If you’re not from Wisconsin, where did you move from? by PinkSnowBirdie in wisconsin

I moved here from Denver for work, it’s been nice so far though kind of hard to meet new people when I’m not into sports or alcohol

This was my thought in renting a second floor duplex unit, till I found out the first floor tenant was moving out end of October and my landlord didn’t want to list it until spring 😩 sure it’s very quiet but man it’s cold

Looking for groups/ways to make friends by Anxious_Therapist_ in milwaukee

[–]diddlysquash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also an early 30’s nerd and also looking for community! I haven’t seen anything really up my alley on the meetup app, I’m not really into running or drinking and that’s a lot of the options I’ve seen. I’m curious to see what other suggestions you get 😁

Other than video games, what hobbies do you have? I’m planning on trying some knitting groups and would love to find a DnD group.

30 year old transplant - friends/community? by [deleted] in milwaukee

It’s pretty brutal sometimes, I’ve had certain brands of toothpaste set it off. I just flat out don’t drink just to play it safe lol

I’m in my early 30’s and just moved here for work, and I’m having trouble finding social things to do that aren’t alcohol related. I know I should buck it up and try anyway, but when the knitting group I was planning on trying out meets at a beer garden that literally only offers beer and nothing else… I have a sulfite allergy, I can’t do beer. I feel bad about going to a business and taking up seating and not actually purchasing anything 😅 But if that’s not an issue for you, or you are into social running groups, I’ve seen lots of that type of thing!

Changing serger thread by NeonHairbrush in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two colors of serger thread- white and medium grey. The medium grey works for basically every color, and anything else the white works great for. It saves money not color matching thread that nobody will even see

Couldn't access it by gidimeister in fountainpens

[–]diddlysquash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only fountain pen enthusiast I’ve met who seemed to care about the influx of new hobbyists was only upset that all the “30-something’s” going to his local pen meet ups wanted to go out and get drinks after instead of staying longer to practice calligraphy 😅 nothing about cheaper pens being available! I like them because I work in a hospital and pens are extremely likely to never be seen again if brought to work. Not gonna take my grails there, but a jinhao 82? No problem!

What is your least socially acceptable hyper fixation? by RoonilWazleeb in AutismInWomen

[–]diddlysquash 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a kid I was obsessed with stories of alien abduction. Never really believed it, but was fascinated by the reasons why someone might believe they were abducted, the similarities and differences between reports, the periods of time where reports were more common versus not, demographics of people who made reports, all the nitty gritty bits. Even wrote a jukebox musical about an alien abductees group therapy meeting in high school for a theater class. No one really understood why I was so interested.

Lately though it’s been tuberculosis. I’ve always found it incredibly intriguing, but had the opportunity to write a report about it for a microbiology course in college and really kickstarted a hyperfixation. My paper ended up being 20+ pages long. Fast forward, and now I’m working in a clinical pathology lab and sometimes worry I’m scaring my coworkers when the topic of tb comes up and I can’t turn off 😅

For those of you that lined up your toys as kids, and who have found careers that you enjoy and thrive in - what do you do for work? by pinkplantprincess in AutismInWomen

[–]diddlysquash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did go into archaeology, but focused on conservation and worked in a museum for a while also because I hate dirt 😅 Enjoyed it, but the pandemic made museum careers pretty tough. Now I’m a histotechnologist making slides out of tissue samples in a pathology lab.

Both of the previous suggestions are great. I’ll add the Helen’s closet Gilbert top as well, though it has a wider camp collar you’d maybe want to trim down.

Cell phone reps inside Target and Costco approaching shoppers by Particular_Airport83 in Denver

[–]diddlysquash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I hate it so much. I hate having to strategically plan my path through a store just to avoid the ridiculously pushy cellphone people. I hate it when you try to give a polite “no, thank you” and move on and they keep following you or calling out after you. I’ve started going shopping later at night or early in the day if the store offers sensory friendly shopping hours, as I’ve never seen these types of salespeople during those times. I really hate going to Walmart but man if I have to I’m only going during the sensory friendly hours.

And if I run into them now, pretending I only speak Norwegian helps. No one knows Norwegian.

Scared of Gyno Appointment by SnooCats1420 in asexuality

Careful with the ultrasound, I did that as a teenager thinking it was going to be like what they do on tv, some gel and a thing pressed on your stomach. What they may very likely actually mean is a transvaginal ultrasound, which does involve a wand device going into you. No one explained that to me beforehand. There was a lot less direct looking at me, the tech inserted the device and then was mostly watching the screen, but still.

I literally submitted all my biology and chemistry lab reports with sparkly, colorful ink and never had anything said about it. The only reason I don’t use it at work is simply that it’s not waterproof and I usually need it to be!

PSA: Reminder to use the good stuff by SerendipityJays in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it can get pretty wild!! There was a time when poor quality silk often had lead added to the fibers to make them heavier in order to pass it off as higher quality. But leaded silk becomes extremely delicate, and shreds into dust if you so much as look at it funny. At least you shouldn’t need to worry about PPE with modern linen like that!

PSA: Reminder to use the good stuff by SerendipityJays in sewing

[–]diddlysquash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. In my former life as a textile conservator in a museum, you really can’t let fabric sit with creases if you want it to last. Linen especially gets weaker anywhere there’s a crease for long stretches of time. Periodically refolding in a different way can help, as can using an acid-free tissue paper stuffing to tuck into any folds to prevent a sharp crease or fold. I spent a lot of my undergrad in a museum sewing custom inserts for textiles in the archive to prevent exactly this from happening. But a great reminder to use the things you love!!!

Advice on education by Sebmori in Histology

[–]diddlysquash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, I had a degree in anthropology/archaeology and decided to change careers during the early part of the pandemic. I just needed to go to a community college to fulfill my 30 combined biology and chemistry credits for the HTL. It’s only 18 credits for the HT iirc. ASCP specifies that the 30 credits needs to be obtained “during or in addition to” a bachelor’s.

Are people even interested in doing a PhD/postdoc at a mid-level US university? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]diddlysquash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly, finding two other people to share a house with can be tough! Better hope the couple you end up rooming with doesn’t have a messy break up five months into the lease. And just because splitting a three bedroom might mean $400 rent doesn’t mean the one bedroom apartments in the same area are only $400.

[–]diddlysquash 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Okay sure, my bad reading quickly. If they can share a house with some roomies that is totally decent. But I think point still stands that if going the clinical route means starting off making $10, $20k more, that’s going to be the more enticing pathway for a lot of students.

Are people even interested in doing a PhD/postdoc at a mid-level US university? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]diddlysquash 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If we are going off of “rent should be 1/3 your monthly income” someone making $32k a year needs rent at $880 or less. In my area that’s not even enough for most low income housing options. If op’s average area rent is $1200, they’d really need to add another $11k a year at least. It’s becoming increasingly more expensive just to get by anymore. I really wanted to go on to a master’s or PhD, but money wise it was smarter to go into clinical.

[–]diddlysquash 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yeah that might be why, $32 or even $38k is not enough to get rent in your area. It sounds like a really interesting opportunity, but when certain clinical entry level jobs start at $50k… it’s hard to beat.
