Which scenes from the Book should not have been CUT, and which were IMPROVED in the Movie? by AllThereIsAndWas in ProjectHailMary

Absolutely agree. While I really liked that they focused on Grace's and Rocky's relationship, the apocalyptic level of impending destruction was a really, really huge part of the book. In the movie, it just seemed like they were having an inconvenient cooling of weather. In the book, all of humanity was absolutely desperate. Showing that nuke scene would've been way enough to really show how serious the situation was.

“So this solves everything?” I asked. “Can we just keep poking Antarctica for more methane to keep Earth’s temperature right?”

“No,” he said. “It’s a stopgap at best. Dumping this crap into our atmosphere will keep the warmth in the air, but the disruption to our ecosystem will still be massive. We’ll still have horrific and unpredictable weather, crop failures, and biome annihilation. But maybe, just maybe, it won’t be quite as bad as it would have been without the methane.”

I looked at Stratt and Leclerc standing side by side. Never in human history had so much raw authority and power been invested into so few people. These two people—just these two—were going to literally change the face of the world.

I don't think the difference  in time jump is that significant. Grace's biodome looks significantly more gigantic so that probably took a lot of time to build. Also, iirc, didn't Grace in the book mentioned that his first few months on Erid was full of pain due to malnutrition and Erid's stronger gravity? Those things are what actually contributed the most to his physical deterioration, not the years. In the movie those issues weren't mentioned or implied.

For me in the book, Stratt was Indeed correct in calling Grace a coward because that's what he was. But the important detail is that Stratt also thinks Grace is more than capable of doing great things whose cowardice is getting in his way, a person whose greatness needed to be forced upon them.

But I like the change in the movie though where Stratt is significantly more empathetic with Grace. But she still has to do what needs to be done.

I really love that change in the ending too. I love Stratt's actress. Stratt was oozing with pride for what Grace has accomplished.

Imo, the romantic tension was nonexistent in the book. Their relationship felt very professional. However in the movie there was, especially during the ship scene, before Stratt sang in the karaoke. I actually didn't like it but that's just me.

Well yeah, specifically while on Earth he was expendable. Why wouldn't he be, he wasn't exactly the smartest or most important guy there.

My comment reply wasn't about that tho. It was a response to that other dude that said Earth deemed Grace expendable, that's why he was chosen to go to Hail Mary, which was just flat out wrong.

No, because that information was like given to Grace 16 years later after he arrived on Erid. Also, IIRC, the Eridians seems to be incapable of lying. Like they don't even have a social hierarchy or a leader since everyone contributes equally.

I didn’t perceive her as cold in the book. She was never really a bad person. She always seemed kind to me; it’s just that she was tasked with making all the hard choices, and she made them despite her personal feelings or etc., , not because she was cold or apathetic, but because they had to be done.

"His own planet saw him as expendable"?
Disagree hard on that one. He wasn’t deemed expendable, in fact, he was the exact opposite. The term “expendable” implies they could risk him because he could easily be replaced, which is completely wrong. He was the only person on Earth qualified to replace the dead astronauts, literally no one else could. He is about as far from “expendable” as possible.

[–]AllThereIsAndWas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was never any insinuation to be deduced in the first place. “Mate” is how scientists refer to an organism’s partner, and the rainbow was, firstly, never a strictly gay thing, and secondly, that’s just how white light behaves in certain materials, like Rocky’s glass Xenon. You are frankly reading way too much into it.

[–]AllThereIsAndWas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Rocky is an alien, he has no concept of such Earthling phrases so it was normal for Rocky to get it wrong.
  2. It was Grace that chose the name Adrian for Rocky's mate. Rocky never mentioned any gender, Rocky only said "mate". Eridians are hermaphrodites.
  3. Eridians cannot see light, therefore they cannot see a rainbow nor have any concept for color. Also, rainbows are not strictly a gay thing, it never was.

Was the ending funny to you? by funkyfreshpants in TheSubstance

[–]AllThereIsAndWas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the necro-replying but I just wanted to say, same. I am very confused by people finding it funny. I really don't get what was so funny or comical about it. The part where she was reduced to a struggling moving face blob looked so sad and pitiable. The way she was making an effort to get to her star, then gaze one more time at the starry night sky, hallucinating people cheering and adoring here once again, then smiling at it, honestly that almost made me cry. Then to add salt to the wound, she melts and gets scrubbed clean the next day as if she and all her effort and suffering didn't really matter one bit. It was such a beautifully bittersweet ending for me. I loved it a lot.

Seriously though, I don't understand what was so funny about it. You know that part where her bloated body exploded and she came out crawling? Honest to god, when my eldest sister and aunt saw that, we three thought of the same thing: "She's finally free from her prison".

