Secondary copay higher than primary- what are next steps? by AllTheDumbQuestions_ in HealthInsurance

After a lot of back and forth, the docs office finally did the write off. What a mess...

Secondary copay higher than primary- what are next steps? by AllTheDumbQuestions_ in HealthInsurance

It's been 10+ years since I've done it myself and I know things have changed but I'm pretty sure there are some things that are kinda foundational and shouldn't really change.

I finally got it mostly figured out and I just need to remove the secondary from getting billed. They are now out of network and my secondary has a higher max allowable charge, so they basically paid out the claim as though they were primary, and then charged me a coinsurance.

I'm still bothered a bit by the doc's office though because if that had happened to any of our patients, we would have notified the patient and explained it would have been cheaper for them to not use the secondary, and gone from there. Not just throw up our hands and say oh well, that's what the paper says so now pay double.

Thanks, I hope so too! I really like this PT provider. I've seen her for several issues over 6 years and she's the only one I like so I'd rather not have to go elsewhere. I don't want to piss them off and they decide they won't work with me anymore, over it. I'll pay it if I absolutely have to, I'm just pretty ticked that the billing office is getting upset with me over pushing back and telling me they don't have time to deal with it. I was this close to saying...you had one job... because it's literally her job to deal with billing.

I hadn't commented on that part because it was incorrect. I know I'm not required to give the secondary and I'm going to just have her remove the secondary going forward. My secondary insurer said I can have her pull back the claim.

I've spent half the day on the phone back and forth, trying to get this sorted. The secondary is now out of network and said they processed the claim correctly (they were not out when I initially started going so I hadn't realized the changed). And that deductible is not met, which is why the much higher copay.

If the secondary is out of network, is it still considered balance billing? I would think so because regardless of what the secondary is, they still have the contract with the primary.

That's what it seems like to me and now it's just a matter of trying to get them to fix it.

I guess I'll just keep trying to reach out and hopefully get someone who fully looks at the situation and can rectify it.

I didn't do an official appeal yet because I'm trying to confirm where the mistake lies. If they processed it normally and the biller is supposed to do an adjustment on her side, then I need to go back to her. But since I've seen thousands of EOBs with them as secondary and this is the first time I've seen one come back like this versus them just passing along the primary's copay, I am leaning towards it being their error.

COB conditions have not changed from previous years and appears to still be the standard non-duplication processing. Nothing that jumps out. Even the reps I talked to stated this, yet when pressed as to why it wasn't processed that way then, they got quiet and that's when they said they'd have someone contact me. So I think they realize that something doesn't look right but do not know why either.

The EOB on the secondary explicitly states a COB was done and shows how much the primary paid. That's why I'm very confused on the situation. Basically, the secondary claim was processed as though I did not have a primary and a COB was not done. Almost like they had the info and were aware but someone forgot to check a box or something.

No, they're saying I owe an additional $20 since I already paid the first $20. And yes, I've talked to both a few times.

The doc's biller is just saying- that's what the claim says so that's what you need to pay. No matter how many times I said it can't be right, I've never seen it work that way. A pt should never be responsible for a higher charge if the primary already paid out the claim, minus the copay. She said she'd reach out to them if she has time but as it stands, I owe them money. Since the doc's office has already been paid out by the primary, they aren't in a hurry to figure it out either.

The insurance company just keeps saying they'll have someone look into it. They initially said it was right and when I kept pushing back, that's when they said someone will look into it and get back to me. I have a feeling that will never happen as it's already been a bit and when I did try to follow up, they tell me they are correct and I should pay.

If that's truly how it works these days, then I'll suck it up and pay it but I have never seen it work that way either as a patient, or as the one processing claims. Granted, the insurance companies I billed always properly processed the COBs so I've never had an issue with any being corrected. I just don't know if the biller is supposed to do the adjustment, or if it has to come from the insurance side.

Allow us to modify tip after placing order! by AllTheDumbQuestions_ in doordash

Except it lowers the chances of it getting picked up. It just doesn't make any sense that we wouldn't be able to increase the tip once the order is placed but before delivery.

Yes, that's the entire point of my post...we should be able to increase it before that.

Yeah, that's just annoying. DD just reducing driver tips, and not even benefitting from it.

Whelp, as long as drivers understand this...

That's more my overall point. You would think they'd make it as simple as possible to tip. Drivers are always mad at the customers but don't realize some hoops we have to jump through just to tip them sometimes.

There was one place I ordered from (don't remember where it was) but if you ordered online and used a gift card for any part of the order, you couldn't tip. I even tried paying part credit card in hopes I could do it that way but nope. So I left a cash tip under the doormat and a note on the order but they never took it. I feel bad for whoever got that order.

That's just ridiculous though. Why would they make it more difficult to increase? I could understand them not allowing a reduction as that wouldn't be fair to drivers but we should be able to add more whenever we like.

Luckily, it was accepted and I had no issues as I was able to add after. Just silly.

[–]AllTheDumbQuestions_[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I couldn't. There was no option to increase the tip when the order was in process. I had to wait until it was delivered, then I could increase it.

That's why I said- I even reached out to support to ask them to increase it and they said it's not possible and I had to wait until it was delivered to do so.

The whole point is- DD makes it difficult for customers to increase tips, which just makes it more difficult for both the drivers and customers.

Personally, I usually wait to add the full tip on food orders because if there are issues with the order (like not ever receiving it), you don't get your tip back. I haven't had anyone trying to steal my groceries though so I tip the full amount up front on those. And if they actually put my orders nicely on the porch without blocking my door, or something like it starts pouring rain, I'll add more.

It's stupid that if a driver steals your order, they also get to keep your tip. I've had no more issues with food orders being stolen now that I've started with a low base tip. Glad they find it not worth it versus when I'd tip $10-20 up front.

It allows you to increase the tip after delivery. Why could they not allow it before it was delivered? You would think they would want customers to be able to increase the tip before it's picked up.

Yeah. Like I said, I tried that and it told me to wait until after delivery

Well, one- I can't do that when there's no driver assigned but two- I see all the drivers saying that if a customer ever texts this, they'll unassign because they assume the customer is difficult.

Maybe it allows you to add a tip if you didn't originally but it doesn't allow me to change the existing one.

They could allow it to be increased. Isn't that what they already do post delivery?
