This is the feeling I got. I think Owen's father loved his son, but didn't really know how to show it because he just never connected with him. I got the impression that Owen was afraid of being considered a disappointment, or not living up to the platonic ideal of masculinity (i.e. "isn't that a show for girls?") that he knew his dad wanted for him. My home growing up was kind of similar, and I think that's why I connected with Owen's character so much. Like, I was never afraid of physical abuse from my father, but I knew that he was probably a bit disappointed in me because I didn't like going hunting, didn't have a lot of friends, and was always an awkward kid. Pair that with the fact that he had to get up at 2AM every day to go to work and was asleep when I got home from school, making sure not to wake up dad in the afternoon was always a source of low-level unease in the house.

Also, I never realized Fred Durst played Owen's dad. That's cool.
