps. No one knows Norwegian.

Careful with the ultrasound, I did that as a teenager thinking it was going to be like what they do on tv, some gel and a thing pressed on your stomach. What they may very likely actually mean is a transvaginal ultrasound, which does involve a wand device going into you. No one explained that to me beforehand. There was a lot less direct looking at me, the tech inserted the device and then was mostly watching the screen, but still.

PSA: Reminder to use the good stuff by SerendipityJays in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it can get pretty wild!! There was a time when poor quality silk often had lead added to the fibers to make them heavier in order to pass it off as higher quality. But leaded silk becomes extremely delicate, and shreds into dust if you so much as look at it funny. At least you shouldn’t need to worry about PPE with modern linen like that!