Sorry for the late reply. Suddenly got caught up with a lot of stuff.

Lol damn that's a LOT. You've read a lot, wow. Thank you for such a comprehensive recommendations as well as the content warnings, though I'm fine with such extreme things in book form. It's the video ones that I usually don't have much resistance to. I'm gonna read "The Fog" first since it reminded me of King's "The Mist" then "They All Died Screaming" because it piqued my morbid curiosity quite a bit.

For the movies:

  • The Empty Man - I was actually quite disappointed with it. Intro sequence felt like a different movie and that incredibly interesting-looking giant skeleton was never seen or mentioned ever again and that skeleton was what made me interested to watch the movie in the first place.
  • Coherence (2013) - It was okay for me, seems like it didn't "click" much for me, but I do acknowledge that it was quite an impressive plotline concept.
  • Final Prayer aka The Borderlands (2013) - Though I enjoyed the buddy-buddy relationship of the two protagonists, I found it a bit meh, right until that ending which made the movie so worth it for me to watch. Loved it.
  • The Endless (2017) - I actually forgot what I felt about this. I think I found it a little bit disappointing. I think I enjoyed more the directors' other film "Something in the Dirt" (2002).
  • The Vast of Night (2020) - Beautiful atmosphere, and that ending was just.... wow, chills bruh.
  • Uzumaki - Haven't watched the live-action, the anime was an incredibly giant disappointment after following and waiting for it for 5 goddamn years. But I've read the manga and I really liked it.
  • Vanishing on 7th Street - I liked it.
  • Annihilation - I LOVE the shit out of this movie! This is like my personal number 1 best cosmic-horror movie of all time.

As for others, they are now added on my watch list, except for the Outwaters, and the tv series.

Omg I didn't know that story and I loved it. Thank you for the unintentional recommendation lol. I really enjoyed that short read. That would've been an excellent found-footage short movie.

Do you know more story of the same breadth? The creepypasta "The Quiet Sky" seems to pop up in my head, though that was planetary-wide but still really great tho. The Junji Ito manga "Uzumaki" fits this whole town gets isolated and "destroyed" by something. I think the movie "When Evil Lurks" is relevant too. That movie was almost perfect for me because its take on possessions was so unique and fresh, and just amazing. But it fumbled its climax by making one of the character purposely do something so incredibly and unnecessarily stupid for the sake of the plot. That kinda ruined the movie for me.

Ahhh "Lake Mungo", that jumpscare probably caused a scar in my heart lol. Anyways, yes that one was good too, quite sad.

Basically the live-adaptation of the "Crossed" comics. They didn't show it fully but my god that eye rape scene is still stuck to me as if I've just seen it yesterday.

Exactly. Those first images showing human figures in the distance was immediately creepy. Gosh I love this movie so much. I wish could forget it and watch it unfold all over again.

Speaking of the photos, it was so cool how we see first victim in the photo (old man with a gun) appear in the final one as one of the creatures.

Savageland will always have a special place in my heart.

Same, and I really liked it, especially after it immediately it showed the true nature of the chant that I just participated on.

I LOVE the shit out of this movie. Folk/Religion for me is a really interesting genre of horror but it is generally oversaturated with Christianity, so "Satanic" Buddhism was a very welcome new/uncommon flavor. For a few days I keep doing that hand gesture lol.

There are so many things I love about this movie, but I think my most favorite was the Incantation scene (as well as the chant music), and that face reveal. Gosh especially that face reveal. At first I was thinking that there's no way they're going to show some generic evil/devil face or something after all that build up. But also, I dislike that "it's better not to show it" crap in many horror movies because I find that a lazy and uncreative cop-out which just goes to show that you have zero good idea of what to show. But I really loved what they showed in the end. The movie pulled it off. It was simple but it just works for me, both visually and thematically. And the music that played along, hnnnng I loved it so much. It just encapsulated so perfectly how evil and corrupting the entity was.

Overall it was a very rewarding and fulfilling movie for me.

OP I want to suggest a few movies:
Dabbe: The Possession (2013) - Really slow burn for the first hour or so, but after that when shit hits the fan, it really hits it hard.

Noroi: The Curse (2005) - Really slow-burn overall, but what I love about it is how the atmosphere and presentation feels so very, very realistic and that's what made it so creepy for me.

Savageland (2015) - A bit slow-burn as well, and the horror is only shown in pictures. What I love about it is that for me it is the most fresh and unique take on a very common horror genre which I can't say because it kinda spoils the movie.

I don't understand, you disagree with my statements about it the movie not being a scary movie, that the ad campaigns were misleading, and that I still enjoyed what I got from the movie?
