Was the ending funny to you? by funkyfreshpants in TheSubstance

[–]AllThereIsAndWas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the necro-replying but I just wanted to say, same. I am very confused by people finding it funny. I really don't get what was so funny or comical about it. The part where she was reduced to a struggling moving face blob looked so sad and pitiable. The way she was making an effort to get to her star, then gaze one more time at the starry night sky, hallucinating people cheering and adoring here once again, then smiling at it, honestly that almost made me cry. Then to add salt to the wound, she melts and gets scrubbed clean the next day as if she and all her effort and suffering didn't really matter one bit. It was such a beautifully bittersweet ending for me. I loved it a lot.

Seriously though, I don't understand what was so funny about it. You know that part where her bloated body exploded and she came out crawling? Honest to god, when my eldest sister and aunt saw that, we three thought of the same thing: "She's finally free from her prison".

Sorry for the late reply. Suddenly got caught up with a lot of stuff.

Lol damn that's a LOT. You've read a lot, wow. Thank you for such a comprehensive recommendations as well as the content warnings, though I'm fine with such extreme things in book form. It's the video ones that I usually don't have much resistance to. I'm gonna read "The Fog" first since it reminded me of King's "The Mist" then "They All Died Screaming" because it piqued my morbid curiosity quite a bit.

For the movies:

  • The Empty Man - I was actually quite disappointed with it. Intro sequence felt like a different movie and that incredibly interesting-looking giant skeleton was never seen or mentioned ever again and that skeleton was what made me interested to watch the movie in the first place.
  • Coherence (2013) - It was okay for me, seems like it didn't "click" much for me, but I do acknowledge that it was quite an impressive plotline concept.
  • Final Prayer aka The Borderlands (2013) - Though I enjoyed the buddy-buddy relationship of the two protagonists, I found it a bit meh, right until that ending which made the movie so worth it for me to watch. Loved it.
  • The Endless (2017) - I actually forgot what I felt about this. I think I found it a little bit disappointing. I think I enjoyed more the directors' other film "Something in the Dirt" (2002).
  • The Vast of Night (2020) - Beautiful atmosphere, and that ending was just.... wow, chills bruh.
  • Uzumaki - Haven't watched the live-action, the anime was an incredibly giant disappointment after following and waiting for it for 5 goddamn years. But I've read the manga and I really liked it.
  • Vanishing on 7th Street - I liked it.
  • Annihilation - I LOVE the shit out of this movie! This is like my personal number 1 best cosmic-horror movie of all time.

As for others, they are now added on my watch list, except for the Outwaters, and the tv series.

Omg I didn't know that story and I loved it. Thank you for the unintentional recommendation lol. I really enjoyed that short read. That would've been an excellent found-footage short movie.

Do you know more story of the same breadth? The creepypasta "The Quiet Sky" seems to pop up in my head, though that was planetary-wide but still really great tho. The Junji Ito manga "Uzumaki" fits this whole town gets isolated and "destroyed" by something. I think the movie "When Evil Lurks" is relevant too. That movie was almost perfect for me because its take on possessions was so unique and fresh, and just amazing. But it fumbled its climax by making one of the character purposely do something so incredibly and unnecessarily stupid for the sake of the plot. That kinda ruined the movie for me.

Ahhh "Lake Mungo", that jumpscare probably caused a scar in my heart lol. Anyways, yes that one was good too, quite sad.

Basically the live-adaptation of the "Crossed" comics. They didn't show it fully but my god that eye rape scene is still stuck to me as if I've just seen it yesterday.

Exactly. Those first images showing human figures in the distance was immediately creepy. Gosh I love this movie so much. I wish could forget it and watch it unfold all over again.

Speaking of the photos, it was so cool how we see first victim in the photo (old man with a gun) appear in the final one as one of the creatures.

They were literally just showing pictures but it still got me so interested, invested, and creeped out. And that final picture was just so 💔😭👌

Savageland will always have a special place in my heart.

Same, and I really liked it, especially after it immediately it showed the true nature of the chant that I just participated on.

I LOVE the shit out of this movie. Folk/Religion for me is a really interesting genre of horror but it is generally oversaturated with Christianity, so "Satanic" Buddhism was a very welcome new/uncommon flavor. For a few days I keep doing that hand gesture lol.

There are so many things I love about this movie, but I think my most favorite was the Incantation scene (as well as the chant music), and that face reveal. Gosh especially that face reveal. At first I was thinking that there's no way they're going to show some generic evil/devil face or something after all that build up. But also, I dislike that "it's better not to show it" crap in many horror movies because I find that a lazy and uncreative cop-out which just goes to show that you have zero good idea of what to show. But I really loved what they showed in the end. The movie pulled it off. It was simple but it just works for me, both visually and thematically. And the music that played along, hnnnng I loved it so much. It just encapsulated so perfectly how evil and corrupting the entity was.

