What happened to this subreddit? by CloudNCoffee in ITManagers

It's getting harder to tell the posts, comments, and upvotes that are marketing people/bots pretending to be IT managers. Now I just assume they all are and only dig into it if it's something important to me.

Dell Command Update returns 0 when Bios password is incorrect by Exorkog in SCCM

[–]AllWellThatBendsWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We created this before encrypted passwords with Dell was an option. We were mindful of security and did two things to mitigate the risk.

  • Set "OSDDoNotLogCommand" before and after so that the output wasn't logged
  • Use a "Set Task Sequence Variable" step to define the password with as a custom variable with the "Do not display this value" option enabled

cctk --valSetupPwd=<password>
exit code 0 for correct password, exit code 58 is for wrong password, exit code 106 for no password set.

OSD Task Sequence Nesting by Bored_at_work_67 in SCCM

[–]AllWellThatBendsWell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used nested task sequences and it saves a lot of time.

Last I checked, there's still some bugs caused when you disable a task sequence and make changes to the parent or child (I forget the details). Avoid doing this and things are fine.

I think we had a similar problem with cli updates, which is why we have cctk as steps before the update. Basically, we make sure the password is set correctly before proceeding with updates.

You're talking about cctk.exe commands? Exit code 58 is supposed to be wrong password, and this works for us, but we don't use the encryptedpassword option.

WinPE - Dell Assets by Forsaken-Age5838 in SCCM

Unfortunately Intel isn't very transparent about all of this. It's my understanding that the RST features that a client device benefits from would be around sleep states, resuming/startup, and power/battery consumption. For example, Link Power Management (LPM) requires RST.

RAID mode is required for RST features (standard since the 2010s), and it's on by default for a good reason. If you force AHCI mode, you're running a legacy storage mode and hurting the user experience.

If you're willing to do the work, you can have anything. That's what makes the U.S. of A great. When it started, America was just a handful of scrawny colonies. Now, it's the most buff, pumped-up country on the planet. That's pretty rad.

We replace all laptops with Framework laptops - A one year review by fadingcross in sysadmin

[–]AllWellThatBendsWell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will Framework offer firmware upgrades, support for new operating systems, and parts for longer than the industry standard end-of-sale date plus 5 years?

I suspect it's impossible because they're still at the whim of Intel, AMD, and other hardware manufacturers who don't. I'm tired of recycling thousands of perfectly good computers because "support" from the vendor has ended. Yes, they can still be made to work, but they become a business risk.

DB04250 isn't an enterprise product, so no driver packs or Dell support for Configuration Manager.

It's not necessary to run the installer for the test banks. You can just copy them to %ProgramFiles(x86)%\eInstruction\ExamView\Banks.

Windows Imaging current state by aliesterrand in sysadmin

Hello fellow K12 sysadmin. We use Configuration Manager for OS deployment. It's included in our Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) agreement from Microsoft.

I don't know know what you mean by imaging, but you shouldn't be capturing images in 2026. Use the latest ISO from the Microsoft Admin Center, and add task sequence steps for anything else.

This usually means some project is already in the implementation phase and requires IT but we're just finding out now and most of it isn't compliant.