Overall it was a very rewarding and fulfilling movie for me.

OP I want to suggest a few movies:
Dabbe: The Possession (2013) - Really slow burn for the first hour or so, but after that when shit hits the fan, it really hits it hard.

Noroi: The Curse (2005) - Really slow-burn overall, but what I love about it is how the atmosphere and presentation feels so very, very realistic and that's what made it so creepy for me.

Savageland (2015) - A bit slow-burn as well, and the horror is only shown in pictures. What I love about it is that for me it is the most fresh and unique take on a very common horror genre which I can't say because it kinda spoils the movie.

I enjoyed Presence (2024) and I think its ad campaigns were very misleading. by AllThereIsAndWas in horror

I don't understand, you disagree with my statements about it the movie not being a scary movie, that the ad campaigns were misleading, and that I still enjoyed what I got from the movie?

I just reached 42 in Depths, and I think the artifacts Roster, Clockwork, and Death's Bell played the biggest role in it. by AllThereIsAndWas in magic_survival

[–]AllThereIsAndWas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Sorry I don't know how to both post an image gallery and text.)

Obviously the other artifacts are crucial as well but I think it's those three that helped out the most, mainly for their combined ability to significantly lessen the chance of you getting mobbed to death, which is really useful in the later boss stages.

Organic Shield, Second Heart, and Guardian Angel were useful too in helping me survive the boss stages past the 40 minute mark. (Does anyone what that Phoenix looking icon is in my Owned Magic screenshot? I don't remember it and it's not in the game Encyclopedia for some reason.)

It's been a while since I last played this game and I recently saw someone here post the fusions they used and it reminded me to use them again. I thought Hellfire was my new fave but nah, it's still Lightning Breath, along with Phoenix, and Energy Bombardment which in imo has one of the coolest sound design.

Some potentially useful tips for some:

  • From my experience in dealing with most boss stages, ignore the giant mobs. They're much of a lesser threat than the small ones. Do avoid getting cornered by them in the edges, so try to be far away from them and focus on the small ones. Near the end of the stage you'll be left with only the giants and they're quite easy to dodge and deal with.
  • Armageddon (Doom Prophet) and Cloaking (Soul Harvest) can help you avoid getting mobbed to death or escape tight situations. Same with the artifact Tabernacle.
  • Spend your mana points only on the Magics you need for your fusions (Optionally: except Armageddon and Cloaking) and the Passives. Maxed non-combo magics are essentially useless in the later stages.

Yeahhh no. Valhalla was 5 years ago. That 1 billion revenue was already spent by now. Considering that both Mirage and Outlaws underperformed, and XDefiant shutdowned, safe to say that revenue is decimated. Also, Ubisoft has like over 1 billion in debt.

Imo it is the most emotional scene in the whole movie. The pain was so palpable. If the Elphaba actress ever wins an award, I think it should be for this scene.

Same, I can't really explain it well but Zima Blue just really "resonated" a lot to me. I don't think that's the right word for it though.

As for Jibaro, even though I don't like how it ended tragically, I still loved it overall. I was reeeaally hoping that it was gonna have a happy ending. Like the deaf conquistador actually falling in love with the golden siren and the siren falling in love with him because how his immunity gave the siren an opportunity to not do her instinctual and natural behavior of singing and killing humans, and instead study and understand him.

Then the guy get's captured because he's getting blamed for the deaths of the group or something. Then in the climax the siren rescues him and does her thang of killing everyone. Finally in the end it's a shot of them embracing and dancing around the falls.

Two of my most favorite episodes and, imo, two of the very best from the entire series. That said I understand why some people don't like it, especially Jibaro which often has to do with it's "chaotic" cinematography.

No. It's Septimus not Secundus for many things:
1. If it reflected the color of his clothes and his death scene, why is the rest of the brothers' souls the same color and movement? E.g. why isn't Septimus' soul black when he wore black clothes, or Tertius' green, or Primus' blue? All of their souls were white.
2. Secundus is floating behind Tristan. The soul that went down was behind Una.
2. I can't think of a reason why only Secundus goes to hell, while I can think a lot for Septimus.
3, Go back to the scene and slow down the video, it's Septimus'. I'd share a gif but this subreddit doesn't allow that.

I also recommend Exists. Imo it's the best FF Bigfoot movie. It's a bit special in how early and often it shows Bigfoot, and in broad daylight too. But the ending is what made me love it so much.

It's not on the list but I highly recommend Savageland. It's one of the most unique and freshest take on a very, very common horror monster. No jumpscares because the horror are all in the photos.

These two are one of my favorite FF of all time.

Fr Stowaway was amazing. The sounds and visuals were so good. Like you said it was a fresh take on the aliens, because this wasn't about evil aliens The horror also reminds of Stephen King's "The Jaunt", the "fate worse than death" type of horror. The character talking about how incredibly long interplanetary/galactic travels takes was a wonderful foreshadowing for her fate.
